Today, we also have a law in Germany that obliges all civil servants (most professors in Germany have this status) to commit themselves to the free democratic order as defined in the Basic Law and to stand up for its preservation (BeamtStG §33 (1)).

What a loss for USAID. Development economists like Dean are committed to rigorously evaluating and increasing the efficiency of programs. This is not about efficiency but "DOGE figuring out how to dismantle an agency, and they're using USAID as the guinea pig to figure that out." Great interview.

It's a very sad day. Just notified that @iza.org is closing its doors as of 31 December 2025. At a time when labor is under attack and technological change moves at an ever-faster pace, I can't help but think that this is a short-sighted decision. My heart goes out to those folks who work there.
