Tonight's news from Germany has reminded me of this tale (inspired by the country's 1930 election) by the marvellously relevant and astute @annelouiseavery.bsky.social.

abcnews.go.com/Politics/vid... According to ABC, the NY MTA says: traffic is down by 9%; traffic is decreased by 1.2 million cars; the restaurant business is up by 7%; Broadway is up by 25%; and commercial leases are up by 6%.

When newspapers die, history dies. Fascinating story of how Preservation Chicago rescued Chicago Tribune archives slated to be abandoned when Alden sold off Freedom Center to the casino guys. www.preservationchicago.org/win-preserva...

I was in a book group once that read a book that was called "Rumspringa," I think, which is a year off from Amish constraints, and a year physically away from the family, for young people so that they can experience freedom from those constraints and decide for themselves how they want to live.

This is much more detail than you need, and I suspect it's not comprehensive, but it gives you an idea. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subgrou....

I see that it's a lot of trouble, including the initial outlay; one needs a very substantially built hen enclosure to make chickens safe from dogs, coyotes, and foxes, just for starters. I have decided to go without eggs but I am sad about it. I really like eggs.

The Goose had had enough. She was tired, her foot hurt, she couldn’t stop eating biscuits & something was wrong with her boiler. But she was made of stern stuff & went out to buy some bread & coffee & olives, and then limped around the Heath for an hour in the snow.

Chicago Athletic Association has one helluva floor.

Large enough to wrap yourself and a loved one against the cold—an antique Welsh blanket straight from the world of #OldFox.

Are you signed up for my newsletter? I put out a great one this morning—some Lincolnania, some thoughts on the state flag commission, and my Library of the Month. This photo of Lincoln's horse "Old Bob" did not make the cut so I/m sharing it here. Subscribe thru my website!

I’ve just heard that it’s #RandomActsOfKindnessDay. Have a little hope on me.

This beautiful grotto is tucked away in a forest preserve adjacent to the Kane County govt complex, dating back to its days as a seminary. You might go there and pray that my Geneva Library presentation on Mississippi River roadtripping this Wednesday is a success! (Or just come to my program.)

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years as a result of a deliberate strategy. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

A truck tin-canned its trailer on a railway viaduct today, and the resulting detour led me to this grand old house at 72nd & Union. Early records are sparse, but it likely dates from the late 1880s. The degree to which its original layout, chimneys, and details are intact is very rare in Englewood.

“They cut speed limits, changed street design, removed space for cars… Now it appears that work is paying off. Oslo & Helsinki are reaping the rewards of committed action on making their roads safer, reducing pedestrian fatalities to zero last year.” #VisionZero #SpeedKills #Oslo #Helsinki

www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=225297 I interpret what I read here to mean that the Tower was a way to promote what was, essentially, a beer garden. I found this so interesting; then I found myself thinking: wouldn't it be great to convert the tower to condos?

That looks amazing!

Beautiful!

I will present my Mississippi River Road Trip lecture at the fantastic new Geneva Public Library on Wednesday night! And I will continue to post photos from scenic Geneva until every one of you commits to attending!

Is there a tuberculosis outbreak?

💖💫💫💫💫💫 Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! Sea Otter is such a treasure, and I know you know that I love Ermine.

St Valentine’s Day was believed traditionally to be the day when birds chose their mates. So even if the day has no other special meaning for you, there’s that to hold onto. ❤️
