New guide to game studies coming out in Japan on 6/26, with essays, keywords, and a recommended reading bibliography. With lots of main players in the Japan game studies scene represented here, I’m looking forward to flipping through it this summer.

Open access! For game studies, great to see a translation of Yoshida Hiroshi’s work on interfaces and screens here.

If you liked or hated my takes on ‘deprofessionalisation’, I went into a lot more detail in this great chat with @pushtotalk.gg for his newsletter. Connected what’s going on now to what I observed in the Australian industry in the 2010s www.pushtotalk.gg/p/gamings-gr...

Yesterday, I uploaded the ISO image of one of the rarest videogames known to exist, of which a single copy is known to exist in the online world. After years of appeals, its owner finally agreed to share it with me so that I could in turn share it with the world.

really excited to share this fun interview with the dude who designed THE Pokemon logo! www.ign.com/articles/mee...

I have been really appreciating the sprite work in Minish Cap lately - what a treat to find out that it shared artists with SFII!

Yale CEAS has posted on YouTube the full recording of Verbal Arts of Japan II, our "yose" event this March featuring rakugo, kodan, and animal mimicry with English subs! The performers were San'yutei Hakucho, Kanda Yoko, Ryutei Komichi, and Edoya Nekohachi. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Mj3...

So many groundbreaking scholars are only in the field because of these grants. We are going to lose a generation's worth of knowledge that we will never get back: www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

Oh no! The 3DS audio guide for the Louvre is getting discontinued in September!

Hello everyone! It's been a while. :) We would like to thank Time Extension for their recent article highlighting the current financial state of the GPS. We would like to expand on it somewhat and respond to some of the comments left by readers. www.timeextension.com/features/we-...

I'm going through user-made tilesets for an old DOS mahjong solitaire game and I found what's possibly the most evil one

PSA for #history #educators using video games and board games in history classes. I've been writing and presenting nationally and internationally on this for 20 years this May. Please consider checking out my free webpage of 15 years gamingthepast.net so that you do not have to re-invent the wheel.

I miss seeing these around so much! The nest strategy is so precarious that all the trees on campus that they would nest in had to be marked with yellow tape, though…😅

I consider Keogh's work to be essential when thinking about video games as a medium. And it grows more important each year, as the reality of video games as a medium and the artificial image the AAA industry side projects keeps growing more and more apart - the price hikes will only deepen the rift

I'm co-editing a Special Issue for Critical Studies in Media Communication on "Games & Storage" 📦 Guided by Zoe Sofia’s articulation of “container technologies” and how systems of storage are never neutral! Let's unlid Game Studies! Full CFP in 🧵👇Abstracts due April 22! Full drafts by June!

You can read the introduction of my book here (in Japanese)! じんぶん堂にて、拙著の「まえがき」が紹介されています。どのような本なのか気になる方は参考にしていただけると幸いです。 book.asahi.com/jinbun/artic...

After reporting the news, games media must now grapple with what the call to boycott Xbox means for us. I wrote about why we must and how we can orient games writing towards liberation. Games nor words alone will save us, but we can as individuals express solidarity and possibility in all we do.

Pleased to announce that my report for the @leidenasiacentre.nl, on Japanese LGBTQ+ politics, has been published! In this publication, I cover some of the latest developments concerning key policy issues, such as Japan's lack of marriage equality, and analyse factors influencing policymaking.

I’ll be helping out with running the performance subtitles tomorrow. Please come if you are in the area - it will be a fantastic performance!

First Person Scholar, the middle-state publication supported and published by the GI, is taking an indefinite hiatus due to a lack of resources. This includes funding cuts to the GI, but also a lack of game studies graduate students with enough funding to allow them time to work on FPS. #uwaterloo

A trailer has been revealed for the upcoming film 『ブルーボーイ事件』, which is based on the case that rendered SRS legally and medically taboo in Japan from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. The film is directed by Kashou Iizuka and its leading actress is Miyu Nakagawa, both of whom are trans themselves.

"when we say experimental art we tend to mean whatever makes no money. and so just by existing this work performs a useful purpose, by demonstrating the gap between what’s materially possible and what’s economically possible." myfriendpokey.tumblr.com/post/7781185...

Saw Char's Counterattack (逆襲のシャア, 1988) in theaters today. Phenomenal to see the painted backgrounds on a large screen and appreciate the soundtrack and sfx with better speakers. The ending tune, Beyond the Time, is one of my favorite songs ever, and the subtitles did a good job with the lyrics.

I’m reading Ursula Le Guin’s “Steering the Craft” (highly recommended to all writers) and damned if this quote isn’t as salient as ever

Just released in our DAS|LAB video series: Sonia Fizek's "Videogames as Folkworlds" talk on "Materiality of Digitality: The Politics and Ethics of Making Videogames", addressing questions and dilemmas of green game design and production. @uniregensburg.bsky.social www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB5e...

Really enjoying this talk so far! It's just getting going if anyone's interested in tuning in.

All Famitsu issues have a strongly worded prohibition against scanning in them, even for personal use. Copyright law also functions differently in Japan and fair use is not as flexible/permissive as in the States so the sharing environment for these is a bit chillier.

So the recent unveiling of the VGHF Digital Archive has also made it easier to track the development (and possibly origins!) of the urban legend about the "Dragon Quest Law." I dunno if there's been any other research done on this, but here's what I've found so far.

Dana is digging into our complete run of The Logical Gamer, a gaming newsletter from *1982!* We believe this is the first time the entire run of Logical Gamer has been available online. It's a goldmine for people studying the pre-crash US game industry! archive.gamehistory.org/folder/982b8...

I can finally introduce to the world the first article on expatriate indie game developers in Japan It is rough around the edges, but the data is important for understanding the makeup of the indie scene in Japan and the motivations of video game expats all over the world brill.com/view/journal...
