Here’s a look at areas of public health and science that been affected by cuts and proposed changes to HHS in the past 100 days.

something I hate about AI is how it's ruined nonsense probability! when I'm scared of demon home invasion I do things that statistically feel like the next step in a boring night as opposed to a brutal murder—unfortunately freaks write policy & do therapy according to that logic so now we're in hell

For anyone aware of the tragedy at Vancouver Lapu Lapu festival, here's a thread of GoFundMe's available to help support the many victims. (copy pasted from my friend 'J' in the Vancouver Filipino community) 🧵

my therapist is going on a long vacation next month, editors answer my emails so I can self-regulate through the relief and satisfaction of tab-closing <3

this "experiment" notwithstanding, "what does it mean if AI can do X better than we can?" is STILL an irrelevant question—the best AI can philosophize EXACTLY as well as we can bc it's a machine that spits out the probable average of the human philosophy in its dataset. www.wired.com/story/an-acc...

NEW—In late Feb, Chris Rufo published leaked chats between queer/trans employees at US intel agencies. Then Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said she’d fire all involved. I spoke to chat members who were fired, are on admin leave, and who kept their jobs about the new lavender scare:

New from 404 Media: researchers secretly ran massive, unauthorized AI-powered persuasion experiment on Reddit users. Researchers planted bots posing as a sexual assault survivor, a Black man, etc into a popular debate subreddit. We spoke to the mods, said unethical www.404media.co/researchers-...

the key to covering Musk well is through context: instead of zooming in on what he is doing you have to put what he is doing into the context of how those things are normally done, and why

I do genuinely wonder how many people think what happened with Wikipedia is that “society accepted it” rather than that they put a ton of work into making it reliable, something that is not going to make AI reliable because no technology to actually understand meaning has been or can be invented.

People genuinely do not understand this and we just have to keep telling them. Over and over and over!

NEW: ICE is now restoring thousands of student visa records. Trump admin had revoked them in recent weeks, saying students had criminal records. Many were never charged with anything. Some had minor traffic violations or were even *victims* of abuse. Reversal comes as Trump kept losing in court.

this is high art also the artist is apparently @truewagner on twitter

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ The Pentagon will resume gender-affirming care for transgender service members, according to a memo obtained by POLITICO, an embarrassing setback to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s efforts to restrict their participation. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

Perhaps Linda McMahon has had too many concussions from her time with WWE. But that’s not how taxes or student debt works. People paying—or not paying—their student loans doesn’t have implications for the federal budget.

lol but also, a reminder of something i feel falls through the cracks of recent conversation about AI: everything it has comes from us! if it's smart or dumb or racist or horny it's bc we are, & have written about it! if you think AI's takes are fun, wait till you meet the people it got them from.

We tried to warn you… Clearview AI’s founders *always* intended to target immigrants and the political left And now “their digital dragnet is in the hands of the Trump administration” www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

“is my calculator horny?“ our tech columnist asks. “i entered 5318008 into it and turned it upside down. what i saw surprised me”

We have to keep all these people's stories visible. Kilmar is important but he's just one of many.

I wrote for @msnbc.com about the HHS cuts dismantling the Administration for Community Living, which works to help disabled and aging people keep living with dignity in their homes and communities rather than in institutions—and about my mom, whose experience highlights the human cost.

Girl, I don't have human rights NOW

Scoop: Democrats have introduced an official inquiry into the decision to closure of the Administration for Community Living, which helps disabled and aging adults remain independent. New from me at @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

he's a good boy

You guys don’t need to try to convince me that any form of AI has merit. It doesn’t. It is boring and half-assed. I am fine getting by with human brain power. If the world nears its end and AI has one hater left, good news! I am still alive.

Misinformation spreads fast online when impulsive sharers (like bots or reactive users) sit in central positions in a network. But if more cautious, discerning users are in those spots, they can slow or even stop the spread—acting like social firewalls. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Wow—15 international students at the University of Central Florida have had their visas revoked as a result of the school's signed partnership with ICE. One was detained. Literally handed over to immigration cops by their own university. Despicable.

I'd say more precisely that we have people going all in on the idea that self-discipline is about having what it takes to dunk your head in a bowl of ice water every morning rather than having what it takes to treat someone different from you like a human being.

“We take up the Vaccine Integrity Project as a precautionary step,” its leaders said. Read more from @helenbranswell.bsky.social at @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2025/04/24/v...

This is why "AI can't do X well anyway!" is a waste of time as an argument. If corporations want it to be good at writing or animation or being a doctor for poor people (bc rich people will always be able to get a human doctor), they'll make it good enough–at least for investors & C-suite goons.

Well, my main thought is that it is too mid to be destroying labor and the earth for.

"Never saw a caveman get hit by a car, did you?" RFK Jr. asked, as he took a break from gnawing the leg of his coffee table. "That's because they didn't eat food dyes." In the corner of the room stood a man only known as Doctor Cowabunga. Together they would decide the future of medical research

Another note about paywalls in less abstract terms: We pay freelancers $.50/word, usually for an article of around 2000 words, at @theflytrapmedia.com. That's $1000! It takes 80 of our 'Base Baddies' at the $25/year tier to pay the writer!

It’s not just biased—generative AI is importing old stereotypes into new languages and cultures. My latest for @wired.com: www.wired.com/story/ai-bia...

Hi everyone, I am writing something about the connection between trans women and dad rock, and I would love to hear from any trans women who can speak to that! Could be super lowkey over email or DMs. If this isn't you, please reskeet!!

just had a dishwasher flood my kitchen for the fourth time. it's very obviously an issue with the plumbing and not the dishwasher itself, which I know because this is the fourth dishwasher that's done the same thing.

It's so funny that Jordan Belfort is a crypto guy now, he asked himself "who would still trust someone with their money after they made a three-hour movie about him being a scammer" and landed, correctly, on "crypto bros"

Israeli forces have now dropped more explosives in Gaza than fell on London, Dresden, and Hamburg during the Second World War. The region’s hospitals have not been spared; most are no longer functional. Clayton Dalton writes about the devastation.

NEW from @nytimes.com: A bone-chilling account. A Venezuelan man detained alongside the 238 sent to El Salvador on March 15 seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. His name isn't among the names of those sent to CECOT that day and no one spotted him among those men. He's just... gone.

Good job team America www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
