"The new type of reading is really a re-creating. That means a reader has to launch his self-sense and his experiences of feelings to enter the works, and to reconstruct the essence of humanity in one’s heart." -Can Xue

Writers, @hungermtn.bsky.social is open for submissions until May 1. They are very open to hybrid pieces, and are amazing to work with. hngrmtn.org/submission/

Where they ban books, they will ultimately ban people.

I'm working on essay revisions with a lit mag editor who really believes in my work. It means so much to have one's work be seen in this way, which makes it easier to set my ego aside and try a new approach. The important thing is to reach readers.

This Valentine's Day, show some love to the people and places in your life that have helped you along the way. Libraries forever. #AuthorsAgainstBookBans #UnitedAgainstBookBans #ReadFreely

I can have three different books on library waiting lists hundreds of people long, and without fail they all come in at the same time. What to do with all this extravagance but make cup after cup of Bengal Spice tea and cozy up on the couch by the window with the pine tree.

Great reading at Third Place Books in Ravenna tonight. Much gratitude to everyone who came and listened, asked questions, bought books, and brought your curiosity. (And thanks to my friend I.M. for the photo!)

Gorgeous moonrise tonight. Just captured this - I call it "Moon Walking Tightrope"

A child bride, an Irish runaway, and an AWOL US soldier encounter incredible hardships-and find love-in the 19th-century Pacific Northwest. Based on true stories. I'll be reading and talking about it on Weds. Feb. 12 in Seattle! www.thirdplacebooks.com/event/liz-ke...

Once upon a time eggs were so cheap, they were smashed on people's cars and houses as a prank. Not that I ever did that. 😏

A big thank you to Vault Books & Brew in Castle Rock, WA for hosting my book signing yesterday. The selection is top notch, and it's a perfect stop for a quick espresso if you're traveling I-5 between Seattle and Portland. Plus they still have a few copies of THE RIVER PEOPLE.

Art would not be important if life were not important, and life is important. —Baldwin

I've been working on a presentation about the making of The River People to share at this reading. If you're in the neighborhood, come say hi! www.thirdplacebooks.com/event/liz-ke...

Rikki Ducornet, Natalya Gorbanevskaya, Can Xue, and Clarice Lispector are a few of my fave womxn authors. Who are yours? Celebrate the womxn who have made your life better through their art, music, writing, teaching, friendship, love.

Marilla Washburn traveled the Oregon Trail at age 12, married age 15, birthed her first child in a stockade at 16, and traveled 2 days alone with her baby on horseback to visit her parents. Dirt roads, thick forests, no GPS. Womxn are badass. www.unsolicitedpress.com/shop/p/theri...

"People who have no hopes are easy to control; and whoever has the control, has the power." - G'mork, The Neverending Story #dontgiveup

If you could pick one book - written by a womxn, about the female experience - that the president, VP, and big tech CEOs were all required to read, what would it be?

Seriously. Books are power. Information is power. People who want to take your power away from you don't want you to read freely or have access to truth. Ben Franklin knew this when he started America's first library. #ReadFreely

THE RIVER PEOPLE follows a child bride, an Irish immigrant, and a U.S. soldier in the 19th-century PNW. Womxn’s labor, immigration, and Indigenous rights are just a few of the topics explored. In some ways, not a lot has changed in the last 175 years. www.unsolicitedpress.com/shop/p/theri...

Writing about real people is a practice in compassion. Mentally and emotionally putting yourself into someone else’s lived experience. And also finding that you have a lot in common with them after all.

America, 170 years ago. How much has the value of a woman's labor changed since then? unsolicitedpress.substack.com/p/a-womans-w...

Thank you to Laura Gaddis for reviewing my book! ❤️ lauragaddis.substack.com/p/review-of-...

Human beings are born into this world with just themselves. No matter how much is lost to failure, you can always go back to where you started. And from that point, there is limitless potential. The odds are never better than when you have nothing left to lose. -Shunmyo Masuno

Had a great time reading and chatting with Rosalia Scalia and Mari Matthias. If you missed the livestream and want to hear a sample from THE RIVER PEOPLE, check out the recording here: www.youtube.com/live/KFbVgra...

Received a lovely note from Beatrix Gates, one of the MFA faculty at my alma mater: "Congratulations! Look forward. Celebrate all possible." Isn't that the truth. Whatever we've written or created or accomplished, always look forward. There's so much more potential in us.

Made a new playlist of symphonic post-apocalyptic fascist-grinding T*ump-abusing extreme war feminist protest rock. And maybe one or two pop songs. 😇 open.spotify.com/playlist/4Bp...

Coming up Feb. 12 in Seattle! Reading from The River People, a historical fiction / nonfiction / memoir hybrid based on the true stories of my 19th-century immigrant ancestors. www.thirdplacebooks.com/event/liz-ke...

"Most stories remain unresolved, undiscovered, like the breaking of a rule." - Michael Ondaatje

"Grand achievement is built on the steady accumulation of modest results over time. This path is long. Pace yourself." - Cal Newport

That magical moment when your author copies arrive. ❤️ For folks who provided blurbs, I'll be mailing your thank-you copy of The River People soon!

Got home from vacation to find my first shipment of the Unsolicited Press Year of Womxn Book Box Subscription! Look at how lovingly packaged this is, and these gorgeous covers (including my own new book, The River People)! #yearofwomxn #books

"...you’ll eventually get to where you need to be no matter which option you choose... all that matters is that you do your best with the choice you’ve made." -Shunmyo Masuno

Its belt buckle may say Don't Mess With Tesla, but pretty sure this robot's battery will crap out after a couple years and then be too expensive to replace 💀

Hey kids, you wanna fight fascism? Read a book and learn something. Lots of fresh perspectives here: www.unsolicitedpress.com/shop/2025-ye...

I try not to get too political on social media but this news story reminds me of Timothy Snyder's warning about authoritarianism: "Do not obey in advance." www.cnn.com/2025/01/07/t...

"I wish the days to be as centuries, loaded, fragrant." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Skull-Face Books & Vinyl in Honolulu is one of the most well-curated bookstores I've visited in a while. And super fun. www.instagram.com/skullfacehaw...

All the doors look closed until you find the one that opens. You might have to try many doors until you find the one that opens for you. The key is to keep trying.

Unsolicited Press published my essay - "A Woman’s Worth: Female Labor Over the Centuries" - on their Substack. 🎉 unsolicitedpress.substack.com/p/a-womans-w...

Finally ready for the last draft of my WIP novel. I had a couple of drafts with a lot of good scenes but some plot pieces not quite fitting together. Just finished a "scene outline" where I wrote the beginning and end scenes first, then the middle. I'm happy with this, I think.

Pre-orders available now for THE RIVER PEOPLE - Kirkus Reviews calls it "A sensitively crafted history of pioneers and immigrants for American history enthusiasts." This hybrid fiction + nonfiction book about my ancestors was both a challenge and a joy to write. bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

Just wrote about my three favorite books of 2024 at Shepherd Books. (Authors, you can promote your book for free there by doing the same!) shepherd.com/bboy/2024/f/...

New year, new-to-me book haul from a Little Free Library and Beats & Bohos Vintage & Vinyl in Greenwood. Although I've checked out Ling Ma's SEVERANCE from the library before, it's so good I bought it to read again.

Got a bookstore gift certificate for Christmas & picked up Richard Powers' PLAYGROUND. New book smell- even if not as complex as old book smell- is still intoxicating. 📚
