We're celebrating our beloved 435 Holly in bear chat today. Still heartbroken she didn't return in 2024, but wow, what an incredible life she led. Raised many cubs to adulthood, adopted a yearling and raised him, and won Fat Bear Week. A legend. Love you forever, Holly.

Today's bear is 602. 602 is an adult male around 11 years old, and he gets so fat he looks more like a mountain than a bear. 602 doesn't hold a place in the dominance hierarchy because he only spends time at Brooks River in the fall, and the big boys mostly ignore him.

"I heard a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk calling. Then I saw a small bird fly onto a branch very close. I grabbed my camera and could hardly believe what I saw: the Hawk staring at a male House Finch almost beak-to-beak for around 4 minutes. Nature never ceases to amaze!"
