Spiritual Director and pastor on scenic Whidbey Island, Washington. I appreciate humor and humanity offered with wry kindness. Life is too short for hate and greed… and for imitation cheese and AI.

Reflection 2/21/25 sound. On a cold winter day the primary sound in the air was not waves on shore, but a fighter jet. In our community there are signs of jets “The Sound of Freedom.” I prefer the sound of waves and birds. What is evoked in your soul by the sounds around you? What disturbs or calms?

Amen

Reflection 2/20/25 focus. The phone required a couple of shots to focus on the seagull, an automatic device out of my control. So much of what we see around us is out of our control. How do you intentionally focus on what feeds your soul? How do you recognize something out of focus and your control?

Reflection 2/18/25 hunting. As the tide draws out the seagulls arrive for their catch of the day, hunting for sea life washed ashore and clams lingering too close to the surface. This hunt results in a feast. What in life are you hunting for that will nourish you body and soul? Do you hunt eagerly?

Reflection 2/16/25 waiting. The tug waits for a ship yet unseen on the horizon to take into port. It has a job to do which requires waiting for others. When do you feel called to wait on others to accomplish goals? How does the wait feel? Does waiting feel like a spiritual practice, waiting for God?

Reflection 2/13/25 bloom where you are. My 2 year old poinsettia lost most leaves as temps dropped and light faded, yet then brought out blooms. It was lush green before. How do you bloom where you are?Can you bloom in unpleasant conditions? What must you drop in order to bloom your gifts of Spirit?

Reflection 2/11/25 glow. The full moon glows through the branches of a tree frozen, lifeless in mid-winter. Light of life can glow even in the midst of the harshest conditions. Who do you glow with? How does the sacred bring light to you? How do you share that light with those who can use the glow?

Reflection 2/9/25 eroding. As the hillside & cliffs erode into the sea we know it has taken time. Homes have fallen off cliffs & the staircase/bulkhead hasn’t stopped this new fissure. What eroding have you experienced that was years in the making? How do you discern/act for hopeful, sacred future?

A good read….thanks BBC

Reflection 2/8/25 is story. The Ferry House was used in the movie “Snow Falling on Cedars,” a story of racism, internal conflict & war’s effect on a community. The story of each character is its own morality play. How does your story guide your morals? How do you hear other’s stories for insight?

Amen!

Reflection 2/7/25 Covered. The snow covers the garden, herbs like thyme remain crisp and fresh under the covering, other veg has died out under the cold, frozen snow. Can you remain fresh when you feel overwhelmed or covered by coldness? Do you find hope that what appears dead, may return in Spring?

Reflection 2/5/25 is surrender. A tree falls to the ground and surrenders itself to nature’s power: to rot, to feed new life, and to ultimately become new ground, earth beneath our feet. Power often demands surrender; how do you surrender to God’s power of Love? What actions do you take or give up?

Reflection 2/4/25 is Cliff. Drastic changes can feel like going over a cliff, from green trees crashing to the rocks below. For those who are not crashing the view can seem awesome. But we are all God’s beloved, how do you help those who are falling? How do you find the hope to lift you?

Reflection 2/3/25 searching. My dog Wesley searches through the snow for the path of the deer in our yard, no matter the weather he uses his eyes, ears, but mostly nose to find the path. What senses do you utilize when searching your spiritual path? How do you navigate through various conditions?

Reflection 2/2/25 Ride the storm. As winds blow in a stormy front the beach is empty, but the sea is occupied with wind surfers. Their perspective is the storm is great, they have the resources and gear to ride it out. Do you have the gear to ride out a storm? How do you support those who don’t?

Reflection 2/1/25 convergence. We are expecting snow; where cold air meets moisture and changes everything. Cold becomes frigid, rain becomes snow. Where in your lives has there been convergence/change? How do you celebrate good change in convergence? How do you hold prophetic witness as needed?

Reflection 1/29/25 see through. We see through the pampas grass the sea, dock and Mt. Rainier; so much beauty. Often we need to see through the weeds as they say, in order to see beauty. What are the weeds that obstruct the beauty in your life? How do you look for the sacred with intent & purpose?

bsky.app/profile/henr.... Time to Pray….

Popular coffee shop named 'cultural center' in Whidbey Island Beaver Tales is as much a museum as it is a coffee shop, filled with Native artwork, photos and artifacts. One of my favorite places in Coupeville!!

Reflection 1/28/25 mercy. Mercy takes a long look, it understands that actions today effect tomorrow. A hungry child is too distracted to learn, the absence of childcare produces neglect or struggle. Mercy wants the best for all. How do you show mercy? Where do you see mercy blessing others, self?

Reflection 1/27/25 over all. Not overall, but over all the sun shines on a beautiful winter day. As a world is so divided it’s hard to imagine a God over all not aching. We seem to lack the capacity to grasp creation is ALL of one source. Where do you find hope overall in a higher power over all?

Reflection 1/26/25 out of place. Like a heron on the highway we sometimes feel out of place. This heron actually caught dinner while I waited for the light to change. When have you felt out of place? How did you feed your soul? How did you make home there or return to more familiar surroundings?

Reflection 1/25/25 is hard. The stones are hard to walk on at our local beach, hard as in difficult as well as hardness of the stones. Life is hard often to navigate as stone walking as steps give way, dreams dashed. What makes your journey hard, in need of grace? Where do you find hard barriers?

Reflection 1/23/25 is direction. When a ferry is on its route it has pretty much one direction each way-a clear destination. There may be tides, obstacles, or wind, but if they can’t get to their goal, they don’t go. Where do you feel directed by the Spirit? How do you hold focus in rough waters?
