First attempt at making Welsh cakes! Though I say it myself they are rather good. 😋😋 Happy #StDavidsDay 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Walking in the wood with my partner in crime this morning, we heard Robin, great tit, treecreeper, blackbird, wren and song thrush. Spring is stirring..!

An afternoon in the garden after a busy week. It was lovely to work in the greenhouse, preparing for the new season, then checking my watch at 5 o’clock, as it was still light. At last!

A first trip to the library for grandson Theo today. It was a great success and he came home with several favourites plus a book on his top subject - space!

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I raced to the rescue of this beauty this morning. A goldcrest! No heavier than a feather in my palm and so beautiful. After a quiet time in the conservatory I found him exploring and held him for one last time. I wished him well as he flew away.

Another grey day in prospect it seems. Going to bake some bread and make veg soup this morning, it’s definitely a day for comfort food.

Having a rare day to myself I’ve at last been able to get back to work on my next book. Another chapter completed and 22,000 words under my belt. It’s starting to take shape!

At last an afternoon for pottering in the garden and revelling in the early signs of better days ahead. Blue skies overhead and a robin keeping me company when I was busy with the trowel.

Why should children read? Because reading for pleasure has the biggest impact of any factor on children's life chances. And imagining a better world is the first step to building one. So come what may - please keep reading books with kids, and encouraging them to read. It has never mattered more.

Snowdrops to make me smile on a walk with my grandson this morning. A day when his mummy should have seen the heart surgeon who will be replacing her damaged heart valve, but the appointment was cancelled at the last minute. Frustrating but she’ll see him next week.🤞🤞

Today is Candlemas- which must be the best name in the calendar. Candlemas - a celebration of the return of light Artist: Gerald Witcomb

Authors, if you see this, it’s a sign to post the first line of your book. “It was Bunter, the cat, who started it all.”

Ooh ‘Death in Paradise’ was good! Don Gilet is an excellent new inspector and the #SaveSelwyn campaign starts here!

Stop worrying about bats and newts? No Rachel Reeves MP – start worrying about the future of our economy if we tear down the nature it depends on. Nature isn’t a blocker; it’s the foundation of growth.

We always enjoy doing things together. Theo is helping his Granny make a curried chicken pie!

How it all started… The first books I published were collections of short stories under the banner of The Woodpecker Tree. The little girl who sat in the tree reading her books was my mother. Although I now focus on novels for older children, the woodpecker is still my logo.

Well here I am. I’ve come in search of old friends, fellow writers, nature lovers and people who make me smile.
