Rage, rage, against the dying of the light

“Nice tablecloth, what’s the occasion” “It’s Tuesday, Mrs Zhang always comes in for dumplings on Tuesdays” “But….you’re an auto parts store!” “Yeah, but there was a restaurant here before we moved in. She doesn’t see so well.” “So, what? You send out for dumplings for her? That’s so sweet!” […]

Surely a suitable response to "Hi!" is "Hellow" #DadJoke

Dog places her head on the pillow next to mine in the bed and stares at me with her best "I am innocent of everything." look. Me to her: "You are the most beautiful horrible thing." She has wind that could strip paint.

#ADayInTheLifeOf My wife (walking past my office): "Can I borrow your car?" Me: "Mi casa su casa... or something like that." Wife:... Wife exists house. Wife walks back into house: "My car keys won't start your car." Me:...

Someone: "You need to improve your Social Media strategy, carefully craft your posts for your audience, spread them out so your posting regularly, schedule them for the most opportune times etc." Me: "It's very kind of you to think I have a strategy. Misguided of you to believe I desire a […]

I came across an old CNN article brilliantly titled (though I'm not sure how deliberate it was / if they realised the irony... surely they had to?): "The flat-Earth conspiracy is spreading around the globe."

A guide for Christians to becoming atheist. Step 1: Read the Bible. Some interesting related comments here: [https://atheismnow.quora.com/Atheists-who-said-that-reading-the-Bible-made-them-an-atheist-how-Literally-there-are-millions-of-people-who-read-the]

Mastodon is so... I spot the typo in my post only after someone has favourited or boosted it.

#Math #Maths #Mathematics To sound like a maths teacher just make sure to pronounce "Euler" as "Oiler". To sound like a maths Professor make sure to pronounce "Lie" (as in Lie Groups and Lie Algebras) as "Lee". #LifeHacks

I'm always going off at a tangent... when I drive through a roundabout.

This is just a reminder the Saudi Crown Prince had Jamal Kashoggi killed and dismembered, in case you have forgotten who the U.S. is kneeling to.

Murderbot is on Apple. Wow! First Silo, then Murderbot. Are they just working their way through my library?

Australia has a new Attorney General! It's a great time to call or write AG Michelle Rowland's office and firmly but politely tell her or her staffers to #PardonDavidMcBride! ☎: (02) 9671 4780 📧: [email protected] #Auspol #freeDavidMcBride

SELF-PROPELLING PARTICLES Take a tiny rod with one half made of gold and the other made of platinum. Put it in hydrogen peroxide. It will start to move! The platinum end catalyzes a reaction where hydrogen peroxide turns into water and oxygen, and this […] [Original post on mathstodon.xyz]

I turn on my PC. The local wildlife are immediately sterilised by the excessive output from my four exposed nuclear reactors running at a critically risky heat output. The sound of 10,000 cooling fans deafens the city’s morning traffic as my warehouse of 500 parallel-chained AMD Razer […]

#Math #Maths #Mathematics An interesting integral in my maths class today. It required students to use three trig IDs, AND spot a "wrinkle" just before the end. i.e. find the length of the closed curve given by x = 8cost + cos8t, y = 8sint - sin8t A nice question from the textbook we're using […]

"In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. The reason: The country applies the “Housing First” concept. Those affected by homelessness receive a small apartment and counselling – without any preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected thus make their way back into a stable life […]

Gotta love the United States of Americium!

Free mulch for the win today! But exhausted now.

#Math #Maths $Mathematics [AFAIK] Introducing Quaternions, it's common to emphasise the unit basis "1" i.e. we have {1, i, j, k}. However, introducing complex numbers it seems far less common to talk about them from perspective of their basis {1, i}, emphasising there's a unit basis, as well […]

Ugh, this is brutal.

I'm sure your screen name is fine. But I haven't seen better than: "Full Metal Archaeopteryx" Thank you [@DelilahTech] Do you have a favourite?

FIrst dog: Rushes treat to secret location for consumption. I don't want anyone stealing it! Mine, all mine!... my precious. Second dog: Moving is just wasted calories. I'll plonk down right here and eat it thanks. #DogsFoibles

A drawer for mugs can be a wonderful thing. However, it's far from stress free when your partner collects mugs at a rate that continually outstrips the holding capacity of the drawer. "OK, so you've acquired two new mugs, which two current mugs are you wiling to part with?" And NO... do NOT […]

#AusPol Thinking about the recent Australian election, mandatory voting and preferential polling and, unbidden, my mind started singing Monty Python: "Every vote is sacred. Every vote is great. If a vote is wasted, God gets quite irate."

The movie "Civil War" doesn't depict what triggered the conflict. Just explores the results. I'm curious whether USians think: - Fragile systems (at least to this outsider) seem to be rapidly collapsing. Will they prove stronger than they might seem, and hold? Or... - There's a "line that […]

I'm likely late to the game, but I only just saw this lead-in line marketing the new Marvel movie. "Marvel Studios and a crew of indie veterans who sold out present Thunderbolts*" Advertising that "leans in".

Did you see this? It's an artist's conception of how gravity from the tiny moon Daphnis creates ripples in Saturn's rings - created by Kevin Gill of NASA. This image was pretty popular here, and elsewhere on the web - but people often don't come out and say […] [Original post on mathstodon.xyz]

The new #pope has a degree in #mathematics and wrote a #PhD thesis on "The role of the local prior" which I assume is a novel concept in #Bayesian #statistics. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Leo_XIV

The Vatican requests that visitors to the Holy Sea do not feed the Papal Seal.

Isn't Vatican City landlocked? Why is everyone going on about the Holy Sea?

Just wanted to share this photo from our vacations in the Scottish #highlands We have it as a print on the wall as well. I really want to go there again ... just doing some hillwalking - exploring the rugged landscape, the wind in the face .... yes, that […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

I'm not particularly into swearing etc. and this is clearly a really inappropriate time for this, so look up Tim Minchin's "Pope Song" at your own risk.

I'm sometimes amazed at how none of my kids are particularly into maths/science etc. What did I do wrong? And then I think about my Wife, Mum, Dad, siblings etc. and remember that I'm the "genetic anomaly" being the only one so into maths/science etc.

Hey USAians, calm down the last pope was American, too.

Honestly after 13 LEO popes you'd think they could try for an orbit with better long term stability

#Physics Shortly starting/running the next session in my online course on Special Relativity for teachers. Covering the Michelson-Morley experiment this time and probably getting on to time dilation. Their original paper is worth a read. You can find it here […]

Can't decide what to have for dinner. I'll be sending black smoke up the chimney.

My favorite random local news station in a place I don't live is KTVB in Boise. Yesterday, they reported that the City of Boise made the #pride flag an official city flag so that they aren't prohibited from flying it by the state of Idaho. #LocalMatters #LGBTQ […]

I feel my week is going pretty well. I haven't lost a single fighter jet so far.
