No doubt this is a matter that Messrs Macron and Starmer will be raising with Mr Trump when they visit Washington in the coming week. Oh...

"... *accused* of promoting diversity". What is America coming to? A mere 4 years ago, the contexts of 'accuse ... diversity' were almost entirely the opposite

Sounds like my lectures

Day out yesterday to a country house we often visit. But it was unexpectedly closed, no mention on the website. I wonder if a murder had taken place and each of the weekend guests had a motive for wanting the victim dead?

The rise and rise of the -washing suffix: denotes actions which presented as contributing to a worthy cause, but which in reality have little effect or a contrary effect

And then we were 89... Any time you want to do something, Labour, any time. 10,300 job losses in 2024; how many more in 2025? qmucu.org/qmul-transfo...

A truly outstanding public service and response to university administrators who cut languages and translation, then call the monolingual rump “Global humanities.” With important regional context, telling the Welsh that the cuts signal “that English is enough.”

I'm really looking forward to giving this talk next week! I've been working on this for a while (some version of this has been in my head for years) and am excited to finally get my ideas out there. You can attend for free in person or online!

Yet another bad news day in the wonderful world of HE. The top-down managerial model has conclusively failed. Time for something else

Extension of the domain of the -quel suffix. But still no sign of 'quel' as a standalone word, meaning the original film, novel, etc of a series

Ever since we were slapped with punitive deductions in January 2022, it’s been our aim to turn our experience of impoverishing intimidation into freedom from employer detriment for everyone. This 🧵 outlines some of the ways you can help protect & improve workers’ rights. qmucu.org/2025/02/10/j...

there’s never a bad time to revisit this all timer from @johnrogers.bsky.social

During Trump #1 , I read 2 novels about a fascist takeover in USA. Philip Roth's "Plot Against America" is the better book, yet (at first) the takeover happens quite slowly. Sinclair Lewis's "It Can't Happen Here" is more 2-dimensional, knockabout stuff, but also more like what's happening now

Corpus and lecicogrammar. This is a really lovely annual event within a friendly and supportive community. Check it out!

This film should be fun to watch. It comes out on the Americans' National Grammar Day, 4 March. www.rebelwithaclause.com @grammartable.bsky.social #EnglishGrammarDay #grammar #EnglishGrammar

Quite by coincidence, Sky Atlantic is screening a drama series about Musko... sorry Mussolini from this evening: www.sky.com/watch/mussol...

There's a really popular DIY store near me. Really, how big is the queue? Same size as the B.

Sunset over the Isle of Wight

If the world's population got together for a coin flipping contest, with the winner staying on until there was only one person left, I guarantee whoever won would immediately launch a social media career coaching people how to flip coins.

Anyone who is now between 18 and 26 years old (and counting), was too young to vote in the 2016 referendum. Perhaps we should have another referendum, just for them? You never know, they might be more in favour of a youth mobility scheme than the older generation. How about it Yvette?

This Paul Noth New Yorker cartoon from four years ago still applies.

Great to see this get attention. My work showed 'illegal' has been the strongest collocate of 'immigrants' in the Times newspaper since the 1970s Prior to that, the words most associated with 'immigrants' were: 60s: Commonwealth 50s: coloured 40s: illegal 30s: Jewish 20s: British 10s: Canada

So sorry to hear about Marianne Faithfull. Last time I saw her perform was at Toulouse's Marathon des Mots literary festival in 2008(?), helping Will Self to read out his updated version of Dorian Gray, with the Fr translation projected on the backdrop. Not typical of Marianne's output, shall we say

‘The phrase “I can’t imagine” feels especially hurtful to hear, because the speaker is actually saying “I could try to imagine what you’re feeling, but I don’t want to.”’ This week’s Substack is about offering sympathy without saying “I can’t imagine” open.substack.com/pub/rachelhe...

"Welcome to the Inauguration Ms Truss. It's great to have your support. You have to admit though, that lettuce thing was pretty funny."

My annual joke (1st time on Bluesky), this year with added AI reference: Do not confuse Davos with Davros. One is at the heart of a sinister conspiracy to enslave humanity to their robotic overlords. The other is a character in Doctor Who

In this discussion, the right-wing panellist asserts that, if the 'flow' of immigrants is 'out of control', the first thing 'common sense' tells you is simply 'turn off the tap'. Oh dear, after 20 years of Corpus-Assisted Discourse Analysis...(from about 24 mins) www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
