Absolutely wild: UK lawyers who have worked in relation to ICC Gaza investigation warned they are at risk of US sanctions, not only restricting travel there but potentially freezing their financial assets worldwide observer.co.uk/news/nationa...

We are now approaching 4,000 formally announced university redundancies in the UK since January alone. The real situation is far worse than that, and will also accelerate going forwards. www.timeshighereducation.com/news/uk-univ...

Eighty years after Mussolini's execution, nostalgia for fascism persists

Horrific attack in Vancouver, where I studied abroad long ago. [Tried repeatedly to post a link to a news article but Bluesky wouldn’t let me.]

Rümeysa Öztürk and Mahmoud Khalil are political prisoners being subjected to medical neglect, sleep deprivation, and inadequate meals. This is chilling, harrowing, and Donald Trump’s cruelty is the point. We visited them to shine a light on these violations of their rights.

The Naval Academy cancelled a freakin' Ken Burns documentary showing, not because of the content, but because Burns had been critical of Trump www.nytimes.com/2025/04/24/u...

Big news out of Louisiana! A local judge has overturned the conviction of Chris Duncan, who has spent 26 years on death row claiming his innocence. Tragic context: Roughly 80% of people on Louisiana's death row have been exonerated... and this conviction hinged on a discredited pair of doctors.

“No matter what you have done before,” Professor William McBride wrote to Annapolis’s Superintendent Adm. Yvette Davids, “your legacy will be that of a careerist who banned Maya Angelou but retained Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf.’” www.nytimes.com/2025/04/24/u...

The Trump administration deported a 2-year-old U.S. citizen on Friday.

NEW: The horrors are not aberrations. This is the Trump administration's plan. This is their plan. But the plan is just that — a plan. It can and must be stopped. My look this week, this afternoon at Law Dork —>

Jay is the lead author on a fascinating paper I was involved in, about how male mimicry by female hummingbirds provides the first example of a type of signaling system that we predicted from theoretical principles over a decade ago. This is infuriating. And I believe it's due to anti-trans bias.

Elected Dems have been scared off of immigration by polling, that retreat has created space for these eugenicist crimes against humanity. We shouldn't use polling to tell us what our values are, we should use polling to further advance the causes we value.

China has seized Sand Cay Island in the South China Sea, which belongs to Vietnam, – FT. Chinese forces occupied the uninhabited island hosting Vietnamese military facilities and a fishing station. Some suggest China may be testing regional readiness. www.ft.com/content/ae6a...

“Rümeysa Öztürk is my constituent, an accomplished scholar, and a valued member of our MA community. Like Rümeysa, Mahmoud Kahlil has committed no crime and is being punished by Donald Trump simply for exercising his right to free speech,” says Rep. @pressley.house.gov: www.cnn.com/2025/04/22/u...

One of the big reasons I decided not to become a personal finance reporter, despite 4 years of bilingual experience in retail banking, is the over-emphasis on personal effort and education instead of systemic issues and the importance of government policies and regulations.

The insatiable fascist desire to censor art alive and well over at the Federalist. Imagine seeing the David and, before anything else, questioning whether it should “get a free pass” because it depicts nudity. Sister Wendy would eat this writer for breakfast. thefederalist.com/2025/04/22/a...

In recognition of the 100 days, Skye Perryman and @mjsdc.bsky.social remind us that losing and losing and losing in court matters for a whole lot of reasons. Courageous lawyers and judges are getting results, every day, and we are grateful.

Disappointing. Biggest effort in Climate Action 2030 was to make installations more resilient against sea level rise or bigger tropical storms -- with ancillary benefit against power failures or infrastructure damage of whatever cause (squirrels, terrorism, PLAN cruise missiles, etc)

I watched this in its entirety this morning and it is *so* good and so relevant. Go watch!

The Trump-Vance admin just deported two families, including three US citizen kids ages 2, 4, and 7. Both families were detained and then blocked from communicating with attorneys or family members. One of the moms is pregnant. One of the citizen kids has cancer. Both deported without medical help.

My wife, a historian, is seeking SPECIFIC examples of history being disappeared that may not have gotten much national attention. Plaques, parks, history books removed from schools or libraries. If it was a big national story, we know, thanks. What’s happening near you?

“He is terrified, he won’t go outside, he won’t go to class.” A USF grad student with an expunged record for a misdemeanor allegation had his visa revoked—and spent his lifesavings fighting it—only for DHS to reverse course and reinstate his status. www.miamiherald.com/news/local/e...

Trump is terminating grants for a program that helps advocate for children who have been the victims of abuse and neglect. Is that the Republican Party's platform now? Abandon child victims of crime to make room to cut taxes for billionaires?

I’m licensed as a therapist but can’t get hired as a therapist because I was working in research for a few years. Was told I should go back to school for a graduate certificate in the thing I already have a Master’s + license for. Everything feels like a pyramid scheme now.

Getting pretty tired of the “future historians will say X about this time.” I promise you, PRESENT historians are saying plenty, and you don’t seem to be listening!

NEW: PublicSquare, a website that lets you search for businesses in your community that explicitly want you to know they endorse Trump/MAGA values, is backfiring as people use it to boycott those businesses. www.huffpost.com/entry/public...

Their daytime private visit to the Sistine Chapel (also mentioned in the linked article) would have bumped everyone else. Sistine Chapel private visits are usually done outside regular hours.

It's auction day for John T. Greene's raunchy, racist, sex-pun letter. A few days ago, there was a bid for $1,700, but it seems to have been withdrawn, so the current ask stands at $1,300. Let's see what else is on offer:

This presenter says they thought they were going to have slides to show and then... global news happened. 😶

Who would be down to contribute to an essay collection on Sinners? #academicsky

True crime podcasts and cable news have a lot to answer for

When these people tell you they didn’t understand he would do this please remember that they’re just liars and cowards

Now the so-called “America First” president wants to slash Americorps. Of course, the idea of people serving the public instead of cashing in on public service is an alien concept to Donald Trump. We will fight this illegal withholding of funds.

In the coming days you’ll see headlines like, “ICE Can Now Come Into Your House Without a Warrant.” They will be false. Trump’s Attorney General, who once accepted a bribe from him when she was FL AG, instructed her agents to ignore the 4th Amendment of the US Constitution. That’s the story.

I've just come back from the Cambridge Disinformation Summit where I gave the opening keynote, titled "Demanufacturing Consent - How Disordered Discourse is Destroying Democracy", featuring everything from Fake Hooves to Jackson Hinkle being the worst. www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-FV...

“For those not born in this country but residing here, due process has gone from a right to a luxury, as we’ve seen with the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia in Maryland and a mother and her three children in Upstate New York.”

DOGE deleting and leaking data at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

My PhD student's NSF grant was terminated today. Her dissertation investigates why air pollution monitoring, metrics, and regulations don't properly capture the harms experienced by marginalized communities--esp in the most polluted Detroit neighborhoods. She and I are happy to talk with press etc.

The nominee for U.S. Attorney in D.C. is a Jan. 6 conspiracy theorist and celebrant who praised a white supremacist Hitler-lover as an “extraordinary man, and extraordinary leader.” Are there no Republicans who will oppose this disgraceful nomination? www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...
