This to me (UK, cradle Catholic, queer) is part of why the US influence in how Catholicism has been talked about & has moved, is so weird. The faith of my childhood and formative years was very "okay, you're confirmed as This, now Act as This, the action is the key". 'This' was grace and kindness.

People are like "is the Pope left wing or right wing?" and I hate to break it to you but you cannot place a Pope's politics onto a simple line like that. In fact, the kind of space onto which you can plot the politics of a Pope requires a degree in Quantum Physics to even begin to understand.

My mother's advice was: nail clippers (just think how uncomfortable and dangerous it would be if you couldn't clip your toenails), Sudocrem (a lot goes a very long way and it cures basically everything) and a tub of salt (you need salt! especially if you are sweating a lot!).

Sensibly I knew that the first vote was going to have a black smoke result, but there is something in me which yearns when they do this for a weird never to be repeated immediately over and done with vote. Just for the lols. (Though if that ever happens we'll get the most batshit pope ever.)

I love that it is seemingly a rule that John Noble has to turn up in 80% of network television to star as A Creepy Dude in one episode and then disappear slowly into the night.

I don't 'refuse to use' AI, I just don't use AI; in the same way that I don't shoplift, or plagiarise other people's books - it requires no effort of will, it's just not something I would think of doing

FOUR WEEKS LEFT on the crowdfunder (nearly halfway there)! And a new reward - for a donation of £60 or over the brilliant @rrowanolive will send you this matching handmade hat and scarf set, hand-dyed and hand-woven www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/help-a-gra...

Very obvious (to me, and possibly you), but: being a boy isn't *intrinsically* bad - there is no male "essence" that is harmful. There are millions of different ways to be a boy or a man. This is in great part why we must fight the gender essentialism of transphobes and rethink gender.

Re. last RT, I really (well, not that much tbh) want to see how it works w/ cultural differences in language & punctuation use. Can it tell the difference between a UK British "oh fuck offff" (generally fond, maybe mildly exasperated) and "oh, fuck offff" (generally annoyed, maybe very exasperated)?

hahahahaha fuck off

One of the small joys of having cats hanging around is watching them relocate for no apparent reason. Rex and I are hanging out in the yard (I'm continuing to delight in the catty gossipy Pozzi book) and he has, in the past half an hour, snoozed in eight different locations.

I know it must be more complex to organise than I am aware of, but it does amuse me that in our increasingly interconnected world it sometimes feels like you're knocking on a friend's front door asking if they're back from their grandmother's yet, except it's hoping a tv show gets a UK release.

As many people have noticed – but let me point it for those who are having problems – all recipes on nigella.com come with a toggle to change metric to US measures and ingredients. PS Tinned tomatoes, anchovies, olives, capers and spaghetti are not, I believe – even in America – difficult to find

Continuing the Meera Sodha trend for Cook Something From All The Damn Cookbooks: spinach, tomato and chickpea curry.

Re. last repost, I'm a cradle Catholic and half the reason I stick around is the ~mood~ and the ~aesthetic~. Because that's half the whole thing, you are supposed to feel overawed and humbled in the face of God. It is supposed to move you.

this is bang on and also wild to me because like! y'all can build beautiful new buildings! they ain't even have to be religious! if you have a lot of money you can just build a gothic cathedral for vibes instead of stripping human rights away from an entire minority group!

Out of office is on, I am in the bath with a beer and a book. Fortnight off, wahoo! (I mean I *was* supposed to be spending it in the US seeing friends [sobbb] but I'll take leisurely local ventures.)

You know, I think it's what he would have wanted.

for a certain kind of person (me) the player stats-n-bios on offer here are just irresistible

Hot cross buns, from the ever reliable Olivia Potts recipe (minus mixed peel because I hate it).

A) I've got trans friends, B) I've got trans people in my life, C) I grew up with the ethos that you care for, and protect, the marginalised.

Instagram keeps giving me bra adverts which is ~fine~ except for ages they were for gorgeous bras I was hesitant to buy because I couldn't try them on and now they are for minimising bras and I cannot express how little the algorithm understands me on this front.

Beautiful tulips to brighten your day.

sharing a bathroom with trans people is a complete non-issue to me but I object strongly to sharing bathrooms with TERFs

A fringe group of bigoted weirdos have dragged British media, government, and law into their hateful obsession with trans people. Grim, depressing, and dangerous. Everyone with power in the UK who's played along should be ashamed of themselves.

As is traditional for the end of Lent, currently in the Catholic debating weeds about when it ends. Friend of a friend's dad is Team Good Friday because that's the entrance to Jerusalem, other friend is Post-Mass on Holy Thursday, and I'm Team "we never made it to mass before Sunday" Easter Sunday.

I ain’t even know how ChatGPT *works* is it a website? A hardware device? an app? who knows! not me!

I adore opening my @vittles.bsky.social emails. Today's held this gem: If somebody’s birthday fell during Lent, for example, perhaps it would be better for them to give up chocolate so as not to miss out on birthday cake. Catholicism is full of such workarounds, the little deals we make with God’.
