Another reminder for those who still seem to have not understood: Chat programs do not “look up” information and then repeat it. They write plausible language in answer to a prompt based on their data set. References will use real people, journals & words from titles, but will not truly exist.

Things are not developing as I would wish. www.cnn.com/2025/02/18/p...

The Trump official currently dismantling USAID was caught in a secret meeting with a group of pro-Russian separatists in the Balkans. Those he met with are under American sanctions for trying to restart the Bosnian war in the name of Christian nationalism. 1/

Deputy leader of the AfD Beatrix von Storch is the granddaughter of Hitler's Minister of Finance Lutz von Krosigk (pictured here on the left w/ Goebbels) and Chancellor of the Third Reich (May 1945). She has previously advocated the shooting of immigrants who do not have visas.

It’s so great to see Saoirse’s post about our public library service get such traction. The consortium system we have here is a game changer. You can order any book from the entire public library shared catalogue (12 million items) to be delivered to your local branch, for free.

So the US is now kidnapping whole families and trafficking them to random countries that the US has coerced into imprisoning them for some unspecified period of time

my take is that your willingness to accept this gulf of america nonsense is an indicator of your willingness to accept much worse things coming from this administrator

“The State is the name by which we call the great human conspiracy against hunger and cold, against loneliness and ignorance; [it is the] warden of the arts, of love, of comradeship, of all that redeems from despair that strange adventure which we call human life.” - Tom Kettle (1910)

From a federal court decision blocking Trump's anti-trans healthcare order: "The Court cannot fathom discrimination more direct than the plain pronouncement of a policy resting on the premise that the group to which the policy is directed does not exist."

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

Breaking - White House is forcing out top leadership at the National Archives. “The exodus of senior staff is seen as a huge loss for the agency, which is considered nonpartisan and dedicated to the preservation of history and documents.” www.cnn.com/2025/02/14/p...

Historically illiterate American reactionary and opportunist in Munich lecturing Europeans about Neo-Nazism. Another reminder that when the far-right refer to ‘free speech’ they mean the toleration and accommodation of extremism.

Encyclopædia Britannica will continue to use ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons: -We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S. -The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous. 🧵⬇️

Here's something that takes seconds and could have actual positive outcomes. There is an official 'citizen's petition' system in the EU. There's one open at the moment to ban conversion therapy for LGBT+ people in the EU. Ireland can be 1 of the 7 nations needed eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#...

A historic graphic of corruption. The 11 federal agencies so far targeted for firings or dismantling by Elon Musk have more than 30 ongoing investigations into his companies. (📸 Malika Khurana for NYT)

Musk has received $13B in government contracts over the last 5 yrs. With all his fuss about the $9B/yr in overhead to the more than 2,500 universities conducting lifesaving research, I am curious when he is going to turn DOGE on his own contracts and ‘efficiencies’. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/11/u...

if you thought archives were problematic, wait till you see no archives

Eric Hobsbawm: "Most young men and women at the century's end grow up in a sort of permanent present..."

The AP should stop covering Trump events. Instead send those White House reporters out into the field to report on the harms and repercussions of his policies. The U.S. public never needed coverage of pseudo-events anyway.

This whole thread - but also, and despite my own deep cynicism, I have still been surprised by all the powerful institutions complying in advance. My uni is striking all mentions of diversity. The last 18mos has shown admins are generally unwilling to stand for academic freedom with their faculty.

Heinrich Heine: “Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen.” (Almansor, 1823) Where they burn books, they will also ultimately burn people.

Thread. A perceptive and accurate assessment of where we are (and where we've been for a while even if lots of folks refused to see it)

Here's what the decision by America's favorite sports league tells us about "anticipatory obedience."

Tesla paid $0 in federal income tax last year. 2022: $0 2021: $0 2020: $0 2019: $0 2018: $0 Tesla reported $6.7 billion in profit in those years.

Shots fired.

Elon got pilled and audience-captured a long time ago. The anons he listens to are setting the agenda of the government. Their weird conspiracy theories are his reality. Their newsletter ramblings are his media. And they mob his enemies. An extremely repetitive process keeps happening…

Tech bros cheering on the cuts to grant funding built businesses and wealth on the back of decades of university R&D work. Much of that knowledge was given away to the public. This is basic pulling-up-the-ladder nonsense via rewriting history. They owe the public, not the other way around.

Come for the news that “bigballs” hung out in cybercrime discords, stay for his old friends dumping on his coding abilities krebsonsecurity.com/2025/02/teen...

We took X to court. And we won! ⚖️ The courts ruled that X must urgently grant us access to their publicly available data via their API. This access is critical for our analysis of online public discourse ahead of the upcoming German elections. Read: bit.ly/4gBWGp4 Here's what's happened 1/3 👇

The depths of the anti-trans hatred in sections of the British media is just shocking to behold. Trans people in the UK are a tiny group of people who must constantly suffer this blazing hot ire directed upon them by self-righteous bigots for no reason at all.

A measles outbreak is growing in a rural area of West Texas where vaccination rates are well below the recommended level.
