Why is being a #victim such a potent identity today? Just over a week to go for the hybrid launch of @liliechouliaraki.bsky.social's book 'Wronged' where we'll be joined by #RosalindGill #RadhaSarmaHegde #KarinWahlJorgensen & @myriageorgiou.bsky.social (chair). Thurs 6 March, 6.30-8pm + reception

Excited for my upcoming book launch at LSE in conversation with the brilliant @karinwahlj.bsky.social Rosalind Gill, Goldsmiths, and Radha Hegde, NYU!

“We usually think that victims are powerless and passive: vulnerable individuals or marginalised groups who suffer injustices or trauma. But what does it mean when we hear powerful individuals claiming that they are victims and they do so to gain even more power?” www.lse.ac.uk/research/res...

"What kind of world is a world of proliferating victims where each of two sides competes to establish its suffering as more legitimate than that of the other?" Finally started 'Wronged: The Weaponization of Victimhood' by @liliechouliaraki.bsky.social. Loving it so far.

Hi friends! Now that the inauguration and its theatre of power, privilege and white supremacy is over, @kat-hig.bsky.social and I wrote something on Trump’s victimhood politics in his era of absolute power. @lseblogs.bsky.social and @lsemedia.bsky.social

Emma Hutchison’s work on emotions and international relations defined and informed a generation of scholarship. We have put together a special collection honoring the legacy of Emma's work, including her RIS article and 8 others which have built on it. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Victimhood politics is top of Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s agenda. They are not interested in victims but in power. And victimhood creates “good us” and “bad them”, moral outrage against “them” and support for “our” strongman. That’s the far-right playbook right there👇 @lsemedia.bsky.social

"By encouraging the adoption of GenAI, we are directly undermining the principles we have been trying to instill in our students. On the one hand, we tell them that plagiarism is bad. On the other hand, we give them a plagiarism machine" - Ulises Mejias futureu.education/higher-ed/co...

“Only fourteen of the accused men have pleaded guilty to rape. Most of the rest claim that they, too, were the victims of Dominique Pelicot.” Great piece in LRB on how victimhood is used to centre male perpetrators’ emotions and downplay rape culture www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Fantastic series of blogs throughout the year in @lsepoliticsblog.bsky.social and nice to find @kat-hig.bsky.social and my commentary “Two-tier policing” on the British far Right’s claims to victimhood and violent riots last September in the annual top three 🙏 @lsemedia.bsky.social

It's fascinating to reflect on the death of the health insurance CEO while reading @liliechouliaraki.bsky.social. We see here victimhood as a site of communicative struggle. But, strangely, in this case it has been easy to see who are the victims of syst. violence and who is not.

Wow, I’m humbled! Wronged is indispensable. It opens up new ways of thinking about the centrality and ambivalence of pain in political life, while inviting us to meet the challenge of reclaiming vulnerability for building a more just, less painful world @kat-hig.bsky.social 🙏❤️ @lsemedia.bsky.social

Hi friends, I am new here! I teach Media and Communications at LSE. I write about human suffering in the media, hierarchies of place and life in western news, humanitarian and human rights communication. More recently about the rise of victimhood culture in the far Right and on social media.
