Honored that my Management Today podcast episode was their 6th most popular of 2024! What a wonderful discussion on risk-taking, healthy team culture, & why we shouldn't fear #failure 🎙️ It's in great company alongside episodes from @bobsutton.net and others www.managementtoday.co.uk/management-t...

THEY'RE GOING TO ISSUE PERMANENT VISA BANS TO TRANS VISITORS TO THE US. This isn't just for athletes. The directive as stated applies to all visa applications made by trans folks and declare it material fraud to use a different gender marker on applications. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Hi pals! Check out my latest podcast appearance with the imitable @patrickcmiller.bsky.social! Critical Conversations: IR, Forensics, and Regulation in OT

One way to look at tests is as a filter that lets (most) good changes through & keeps (most) bad changes out. Tests make (most) mistakes reversible. Layer these filters & you get better discrimination at the cost of longer delays & more maintenance.

Robert Smalls (1839-1915), once enslaved, became a Civil War hero and politician. He seized the CSS Planter, freeing himself and others, and delivered it to the Union. Smalls later served in the South Carolina legislature and U.S. Congress, championing civil rights and education. #BlackHistory

You know, for the white women who were asking Black women to lead the fight because yall don’t know how to do it, maybe yall should look at how Jane Fonda uses her platform and privilege. There are ppl who look like you, who are also activists, that you can learn from lol

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth ! Feb 24: Q: Why does it seem like everything has to be woke now? Even our scientists?! It never used to be that way! Why does it seem like these days even higher ed has to think about race, when it didn't before? A: It was always like this. Read the entire linked thread

This. Falling for disinformation isn't necessarily due to a lack of critical thinking, and definitely isn't a sign of low intelligence. It deliberately feeds into primal instincts, which everyone has. Comprehensive research skills and the ability to counteract biases isn't something widely taught.

Oh shit.

Not only can you not overwhelm algorithms, you can't overwhelm disinformation itself. It's asymmetric by nature. Disinformation is designed to appeal to people's desire to understand everything, and increased willingness to accept information which fits their worldview over that which does not. 1/2

Mary Ellen Pleasant (1814–1904), a wealthy abolitionist, possibly 1st black self-made millionaire, used her role as a servant to infiltrate elite circles, gather intelligence, and build networks. She secretly funded abolitionist causes and supported the Underground Railroad. #BlackHistory

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth ! Feb 23: Q: Not everything is racism! E.g. Black folk die young because of high BMI from their bad diets! That's on y'all! Right? A: Black people in the UK have higher BMI than white people, and live *longer* than white people. 🙂🙃 Read the whole linked thread.

Someone on Mastodon just reminded me they have probably started erasing Admiral Hopper from US history too, and that specific thing is really messing me up.

Anti-DEI is an attack on civil rights by segregationists. Most white "allies" are completely silent while segregationists attack Black people and our civil rights. These silent "allies" without a shred of shame or self-awareness, fully expect Black voters to make sacrifices to save them at midterms

I don't even want to think about the cybersecurity and national security implications of having every federal government employee be required to send an email detailing their work to a single entity. That seems like a good way to purge anyone with good security hygiene and/or operation security.

It's the evening before elections in Germany where right wing parties are expected to get lots of votes - and one of the free TV stations is showing an adaptation of "the wave" by Morton Rhue. It's probably not going to have an effect but it's a nice signal nonetheless

At the second company in a row where they rolled out a new HRIS that displays legal names by default. Once again, I’ve had to alert HR to their actual and potential deadnaming of trans employees. It is well past time for HRIS companies to build in better protections against this.

Reminder for my mutuals: misgendering is violence and never okay. No, not even if it is done to "people who deserve it". If your willingness to use the correct pronouns or name for someone depends on if you like them then you're not a safe person to be around. Same if you tolerate when others do it.

Firing America's senior military leadership overnight and replacing them with party loyalists is definitely dictatorship stuff, if anyone is under a rock right now.

People often try to sell me on the idea of "Infinite Game" theory. When I don't buy into it, they assume it's because I don't understand it. I understand it just fine. My problem with infinite game theory is it assumes that our relationship to other humans should be fundamentally adversarial.

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth ! Feb 22: Q: Relax! Racism is a boomer problem! As old people die off, the younger generation takes over! Young people are less racist! Right? A: No. People do not become more "conservative" as they get older. That's a lie. Read the whole linked thread.

It’s one of the reasons I like to focus on leadership as a verb, rather than a noun. “Demonstrating leadership” can be done by everyone regardless of their title, role or position. Not always easy, but doable

My point here was not that "building orgs is easy." 🤔 My point was that putting all the emphasis on hiring brilliant individuals, and relying on individual acts of heroism to get shit done, lets leaders off the hook for the real hard work of *leadership*.

I just wrote a piece called "In Praise of 'Normal' Engineers". (partly paywalled) When people talk about world-class engineering orgs, they usually have in mind orgs that are top-heavy with the most experienced and pedigured talent. This gets it exactly backwards. refactoring.fm/p/in-praise-...

[Blog] Remembering job interviews visible-quality.blogspot.com/2025/02/reme... Post about my top 8 memories from what I did for interviews for #tester positions. I've got coverage of experiences.

Elbert Frank Cox (1895-1969) was the first Black man in the world to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. His research in differential equations and celestial mechanics made significant contributions to the field. He chaired the Howard U Math Dept from 1957 to 1965. #BlackHistory #STEM

We all see the world through our own, unique, lens. That lens is shaped by the environment we grew up and live in, our experiences, education, cultural history, and so much else. Including, importantly, our jobs. Déformation professionnelle. psychsafety.com/deformation-...

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth ! Feb 21: Q: Enough about racism for a second. Take a break! I'm worried about gender issues in the US too. For example, why is the gender pay gap in the US so large? It's one of the worst in the OECD! A: You already know that it's racism. Read the entire linked thread.

For my XP peeps: do you usually prioritize… (1) Collective ownership and incremental shared learning over the absolute quality of today’s code or (2) The other way around or (3) Both, somehow ?

What AppSec tools are a must have in your stack? SAST? SCA? Linter? Name as many as you feel are 'must have'. #AppSecThursday #TalkAppSecToMe

Shout out to everyone smart enough to figure out that they lied about the price of eggs and pretty much everything else But aren't smart enough to figure out that they lied about DEI, what it is, and how it works. The fact that many of y'all still believe them on DEI, says more about you than them

Robert Seldon Duncanson (1821-1872), a pioneering African American landscape painter, was the first Black artist to achieve international recognition. His work, often featuring scenes of the American West, merged European techniques with his unique vision. #BlackHistory

Just want to give a shout out to this glorious little integration test which saved my arse from unwittingly breaking a bunch of stuff. Well done, you legend, you’re the best!

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth ! Feb 20: Q: Why were Black folk so happy when OJ was acquitted? To be honest, it feels disgusting. Why does it seem like you're happy he got away with murder? A: Racism. It was never about OJ. At all. Read the whole linked thread. All of it.

History is written by the winners. More importantly, the winners tend to actively destroy other histories.

Just a reminder that fascists, authoritarians, dictators of all stripes destroy archives— books, museums, databases, &c— because those things provide windows onto a plurality of other ways we might organize the world. And so preserving, defending, and spreading that knowledge harms those regimes.

Twitter is a great example of Tragedy of the Common. While I don't think anyone could have predicted Elon Musk becoming supreme leader because of it, most people saw that he was turning it into a propaganda machine and chose to keep posting. Even now, half the big accounts here are still active.

Hey, we're 2/3rds of the way through Black History Month, and if you've been reading my posts, you've already been infected with the woke mind virus! There is no cure! 😮 Because the "woke mind virus" is nothing more than having the same set of facts as most Black folk.

This is very cool! And yes, saying "Not everyone can afford to leave the country!" is a valid initial reaction. After that initial reaction, please consider sharing a link to mutual aid requests for folk that you have personally verified, but do this *on your own timeline*.

Marc Hannah (1956- ), a Black Electrical Eng, co-founded Silicon Graphics, a pioneering company in 3D computer graphics. He's known for developing 3D chips and creating graphics programs like Personal IRIS, Indigo, Indigo2, and Indy, revolutionizing visual effects in film and design. #BlackHistory
