Doing some talks for K-12 teachers in the next few days. They deserve thanks and support for real, true history more than EVER now.

I’m researching and typing reading notes about unions this morning. This project reminds me that I am still very curious about the origins of union and government in the early United States. I think we’ve done a disservice to limit origins only to England.

If this goes into effect, it will crush higher ed in the U.S.: mass layoffs, slashed services, and even higher tuitions. When coupled with the government firings, it will cause a sharp recession just as the Republicans slash nutritional and medical support for the poor. And that’s the point.

Just dropped off Orbit for his neuter and puppy teeth extractions. On the one hand, I’m sad because it means a scary day and pain for him. On the other hand, I won’t miss his new behavior of marking inside. To prove the point, he marked inside the vet’s office as I dropped him off.

G'day educator friends! I have a bizarre curriculum question for you. When & how do students in your school learn about crime and the law? Are they ever taught (age-appropriately of course) about harassment, sexual or physical abuse, neglect, theft, or other crimes that affect them? #sschat

It’s time to introduce a cute animal photo into our feeds. Here is a coatis I saw in Mexico. They are like raccoons.

Not a lawyer so I won’t speak to the legal implications. But I am a historian of the press, and this flagrantly violates historical traditions and conceptions of a “free press” that holds government accountable.

One of the most important things that Hilary does in this book is move us away from thinking of Black Civil War memory as "counter-memory" to the Lost Cause/Reconciliation narrative. In doing so, we can more clearly see the richness of how African Americans remembered and commemorated the war. 🗃️

As wealthy universities dither, it's a good time to remember the staff members (not presidents) who took radical action for justice. Joshua Bowen Smith (1813-1879) was an abolitionist, politician, food service worker at Harvard, and member of Boston’s Vigilance Committee. @mhs1791.bsky.social

New #BFWorld Episode: African Americans in Early New York City. Join historian Leslie M. Harris for a look at how Africans & African Americans helped #NYC confront slavery, freedom, & racism in the early republic & Antebellum periods. #History #Skystorians #USHistory #BlackHistoryMonth

Reading about the New England Confederation on the sun porch with Clio. Last week was winter, but this week it’s spring.

"Yet [generative] AI boosters earnestly insist that taking all the colours in the paintbox, mixing them together, and throwing them on a canvas creates art, not mud-coloured dreck." 💯!

First time using my Bluesky handle on slides for a talk, instead of Twitter 👏👏👏 Also can you tell design is my passion 🎨

Do not normalize frickin’ Nazi salutes. For crying out loud.

Baby elephant time!

Question: What do you do with old newspapers? I collected newspapers that featured BIG events: 9/11, Obama’s Election, when gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts, the USS Constitution’s last sailing with sail power, & other events.

Sign of the day…

More timely reading for class prep. Is the US still a democracy?

Thanks @strictscrutiny.bsky.social for chatting abt birthright citizenship and a certain op-ed. Much more to be said on how birthright predates 14A, how Black Americans fought to end their exclusion, and how Reconstruction Republicans discussed immigration. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s...

That is quite the ad. We went electric and never looked at Teslas because of Musk. We believe purchases should align with values so we got a Rivian instead.

Clio was even featured in a Zoom Room commercial. She is the brown and white schnauzer strutting on the dog walk and jumping through the tire. www.facebook.com/share/v/1A2P...

Dog Parent brag: Clio is the new Zoom Room Agility League Champion!!!

After a week away on vacation the schnauzers determined that I need double assistance today.

I leave for vacation tonight. I’m excited for scuba diving in Mexico.

This morning I read about the New England Confederacy of 1643, I’ve been editing a podcast episode about 18th-century Haudenosaunee women, and now I’m preparing to have a conversation about the Regulation Movement in North Carolina. I suppose I started in geographical N-S order.

Photos of my cute dogs because we need cuteness.

Another “Everything is Fine” Day. Not that I need anything more to worry about but I do wonder if we will become so habituated to dumpster fire days that we won’t notice them anymore. Also, for a government that is looking to cut money, re-renaming military bases costs a lot of money in signage.

Celebrating authors & books from my 35 years in publishing every day of #BlackHistoryMonth Day #12 Karen Cook Bell’s powerful account of enslaved women who fought for their freedom during and after the American Revolution. @cambridgeup.bsky.social
