This is true and great phrase-making. Worthy of Voltaire.

Waterstones is having a pre-order promotion this weekend! 25 per cent off some new books including the paperback edition of Borderlines! Offer code PREORDER25 www.waterstones.com/book/borderl...

Absolutely. Fucking. Despicable.

The US are a gang of robbers. Same idea as Russia, somewhat different methods so far.

This makes me sad and angry, on several levels. Read it and I think you’ll know what I mean, even if the broadest conclusions are hard to put into words.

Is there any evidence for this assertion? I would think that - particularly now - change and disruption are frightening to most people; that people want systems they rely on to work, and for a stable foundation from which one can aspire and build.

Pay attention to this. Replacing JAGs with loyalists enables whatever orders Trump and Hegseth issue to be interpreted as lawful.

And you still get some idiots and ghouls who say that the US administration is pro-worker.

Unironically, these letters are a good example of how we’re ruled by evil men now. It would have cost them nothing to be at least slightly sympathetic. “Hey man, we know this is rough, but we have to tighten our belts and…” They instead deliberately made them as cruel as possible.

A story which starts with an unfortunate whale in 1685…

There’s diplomacy, where you phrase stuff carefully when you’re dealing with a dangerous nutter. It sticks in the craw but it’s necessary. And then there’s… this. Whatever this is.

Those London by-elections keep on coming. @lewisbaston.bsky.social keeps on reporting: www.onlondon.co.uk/lewis-baston...

Three London by-elections! My - quite rapid if I do say so myself - write up is here www.onlondon.co.uk/lewis-baston...

I enjoy laughing at Liz Truss as much as anyone but I can’t help feel a sense of foreboding. I think we’re in a bad enough timeline that she might exercise a measure of power again sometime. And she’s radicalised and embittered and even less suitable than she was in September 2022.

There was another London by-election this week - on Tuesday in Alperton ward in Brent. My article on the result - Lib Dem hold - is here www.onlondon.co.uk/lewis-baston...

Three London by-elections last night - three Labour holds but each intriguingly different. The worst vote drop was Lillie ward in (Hammersmith &) Fulham, the smallest was in Whalebone in (Barking &) Dagenham. I’ll be writing them up for @davehillonlondon.bsky.social in the next couple of days.

This would be completely illegal. But you wouldn’t know that from reading this post, the headline, or the lede. Unbelievably bad.

The notion that Trump's "I'm king" tweet is "just trolling" or "a joke" presents an opportunity to recreate my just-joking thread (porting it over from the Bad Place): 1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on the social function of humor (in literature & film) and here's the thing about "just joking."

I’m not in the habit of quoting Ronald Reagan, but that thing he said about ‘outlaw states run by the strangest collection of misfits, Looney Tunes and squalid criminals since the advent of the Third Reich’ comes to mind.

Yikes.

Terrorist organisation.

Terrorist organisation.

Well this is bleak.

An unusual Tuesday local by-election in Brent. Positive for Lib Dems and Tories, less good for Labour and Reform. www.onlondon.co.uk/lewis-baston...

Our friend the African Red Toad is a common toad who lives in a variety of habitats in many countries in southeastern Africa! They are also known as the Split-skin Toad, perhaps signifying the different colors of skin on their back and sides! (photo by Suncana Bradley)
