Great news! www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Here in Rio is scorching hot. Yesterday's temperatures hit 44C and today is coller "only" 41C... I wonder how bad it will be living here in 10-20 years from now. 🥵 www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

While putting the kids to sleep it seems Shakira is testing* the sound in the Stadium for her gig on the 11th. * I can hear her voice but it might be a recording.

If you somehow found my profile, I usually post/complain about: - Statistics (I am Bayesian with a preference for fast methods like INLA) - Epidemiology (Infectious diseases epidemiology, outbreak surveillance, climate-sensitive diseases) - Politics (I consider myself a progressist) - Brazil 🇧🇷

This is quite sad to read. I was born and raised in a poor neighborhood in Belo Horizonte and in most of the families there is someone who illegally migrated to the US. A cousin, a father, a mother who thought they could provide a better life to their family.

We had a small sample of the implications of a Trump-like person on power here in Brazil (data hiding during the pandemic). My guess is that Bolsonaro didn't destroy as much as he could simply because he didn't know what to do... Now his side can copy (and adapt) whatever Trump is doing in the US.

And as COVID, it could easily spread to other countries.

A study in blood donors in Rio. We found blood bags infected with HAV and parvovirus B19. Then we estimated the incidence and risk of transmission by blood transfusion. Full paper here: virologyj.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

¡Un duro golpe a la salud pública global! El presidente Trump firma un decreto para retirar a EE. UU. de la OMS www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

That is a "great" start (not a surprising one though) - Fascist style salute from an important supporter - withdraw US from the WHO - withdraw US from the Paris agreement on Climate

In Brazil, the main printed journals (Folha de São Paulo and O Globo) also avoid naming the fascist style salute.

The formatting says it all.

This year there is a quite nice conference on infectious disease dynamics, but unfortunately it is in the US. Unfortunately because my US visa has expired and I won't apply for a new one. It is a too annoying process that I prefer waiting for the next conference. www.elsevier.com/events/confe...

🧵 WHO informed its Member States and International Health Regulation State Parties of an outbreak of suspected Marburg Virus Disease in the Kagera region of #Tanzania So far, we are aware of 9 suspected cases incl. 8 deaths across 2 districts. 1/2

I am quite worried about this dengue season in Brazil. We just had a massive number of cases in 2024, but the disease is spreading to areas where a large part of the population is still susceptible. So, unfortunately there is plenty of room for new outbreaks.

Since the seminal paper in 2009, I've got hooked by INLA so I use it whenever I can. This year I'll add more MCMC in my classes and maybe in some projects that I left behind because I was too lazy to do it since I couldn't run them in INLA. 😅 Are NIMBLE and Stan the main MCMC packages around?

Some months ago I bought a wireless printer but I couldn't use it wirelessly because I have no windows to install it properly, but it works fine on the cable. Today I was going to upgrade Ubuntu in one laptop and it turns out one of my laptops have windows 🤡

Read the latest Disease Outbreak News: Trends of acute respiratory infection, including human metapneumovirus, in the Northern Hemisphere. bit.ly/41Y8Ox4

Quite an interesting article. Here in Brazil I've quickly looked at the data and it is around 30k snake bites notified per year (it is compulsory to report but I assume several cases must be underreported). The deaths on the other hand seems a small part of it around 140 per year.

It seems I created a tradition without noticing. This is the third end of the year in a row that I spent reading a novel based in Asia: 2022: The Kite runner (Khaled Hosseini) 🇦🇫🇺🇲 2023: The travelling cat chronicles (Hiro Arikawa) 🇯🇵 2024: Pachinko (Min Jin Lee) 🇰🇷🇯🇵

2025 is an interesting year (at least for those who like number curiosities): 2025 = (1 + 2 + ... + 9)² 2025 = (1³ + 2³ + ... + 9³) If you were born in 1979 or 1980, next year your age will be, during some period of 2025, the squared root of the year. Kids version: kids who are 5 in (20)25.

It is quite annoying to get a visa to the US if you are Brazilian. You need to book an interview, arrive very early at the consulate, wait a couple of hours and answer some nonsense questions like (Are you a terrorist? No, I just want to go to a stats conference... This actually happened to me 🤷).
