Don't forget to sign up for the @makevotesmatter.bsky.social activist call with Lib Dem MP Sarah Olney to discuss the next steps in the campaign for fair votes. Sarah Olney has gained cross-party support for her PR Bill, which passed its first reading in December. actionnetwork.org/events/all-a...

“PR is not a magic bullet. It won’t fix everything overnight. But it is a necessary first step towards a system that makes voting worth something again. Because if nothing changes, disillusionment will only deepen. And that is the real threat to democracy.” westcountryvoices.co.uk/young-people...

Labour won the last election on just a third of the vote. Now Nigel Farage believes he can do the same. Right, left or centre - NO ONE with minority support should have 100% of the power. That's why we demand Proportional Representation.

In GE2019, the Tories got 56% of seats on 44% of the votes. In GE2024, Labour got 63% of seats on 34% of the votes. We need to change this system so that seats match votes - voters should get the MPs and policies they vote for. #ChangeTheVotingSystem

"We're really bad at making long-term decisions because we have a broken political system." The Liberal Democrat MP for Woking @willforster.bsky.social spoke to Amelie Abass from Young MVM about the ways in which First Past the Post is failing us. 📹 Watch here: m.youtube.com/watch?v=3A8r...

Unfortunately, the voting system we use in general elections, First Past the Post, means that many votes end up ‘wasted’.

Thanks for your support, @timfarron.bsky.social! Today MVM activists and MPs are taking part in our Valentine's Day action, showing their love for Proportional Representation. It's time to break up with FPTP and swipe right on a fairer system where every vote counts. 💜🤍💚

“This Bill is simple in its aims, to ensure that it is the people of this country – not the deep pockets of foreign billionaires, oligarchs or corporate interests – who decide our country’s future in elections” 💬 @mp4stratford.bsky.social calls for caps on donations in British politics

30 January saw MPs warning that our current Parliament “is the one that least represents how the country voted of any in history”.

The out-of-date two-party system is struggling with our new multi-party reality and is delivering a distorted parliament that least represents how the country voted of any in history.

In GE2019, the Tories got 56% of seats on 44% of the votes. In GE2024, Labour got 63% of seats on 33.7% of the votes. We need to change this system so that seats match votes - voters should get the MPs and policies they vote for. #ChangeTheVotingSystem

The backbench business debate saw MPs from Labour, the Lib Dems, Reform UK and the Greens all back a move to Proportional Representation (PR) for Westminster.

🏛️ Cross-party MPs used last week's debate on Proportional Representation to call for a 'National Commission for Electoral Reform' 🚨 First Past the Post isn't working. The public knows it, the parties know it, and MPs know it 🚀 It's time for action, starting with the launch of a National Commission

49% of Britons support introducing proportional representation, with just 26% backing first past the post PR: 49% FPTP: 26% By party voted for in 2024 Green: 72% PR vs 15% FPTP Reform UK: 67% vs 20% Lib Dem: 61% vs 20% Labour: 53% vs 27% Conservative: 39% vs 42% yougov.co.uk/politics/art...

We’re fighting for a fair and proportional voting system. If you're curious about proportional representation, here’s our simple explainer: https://www.electoral-reform.org.uk/voting-systems/what-are-voting-systems/proportional-representation/

Hugely important point 👇 Turnout at the last general election was among the lowest in our democratic history. Many people feel like their vote makes no difference. Evidence shows that countries with PR have higher turnout. To restore trust in democracy, we must fix our voting system.

🗣️ 🗳️ Last week, MPs from across the House of Commons came together to make the case for fair elections in a debate on PR. We were thrilled to see so many of the MPs that Compass local groups endorsed during our general election campaign, #WinAsOne, contributing to the debate. 🔴 🟡 🟢

It's time for fairer votes. After a historic vote of support for fairer voting in the Commons, the Government should allow the time to take this vital step in improving our democracy.

"Most MPs who spoke backed a change to a more proportional system, where the share of seats would reflect the share of votes" 📻 Great to see the BBC coverage of last week's Commons debate on Proportional Representation, as cross-party pressure builds for a National Commission for Electoral Reform

💥 Support for Proportional Representation is growing. Latest polling shows that 49% of the British public wants to switch to PR - including the majority of Green, Lib Dem, Reform and Labour voters. Just 26% of people would rather keep FPTP. It's time for change. It's time for PR.

In today's debate in Parliament on Proportional Representation, MPs from different parties spoke in support of changing the voting system, including Lib Dem MP Lisa Smart (Vice Chair of the APPG for Fair Elections). We will continue to fight with our allies for better democracy.

"The debate also follows a YouGov poll which recorded support for changing to a proportional voting system at 48%. Conversely, just 24% said they supported maintaining the FPTP system." Great to see coverage of today's debate in @politics-co-uk.bsky.social!

Some people support a "strong man" to rule as an emperor. Our vision is a multi-party democracy where parties work together to resolve the long-term challenges we face collaboratively. This starts with implementing proportional representation.

🗳️ ✊ We must deepen our democracy to take on the far-right. That's the message @pollytoynbee.bsky.social makes in the Guardian today, and which we make in our latest report, 'Thin Ice', cited in Polly's piece. It's time to put "country before party" and take on the democratic deficit.

Fantastic news👇‼️ After the most disproportionate election ever, this parliamentary debate is another crucial step in the fight for fair elections. Write to demand your MP attend the debate on 30th Jan and support fair votes actionnetwork.org/letters/pr-d...

"The best defence against extremism, and against an unrepresentative minority capturing absolute power without majority consent, is a proportional voting system." 💯 Powerful article. In these turbulent times, the case for PR is stronger and more urgent than ever. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

💥 Great news that the House of Commons will debate Proportional Representation for general elections in full ⏱ The Backbench Business Committee Chair announced this is scheduled for 30 January 🏛 First Past the Post is damaging trust in politics. We need a National Commission for Electoral Reform

Excellent article by Polly Toynbee summarising why we should all support the fight for Proportional Representation to defend democracy. Liberal Democrats will continue to work with allies in other democracy organisations and with other parties to achieve a better voting system.

🚨 BREAKING: Next week, on 30th January, MPs will debate Proportional Representation. We’ve got the most pro-PR Parliament in history. Now let's make this the biggest debate on PR ever. Click here to contact your MP and ask them to attend 👉 actionnetwork.org/letters/pr-d...

💥 Last month Parliament voted for Proportional Representation for the 1st time ⌛ But the Bill is unlikely to get parliamentary time to proceed 📢 Yesterday @alexsobel.co.uk, Sarah Olney & @elliechowns.bsky.social made the case for a full debate on PR to take place in the House of Commons Chamber

Politics feeling stuck? Unlock a new part of your political imagination with this fascinating (and dare we say fun!) interactive story from Fix Our House co-founder @leedrutman.bsky.social and Jesse Wegman www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The UK has used FPTP since 1885, when: - Women couldn't vote. - There were just 5.7 mln registered voters. - 12 out of 13 parties in today's Parliament didn't exist. - We didn't have cars, the radio, the NHS, or even tea bags. A lot has changed. Why can’t our voting system?

🤝 Want to restore trust in politics? 🤷 Then address the no.1 reason people are dissatisfied with our general elections 📊 ⅔ of voters want our flawed voting system addressed before the next election 🎯 We need a National Commission for Electoral Reform

⚠ First Past the Post was amongst the main reasons people were dissatisfied with the 2024 general election 🔬 Evidence from @electoralcommission.org.uk Chair to PACAC parliamentary committee's review of #GE2024 🚀 Our view: the government should launch a National Commission for Electoral Reform

Proportional representation is not a voting system in itself. Instead, it’s the idea that seats in parliament should reflect the proportion of votes cast.
