So our goal with the Liberal Lies project is this: Don't let voters walk into the ballot booth with a head full of lies. Our collector cards aim to educate people with simple facts how Liberals are misinforming them and their friends. (And so often, we can make a set of collector cards!)

Australians take pride in our healthy democracy. In a democracy, the people (ideally) have the power to choose the nation's future each election. But that power is stolen from them if they're misinformed about what the alternatives on the ballot paper represent. #auspol

Why did we start this project? Because integrity in politics is under attack: around the world, and in Australia. We know conservatives here are looking at campaigns like Trump's and Brexit with envy. And those campaigns have one big tactic at their core: JUST TELL LOTS OF LIES TO WIN POWER

Thanks again for your support so far. Look out for new cards in the coming weeks. If there's a big lie that you're hearing a lot, we'd love to hear some suggestions for upcoming cards. And don't forget... Collect them all so you don't elect them all!

We respect people's right to cast a vote for whoever they choose. We just want to ensure that vote is informed by facts.

The reason we focus solely on the Liberal party is that we see them as the biggest danger to Australia's future. Their stances on climate action, integrity in politics, and equity for women and minorities, are some of the worst we could adopt, and deceiving voters is central to their strategy.

We try to make our fact checks non-partisan where we can. However, Labor being in power, lots of lies target them and their record, so exposing that misinformation will tend to come across as a defence of their government.

One last thing we think is worth addressing: Is this a Labor stan account? 🧐 We promise it's not. We're partial to the Shit vs Shit Lite view of Australian politics. What we're all about is just this: Making voters aware of major misinformation in political ranting www.youtube.com/watch?v=bley...

🕵 We've already had some fans report spotting Liberal Lies Collector Cards in the wild. Thank you to those who've been sharing them! Why not download all the cards so you've got them ready whenever you need? We'd love to see some screenshots of Liberal Lies cards being posted or spotted elsewhere.

Other ways you can help put truth in voters' hands are: • Tell people about the cards, or just share what you learned! • Send the cards to friends & family • Post them to online groups & forums • Watch your local MP's socials, and post the cards as replies when they try to spread the lies.

We've just joined Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and X (Yeah, X is bad. But people there need to see this, right?) One way you can help is following and reposting us on these platforms: www.instagram.com/lie_collector/ www.youtube.com/@lie-collector x.com/lie_collecto... www.tiktok.com/@lie_collector

We're so excited that over 1,000 people are already following us here, in just 7 weeks. You're the bomb! But here's the catch: We're not going to change any voters' minds if the only people seeing these cards are the crowd that were posting #NeverDutton #NeverLNP anyway. This is where YOU come in!

This election looks like it'll be about: 1. Cost of living (+ the wider economy) 2. Energy Liberals have little policy around either, but they're banking on swaying votes by lying to people about what's going on, and what their plans are. (With support from the Nationals, AND Murdoch media! 🤯)

The Liberal claim is based off ASIC's insolvency data, so only looking at one type of business closure. Oh, and you know how we said the statistic is "mostly" true? That's because they're generally saying "small businesses", but the number they use is ALL businesses. asic.gov.au/regulatory-r...
comment in response to post
The data for this card came from the ABS's 'Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits'. You can find it here: www.abs.gov.au/statistics/e...

It's true there's more businesses ending up insolvent than ever, but with there being more businesses than ever, that's not really a surprise. Samples often need normalisation before we can start comparing them. Not putting numbers in context is one of the biggest sources of political trickery.
comment in response to post
And, of course, as with almost any statistics over the last 5 years, there are clearly pandemic-related distortions in this measure: a dip in business closures when stimulus first started; a huge spike in both new businesses and closures; a tightening in growth (the gap) as global inflation surged.
comment in response to post
The truth is: 1. The total number of businesses is UP by around 150,000 since Labor took over government from the coalition. 2. The rate of business closures under Labor has been a little above the historical mean... and so has the rate of new businesses starting.
comment in response to post
The statement "27,000 small businesses have shut their doors" is meant to fool us into thinking that an unusually HUGE proportion of businesses have closed, and that we are down by that many businesses. Hearing a big number, with no context, we're coaxed into assuming something is going very wrong.
comment in response to post
We've labelled this card's claim as a "Cherry-Pick" rather than an outright lie. While the quoted statistic is (mostly!) true, it's missing two very important bits of context: - What's the typical rate of closures, for comparison? - Are total business numbers up or down?
comment in response to post
We've seen today's disinformation about a supposedly huge and worrying number of business closures pop up across many Liberal MPs' social feeds this week, so thought we'd try to nip it in the bud. Surely once we've shown why it's misleading, they'll stop saying it! Right?

Quick update to Liberal Lies #1, originally published Jan 1. We only had Sept's inflation figures then. Trimmed mean has dropped again in the December quarter, to now 3.2%. Another big drop looks very likely this quarter. And we're sure you've seen the RBA has cut interest rates in response.
