I've had to crowdfund to get to Cali to teach at Irvine- I've had to work a whole month without pay. I have motel housing until May 1st, which is when I get paid- so asking one more time for support for gas and food-- but my students are worth it đź’ś Venmo Nikki-Wallschlaeger

I dunno, man, the "you guys are being too mean to the plagiarism machines that stole all your work and were created to try to replace you so rich people don't pay you a tiny fraction of their wealth for it" posters popping up are pretty funny

The term "Luddite" as a pejorative synonym for "technophobe" was a technocrat PR coup; that's not what Luddites were about. They were a labour movement fighting to give workers control over technologies which were advancing w/o oversight and rapidly automating them out of their jobs. Sound familiar?

For those of you who are celebrating Independent Bookstore Day today (and those of you who truly despise the transphobic scat-muncher that is Joanne K. Rowling), here's an article I wrote for @pajiba.com last year about sci-fi and fantasy books by Black authors that deserve your attention.

It's official. Resistance Summer School is happening. Columbia cancelled my class on Race, Media and International Affairs, but I'm going to teach it anyway. 100+ people have enrolled in just six hours. karenattiah.substack.com/p/enrollment...

I miss the DEI planes, which held themselves together

A large protest has started to grow at the federal courthouse in Milwaukee Wisconsin in response to the arrest of a judge in chambers by regime forces.

Reminding myself that for academics/researchers this next while has to about doing what work we can, as we can, but also getting right with laying the groundwork and securing the research for things to be done on the other side of all this, & then doing other work to make sure there *is* an "after."

I have got to figure out my new strategy for staying on top of email. Put on a beloved TV show or movie for background noise and settle in? Get one of those clown punching bags and promise myself one good hit for every email answered within 2-3 days?

ICYMI: Georgetown Law students made a 853-row spreadsheet of Trump-caving firms. It drew national headlines. Recruiters noticed some talent looked elsewhere. Firms lobbied to change their designation. An organizer tells @www.AllRiseNews.com the background www.allrisenews.com/p/skadden-st...

One of the happiest updates I’ve written since I started following this story. 12 students back in status and maybe more to come. Across the country, students are saying their SEVIS is back. www.dailycal.org/news/campus/...

FYI: I am hearing that it would be a very good idea to log into research.gov and download copies of things like award letters if you have active NSF grants. I also recommend grabbing PDFs/screenshots of public abstracts for NSF awards in case that database goes away.

Reading about the Enlightenment is so violent. The things they did to discover why Black people have black skin...There are days when I can only read a portion of a chapter because I can feel that violence in my body.

Sinners (2025)

ICYMI, for 48 hours we’re trying to save Spark Space from closing🚨 This isn’t a business—it’s a lifeline for workers to connect to their remote jobs so they can feed their families. The team is paying out of pocket for operations ‼️ Let’s do it: chuffed.org/project/spar...

couldn't decide what game i wanted to play so drawing was the move (both from tutorials; see following posts)

This is the take.

Sorry I was late, I was repeatedly clicking on images of fire hydrants so that my digital cash service would unlock $10 I was trying to send to a family that is starving because my government used my tax dollars to fund a genocide against them. How's your morning going?

New data reveals just how many African workers are indirectly employed in the tech sector, doing outsourced jobs like content moderation, customer service, and data annotation for AI models restofworld.org/2025/big-tec...

Steven Universe saving my sanity once again.

At least three people who are obsessed with criticizing me are being published in this book and I just want to point out that I travel and write regularly making the case for science funding and why cosmology is imporrant and these guys have had fuck all to say about science funding

oh hey welcome to your trial, blackshirts

"This checklist has been compiled by grad workers for grad workers to provide support for non-citizens who are being targeted by the Trump Administration. This document draws on resources built by organizations that have been defending their communities and our rights—these are listed at the end."

So, I hear ya’ll like #Sinners. might I also humbly suggest…

I need to raise $40,000 to provide stipends for 20 young people ages 16-24 over the summer so they can participate in an independent study program. If anyone would either want to sponsor a young person ($2000 each) or wants to donate funds in another amount, let me know. Thanks.

What even is a university for, and will leadership at the University of Minnesota fight for it? My latest from @startribune.com. (Gift)

My sister informed me that yesterday it was Ezra Klein warning that "the crisis is here" and today it's the Pod Bros. Now that these white men are saying it, I guess it must be true.

Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, and Rep. Ayanna Pressley demand the State Department release an internal memo showing they had no evidence Rumeysa Ozturk "engaged in antisemitic activities or made public statements supporting a terrorist organization." + Any other docs related to her arrest.

the ACM CHI conference has fully embraced AI snake-oil this year. this is the world-leading conference on human-computer interaction. absolutely unacceptable. if the conference won't remove these and distance itself from pseudoscience, the HCI community loses all credibility

My regalia for graduation arrived yesterday and I am uncharacteristically geeked about it.

The current spelling 'marijuana' appears to have been an English invention.

"Our passenger planes are slower than they used to be. Our trains crawl compared to those in other parts of the world. Our cars do not fly." Flying cars. That's when we'll know we've won. Got it.

*this is not sarcasm but a sincere plea* One way to emphasize it is to link to the actual story a) So people can read it beyond the headline and become better informed b) Pageviews are important as a measurable indication <to newsroom bosses> of reader interest in this kind of reporting!

The MLA is joining with a couple other humanities associations to mount a legal challenge to the attack on the NEH. If you'd like to help with the expenses of suing the government, you can do so here:

Such a great book that I (on the recommendation of my advisor) teach in my speculative design course.
