Women in research need the credit & recognition they deserve for the amazing contributions they make. Nature Awards for Inspiring Women in Science are open for applications - take a look 👇🏻 & help spread the word #WomeninSTEM #AcademicSky 🧪 @natureportfolio.nature.com www.nature.com/immersive/in...

You know it's a good day when Beaker has your back. Amazing energy today at the #StandupforScience2025 @standupforscience.bsky.social rally in DC. Thank you all and let's get to work! 🧪📣

It's so devastating and heartbreaking to attend local school events where family after family is in crisis over the changes at govnt agencies, as well as nonprofits & others who are funded through the govnt... leaving one or both parent jobless or job insecure. Brainstorming how I might help. 😔

This year's ScienceWriters meeting is now seeking a new home. So many ripple effects from the current federal funding situation. Can you help us find a new venue, sponsors, partners? Details here: casw.org/news/joint-s...

It's also a great opportunity for a university of institution -- if they host! -- to show off their science and technology to a large and diverse group of science writers. I have attended these meetings as much as I can since 2012 and always find value there! @sciencewriters.org

"Behind every great woman in science, there’s another great woman in science" www.nature.com/articles/d41... Prof. @hortenselef.bsky.social, Prof. Sierin Lim, lovely to see you both in this feature. Keep inspiring! #WomenInSTEM 🧪

Just talked with CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp) about my NSF EDU-funded study on early stereotypes in STEM. With my @airinforms.bsky.social colleagues, the results show the importance of *sustained* and *evidence-based* funded efforts to expand opportunities for girls in tech at early ages.

Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs. It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

So nauseated and run down by the news right now -- so many upsetting stories and posts -- so need a cleanse. Posting silly doggo photos. Join me please. A small act to help dilute the sludge.

Join me in a talk and Q&A about #WomeninScience, hosted by the New York State Library. It's next week on Thurs., March 6th. Register here: nyslibrary.libcal.com/event/13887889 🧪 👩‍🔬

In 1952, British chemist Rosalind Franklin bombarded crystallized DNA with x-rays and recorded how the rays diffracted through the sample. The result was Photo 51, one of the most astonishing and iconic images in science.

“US President Donald Trump is taking a wrecking ball to science and to international institutions. The global research community must take a stand against these attacks.” Strong and welcome stance from @Nature www.nature.com/artic... 1/2

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

The Trump administration's efforts to slash research funding have US graduate students, postdocs and other early-career scientists fearing for their careers. Some might leave the country -- or abandon research altogether. https://go.nature.com/43ao2zq

So this is how AI gets us... Suddenly longing for the good old Terminator days. At least then, it was pretty far out of our hands!

"You never hear people talk about the ozone layer anymore." Yup that's because we banded together, listened to scientists, passed regulations, and fixed it. Why does no one know this?

At the President's Council of Cornell Women and a broader alumni event in Philly, meeting the new Provost Kavita Bala, a computer scientist... Love hearing about her early inspiration in science via Sagan/Cosmos, a grant that led to NSF funding for her research, and her thoughts on #AI #WomeninSTEM

Science (and science policy, and conservation) friends, I need your help! We are collecting *specific, clear* examples of harms caused by the Trump administration's attacks on science, to be included in an open letter. Can be links to news stories/social media posts. 🧪🦑🌎 #SciComm #SciPol

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Out of town & watching live news, something I rarely do. Headlines include: Measles outbreak in multiple states, fired park service botanist sharing her story, FEMA funding to be stripped...Struggling to reconcile the dystopian-y news with the alumni networking event I'm about to go to. #scicomm

This is VERY good blog from @robinince.bsky.social, motivated by a questionable (in my view) comment by Tim Minchin...and it takes me back to something a senior, white man made at EGU during a debate about renaming an award after a women; "But who will young, white, male scientists look up to...?" 🥴

At STAT, we're following ways universities are being pressured to disavow and dismantle DEI activities in order to receive federal funding. I'd like to hear what's happening at your university or nonprofit. Can be confidential. Signal: usha.22 www.statnews.com/2025/01/30/t...

Inside the lobby at NSF…

Felt good to help a scientific society assert its principles - to support US researchers, continue to work toward equity & inclusion, and to defend global science - in these trying times, while also laying out resources for its members. Would love to do more like that! Pls reach out if I can help 🧪

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

A proposal: Academic researchers and folks in similar positions, consider writing an op-Ed, or at least a letter to the editor, in your local paper about what these horrific decisions will do to jobs and services *in your local community*. I train scientists to write op-Ed’s and I can help.

I’m giving a talk in Cambridge on 10th March for international women’s day. One day international women’s day might not be needed, but right now we live in worrying times for women and girls. ‘Courage calls for courage everywhere’ www.training.cam.ac.uk/event/5678185

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist. And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation. A 🧵:

"...how can the same sensory information evoke such wildly different interpretations across people, or even within the same person across time?" Learn how @esfinn.bsky.social, a #CNS2025 Young Investigator Award co-recipient, is working to answer that in a new Q&A: #scicomm

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

"That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives." —Carl Sagan Voyager 1 captured the "Pale Blue Dot" image #OTD in 1990. 🧪 🔭 🌍 Image: NASA/JPL-Caltech

“It feels like a betrayal by NASA....It’s inefficient, it’s wasteful, and it’s also just messed up.” This is how scientists inside and outside the agency are feelings about the cuts to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Words by me: 🧪

Happy Valentine’s Day to all the bog lovers out there. This heart shaped bog is in the beautiful Northwest Territories, Canada. Often unappreciated, bogs will win your love with their beauty, mystery, and strength. They clean our water, produce food and biodiversity, and store carbon. Let’s ♥️ them

Missing Canada already! Just got home from my time in Vancouver, which was capped by an amazing discussion at Science World. Was excited to see families with children in the audience -- and to see such eager participation in "Draw a Scientist." We need to build community for everyone in science! 🧪 👩‍🔬

Sharing with the #SciArt Feed:

Enjoying my time here in Vancouver, including an amazing discussion after a talk about #WomeninScience Now at the University of British Columbia yesterday... Tonight, I am giving a talk at Science World, the local science museum and cannot wait! Meanwhile, been taking in the sights! #WomeninSTEM

The attack on initiatives to increase equity, diversity, belonging, and inclusion is an attack on science. Full stop. As discussed in my book #WomeninScience Now, social scientists have studied bias and discrimination for decades, giving us evidence-based tools, which are now being eliminated. 🧪 👩‍🔬

Google doc apparently has inbuilt AI now. Seeing an unfamiliar vertical line, I hovered over it. It suggested that I make some corrections to the blurb I was writing. The first one was to change "Dr. Devezer" to "He". Thank you, AGI.
