here's the incredible interview that @chrislhayes.bsky.social did tonight with the woman who was just fired as the pardon attorney at DOJ, liz oyer. really, really, really worth watching: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mnqv...

As Martin O'Malley said on processing Social Security claims, “there is no way around people talking to people.” For millions of seniors, phone calls are the easiest way to get help with the benefits they need to survive.

Oh man, his cronies are trying to make fetch happen.

The oil industry buys off Congress. No action on climate. The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns. Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care. The list goes on and on. Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.

"Let me say it slowly... you say he broke the law. The White House says he didn't. Check with the White House on talking points before you come on TV." I explained to GOP Congressman Dan Crenshaw why he's wrong about the detention of Mahmoud Khalil. Full debate: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbDh...

Brad Schimel has a funny way of “putting victims first.” He once told two child survivors of sexual assault that they had used “bad judgment” in allowing themselves to be alone with their attacker.

USAID's acting executive secretary just declared to a judge that it was OK USAID cavalierly destroyed its records because they were either: 1) classified copies of other agency records; or 2) derivatively-classified information the agency no longer needs. She is wrong on both points.

“Somebody has to stay to help clean up the mess that they’re most likely going to make,” a public health advisor on infectious diseases at the CDC said. “If you want to get rid of me, you’re basically going to drag me kicking and screaming out of here.”

Gutting the Department of Education will impact everything from internet access to school buses. Let’s not make it harder to learn.

The most incompetent collection of dipshits to ever enter government service.

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

I’m sick to death of people saying we’re “descending” into fascism. The fascism is ALREADY here. THIS IS WHAT IF FEELS LIKE. And if you’re not feeling it, it’s probably because you’re one of the “good Germans.” @michaelharriot.bsky.social explains

The whole political moment - both for much of the public and for many or most of the senators - is defined by the fact that most people don't grasp what's actually being done inside the government, the faits accompli being made. Senators shld know. But I don't get the sense they fully do.

i find this notion that public spending is illegitimate bizarre as a matter of economics but totally legible as a statement of moral economy. and as per any strict system of morality, the punishment is part of the appeal. they are punishing the american people for believing in the public good.

This is the state of the media today: If you state the simple, obvious truth—that the president of the United States is mentally unstable and engages in mentally unstable behavior injurious to the nation and the world—you have to fear for your job. Pathetic.

Today, I voted no on the Republican continuing resolution that would cede more power to Elon Musk and his assault on hardworking Americans. Republicans are evicting people from their continuing their gleeful sprint to transfer wealth from the middle class to the richest 1%.

One bit of news from the hearing for Mahmoud Khalil at the Southern District of New York: The government hasn’t given him a single privileged phone call with his attorneys since his arrest. Judge Jesse Furman will order that he’ll be given two calls with his lawyers—one today and one tomorrow.

This is lunacy

Lutnick: "The best way to actually merge the economies of Canada and the United States is for Canada to become our 51st state ... Canada is gonna have to work with us to really integrate their economy, and as the president said, they should consider the amazing advantages of being the 51st state."

Democrats are demanding answers about how DOGE is using AI inside the federal government. Members of the House Oversight Committee today sent dozens of requests to federal agencies about their use of AI software—and how Elon Musk could benefit. www.wired.com/story/elon-m...

Trump and Republicans are trying to gut Medicaid in secret—because they know the truth is unpopular. Millions of families, kids, and seniors rely on it for care, but they’re pushing cruel cuts to fund tax breaks for billionaires. Read my latest in @newsweek.com: www.newsweek.com/trumps-state...

During today's brief hearing, Judge Furman made remarks and rulings that may shape Mahmoud Khalil's case over his arrest and detention. * Filings will be unsealed, with parties' consent. * Khalil can have two privileged calls with counsel. * Judge is skeptical of govt's jurisdiction args.

The government claims Mahmoud Khalil was already in NJ on his way to Louisiana by the time his habeas petition was filed—an argument that the NY federal court lacks jurisdiction. But Khalil's lawyer checked the ICE locator when she filed and even 4 hrs after, and he was listed as still being in NY.

Moving a detainee around to evade judicial review is classic authoritarian behavior.

I mean, is this not already happening? The president and his Cabinet are stripping departments for parts and refusing to spend money appropriated by Congress. And, they are promising more of it if this CR gets approved!

Trump campaigned on delivering economic relief to working Americans, but his plan to kill the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau opens the door to unchecked financial abuse.

Trump's bizarre new tirade over Elon Musk, Tesla, and the "radical left" actually shows weakness. Trump now sees that his political fortunes are tightly tied to Musk's DOGE disasters, and he sees Tesla's tanking stock as a very bad omen. New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/1926...

The thing I find extraordinary about the bizarre dynamics Greg describes here is that politicians watching them seem to think that politics as normal is the appropriate response.

This is a big part of why I keep repeating that there are NO ALLEGATIONS of antisemitism, harassment of students, or other bad acts floating around about Mahmoud Khalil. Nothing from the Trump admin, nothing in the pro-Trump press, nothing in anti-protest social media. Nothing anywhere.

One of the disturbing reactions to the Mahmoud Khalil arrest is people making things up that he did to justify it that even the Trump admin doesn't claim he did. People just see him as the *type* of person who did the things they're mad about, so punishing him for it is acceptable. Lynching logic.

Senate Democrats are in a tough spot, but with a government shutdown looming, they only have one option ... Shut It Down! open.substack.com/pub/truthand...

📌BREAKING: Bill Gates is the latest despicable billionaire to surrender to Traitor Trump. We are on our own, people.

Per @pattymurray.bsky.social: “I will not vote to weaken my power to fight for WA state. I will not vote to turn YOUR taxpayer dollars into Trump & Elon's personal slush funds. I will vote NO. We should pass my short term CR, avoid a shutdown, and do our jobs.”

“We are horrified by the illegal abduction and now indefinite detention of Mahmoud Khalil—a U.S. legal permanent resident—by Department of Homeland Security agents. We unequivocally demand his immediate release from DHS custody.” — 14 House Dems in letter to DHS EVERY House member should say this!

Musk blamed hackers in Ukraine for X's platform snafus on Monday. But, of course, it was due to security mismanagement at X and "servers that were insufficiently protected from malicious traffic." www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

VERY IMPORTANT: This is just a trick. It's a way for Democratic senator to say they oppose the bill while letting it pass. It's not much of a trick. I mean, everyone will see it. But still this is simply a way of hoodwinking constituents. If they want to vote for it just vote for it.

Sen. @markwarner.bsky.social: It is not possible to leave a message with your office, so please consider this post by an Arlington constituent as my request you *oppose* the CR. Pres. Trump already has effectively shut down the government, the only question is the terms under which it will reopen.

JPMORGAN slashes $TSLA Q1 delivery estimates “to just ~355K, which is -8% y/y .. and -28% q/q from 495K in 4Q24 .. “.. We struggle to think of anything analogous in the history of the automotive industry, in which a brand has lost so much value so quickly ..” Cuts target price to $120 (prior $135

ICE Acting Director Tom Homan comments on arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, saying "free speech has limitations"

“As the Office of Personnel Management oversaw the layoffs of thousands of federal workers and pressed others to justify their positions, the agency’s chief spokesperson repeatedly used her office for a side hustle: aspiring Instagram fashion influencer.” www.cnn.com/2025/03/11/p...

(Reuters) - There is about a 40% chance of a U.S. recession this year and a risk of lasting damage to the country's standing as an investment destination if the administration undermines trust in U.S. governance, according to J.P. Morgan's chief economist. @usatoday.com 🇺🇸

"The drastic action is a departure from the way Congress has handled D.C.'s budget for two decades... "The situation appears to have no modern precedent, and House leadership has provided little explanation for why it is happening..." www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

Insanity as a strategy? Can even the braindead investor class accept that?

If you "avoid a shutdown" and thereby allow the government to be put on life support, what are you winning? Nothing.

If we can "avoid a government shutdown" by voting for this CR, then why is the entire Department of Education closed today? Why is USAID closed? Why are hundreds of billions in grant contracts frozen? We are already in the shutdown. And your votes DON'T stop it. In fact, they allow it to expand.

Former Republican Tennessee state Senator Brian Kelsey says Donald Trump pardoned him two weeks into his 21-month prison sentence for an illegal campaign finance scheme that he pleaded guilty to in 2022. MaKE gRiftErS GrEAt AgAin. 🙄

Have the DOGE boys gotten around to cancelling a) a single weapons contract or b) a single Elon Musk contract?
