HNY! In case you thought 2025 is the year of the snake, it's actually the year of the SQUID 🦑 Excited to present this new protocol paper from the @brangwynnelab.bsky.social on isolating+transfecting squid primary cells 🧫✨! Check it out here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Updating my CV and biosketch for 2025 and replacing all journal names with PMID or DOI. To be consistent with what we at HHMI ask all of our applicants to do @hhmi.bsky.social Focus on the science, not the publication venue

Yes! Love to see it! We’ve got some stuff in the works - my super talented technician is actually flying home right now from training a team to dissect an unconventional animal model not featured on this list for a big project we are working on. Stay tuned!

Blunt advice: If your figures and legends are too small to easily read in your grant proposal, they have a negative impact. If the reviewer can't get the information from the figure easily, there is functionally no information with added irritation.

Join our lab! We're hiring a research technician—a great opportunity for individuals with a Bachelor's degree who want to gain valuable research experience before heading to medical or graduate school. recruiting2.ultipro.com/SCR1003TSRI/...

Today was The Day! #VosshallLab Annual Clean-Up and Holiday Luncheon. We clean the whole lab and collect and put out lots of science stuff not being used. The whole campus comes to take stuff!

Oh what's that? A #Crustmas gift to you all: the cutest porcelain crab convention of all time, taking place in a seed/nut top. 😍🦀😍 #25DaysofCrustmas

My undergrad, Jeyashri Rameshbabu, passed her neuroscience honors defense this week - her committee said it was by far one of the best UG defenses they have ever seen. And she got there with character and kindness. So proud of her!

I applaud this initiative to try to break the fascination with journal name prestige. As long as I remember to do it, I put only the PMID for my papers in the slides for my talks. If @ardemp.bsky.social can do it, so can you!

I love my job @hhmi.bsky.social This week we hosted 164 scientists and heard 30 amazing 15-minute talks, dove into 70 posters, ate many fancy meals, and saw zero journal names.

Can we design allosteric modulators that change a GPCR's preferred G protein? Yes!💥 BAMs at the GPCR-transducer interface change G protein subtype selectivity in predictable ways, enabling rational drug design. The lab's 1st preprint! Check it out! 🧪💊🧠🟦https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.11.20.624209 🧵👇

🎉 Congratulations to Vivek Jayaraman and Gaby Maimon, co-recipients of the 2024 W. Alden Spencer Award from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons for their pioneering contributions in elucidating the neural circuits underlying navigation in fruit flies.

Excellent exposition on scientific publishing from Richard Sever "Biomedical publishing: Past historic, present continuous, future conditional" journals.plos.org/plosbiology/... Early career researchers: It's rare to see but this schematic of the publishing process is super clear.
