@lichensvc4.bsky.social , any help identifying this lichen here? 🤔 Gotta put lichens up with the mosses and mushrooms. 😉

Tuesday ends with #moss & #lichen perfection @bigbarnacle.bsky.social

Last week, found a big weft of Sausage Beard-lichen (Usnea articulata) on an oak twig blown down from the canopy at Coed-y-wenallt. A new site, and there are just a couple of other Cardiff records of this once-rare species that is spreading rapidly from the west.

These plus a new UV torch! Can't wait to get out there looking! Thanks @anaturalistabroad.bsky.social! 😁

Roccella tuberculata one of several litmus lichens found on the Macaronesian islands, seen here on volcanic rock at Ponta de São Lourenço, Madeira, Portugal

Looks like a rosette lichen (Physcia) maybe? www.inaturalist.org/observations... #lichen #lichensubscribe #inaturalist #fungifriends #nature #macrophotography

Happy #HotStickSaturday to all those who celebrate! 🥳

Little lichen trumpets (Cladonia fimbriata)

A drystone wall built of silicious rock sporting growths of free-growing Trentepohlia aurea algae, the lichen Lepra corallina with its large coralloid isidia, and a small thallus of the lichen Parmelia saxatilis.

I thought I was dealing with Candelariella aurella #lichen (with 8 spored asci) from an old wall. However the intense red K+ reaction puts me off. The spores are 1-celled and little too small for C. aurella. The are not polarilocular so not fitting to Caloplaca/Calogaya. 🤔requires further thought.

We lichen our public lands. Keep them public.

Endocarpon sp. Sorry, close-up photo is out of focus. This is dull lichen that looks like smudge on the rock. After I started looking at lichens, I know a “smudge” can turn out to be something very interesting. Saku-ra-saku Lane, Saku, Nagano #Lichen #FungiFriends 地味なミドリゴケ。長野県佐久市さくラさく小径 #地衣類

I have to contain myself to not go out and look at every tree, curb, surface, to see what #lichen is there to find (addictive!). Can it be that I found myself a red listed rare Ramalina fraxinea (NL Groot takmos) just around the corner hanging from a small tree trunk? #fungifriends #photography

🗳️ Voting is now open for European Tree of the Year! 🌳 Last year, you voted & chose the #SkipinnishOak as the UK Tree of the Year. Now this spectacular Scottish oak is up for the European title (yes just like Eurovision!) 👉 Vote here https://buff.ly/36YYrsu Oh and please share! 🙏

Good to find some more lichen posts.

In the underhangs below the stones of a north facing mortared wall the malachite green thalli of Botryolepraria lesdainii grow with the fern Wall Rue and spiders’ webs. Algal cells group in grape like clusters among septate hyphae with characteristic wide lumina #lichensBLS

This old garden bench is home to our commonest Reindeer lichen Cladonia portentosa, a species of heath and moorland and occasionally fallen trees. Characterised by its bright bluish white reaction to UV light, trichotomous branching and perforate axils it can dominate lichen rich vegetation

#lichensGBI Time for a lichen post after a Christmas/New Year break. This one is a local speciality of the Cairngorms, in Scotland, and is a favourite of mine, Cetraria sepincola. No need to go high to find it, as it is in my village (250m above sea level). And no microscopy needed for ID! 1/2

From today's walk in the woods. Lichen was playing peek-a-boo in the leaves. #pisgahnationalforest #lichen

If you're interested in finding out more about lichens, do look at the British Lichen Society's (BLS) events page for walks, talks and more across the country over the next few months britishlichensociety.org.uk/the-society/...

This one is not for today. I was curious and did a section, immersed perithecia in the apothecium of Lecanora campestris. #Lichenicolousfungus. Up for ID tomorrow. Good night!

Any other lichen lovers out there? I'm always delighted to still see these cool outposts even in subfreezing temps on the shore of Lake Michigan. #naturephotography #naturalist #coolstuff

Below images of Amandinea punctata on a pebble, on bark and on lignin. Thallus typically thin and pale greenish grey or barely visible #BLichens

A Little Black Dot lichen puzzled us during a survey of trees in a London park. Microscopic examination revealed it to be Amandinea punctata but the N enriched state of this site had resulted in a subsquamulose thallus with a thick algal layer unlike the typical thin pale crust. #BLSlichens

Second talk of the afternoon, is a recorded presentation from Buddhika Weerakoon from Peradeniya University, Sri Lanka, speaking about the “effects of ammonia on #lichens in a tropical environment”. #BLSAGM2024

Next up we have Holger Thus from the State Museum of Natural History, Stuttgart - talking about the past, present & future of European freshwater habitats. Titled “Clean, cool & flowing or dirty, dry & plagued by disasters”. #lichens #BLSAGM2024

Our afternoon of lectures have begun, starting off with Chris Ellis from the RBGE, with a presentation on “Understanding climate change at a scale relevant to #lichens - identifying risks and opportunities”. #BLSAGM2025

Our fourth presentation of the day, is by Rolf Gademann & T.G. Allan Green titled, “watching lichens at work - chlorophyll fluorescence in ecophysiology”. #BLSAGM2025 #lichens

The next short talk is by Cassie Laughlin and follows on perfectly from the previous presentation. This talk, titled “inspired by interactive maps” - generating new and important records for Xanthoria parietina. Encouraging everyone to share lichen records with the BLS #BLSAGM2025 #lichens

A morning full of British Lichen Society business at our #BLSAGM2025. Great turn out in person and online as well. Excellent work across the board, with all BLS Officers re-elected for their posts. #lichens

Kickstarting a weekend of #lichens with Silke Werth (LMU Munich) for the Swinscow Lecture, sharing research on genetic diversity & population structure of Lobaria & Sticta species on the Atlantic archipelago. Absolutely fascinating!!! #BLSAGM2025

Final presentation of the AGM is by our former president Neil Sanderson. Neil shares his use of the BLS interactive maps as a professional lichenologist to target lichen recording in his home patch. Finding a new & undescribed Graphis species to science #BLSAGM2025 #lichens
