“News of constant job losses and course closures is causing lasting damage to universities’ reputations and may inflict further financial harm by hitting student recruitment.” This is consistent with feedback from many @cardiffucu.bsky.social members. www.timeshighereducation.com/news/uk-staf...

Huge public interest story about what looks to be a cover up of a stitch up about how the controversial Cardiff University Kazakhstan (CUK) was ratified. This will further damage the Uni’s tattered reputation, as well as staff & student confidence in Council & Uni bosses. 1/3 🤯👇

Oh dear. That doesn't pass the front of the Daily Mail test...

Ooops

www.thetimes.com/article/f383... Kathleen Stock arguing for the police to do more race based stereotyping on sex crimes despite the fact that we know full well that sex abuse happens among all ethnic groups.

"Gender critical" is just the EDL for people with second homes

Happy Palm Sunday All! Never forget the day that Jesus cleansed the temple and whipped the bankers. 🌴

This is the most amazing prank I have seen in a very long time

The good news is that Cardiff is reducing cuts to nursing education. The bad news is (a) the others will go ahead; (b) nursing will still be cut and Wales needs loads more nurses. No Senior Management Team should have these powers over strategic infrastructure. www.bbc.com/news/article...

@cardiffucu.bsky.social on our *very* reluctant industrial action in defence of jobs: “It’s absolutely awful that our students are going to have to suffer for the mismanagement and terrible decisions taken by Cardiff Uni bosses - we’ve got huge student support.” youtu.be/7rUT7dWQW2s?...

After my last (work-related) episode of depression I got this book. It looks great… … It’s very telling that I still haven’t had time to read it.

Philip Augar, who lead on the review of post-18 education and funding neatly summing up the failures of governance in #UKHE. Note how he links the problems directly to the lifting of the student number caps and the thoughtless scramble that inspired. #SaveHE

I’ve just been on BBC Radio Wales talking about cuts at Cardiff University, and the industrial action @cardiffucu.bsky.social members will be taking this summer against compulsory redundancies. I *really* don’t want to do a marking boycott. They suck. We may have no choice. youtu.be/9q-2uPm5zx4?...

For clarification, the number of FTEs cut is still 400. 286 is the number left over after VSS. The uni has not budged. This is NOT a scale-back.

Just had confirmation from Cardiff Business School Management Board that all of our academic staff remain at risk of redundancy.

While there were some good(ish) news at Cardiff today, with the schools of Chemistry and Mathematics miving out of scope for redundancy, and plans for the closure of nursing on hold, many in the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences remain at risk (1300 in total).

"It is unforgivable that so many of our members remain in fear for their livelihoods, especially when other sensible, evidence-based options are on the table."

The University and College Union has announced details of strikes and other forms of industrial action aimed at forcing Cardiff University bosses to reconsider their “cruel and unnecessary” job cuts and rule out compulsory redundancies ✍️Martin Shipton

Cardiff UCU: “We are incredibly reluctant to take part in any form of industrial action, let alone a marking and assessment boycott, but the university is leaving us no choice after imposing these cruel and unnecessary cuts.” www.walesonline.co.uk/news/educati...

A huge amount of work has gone into this campaign from so many people. Shows what can be achieved when enough people are willing to stand up and make their voices heard.

Cardiff nursing lectures continue to demonstrate the value they bring to the nursing profession. I am consistently impressed by the amount of passion and professionalism displayed at this uncertain and challenging time. Da iawn.

This campaign has been some of the most important work I have done in life so far. It has been such a privilege to stand beside these incredible nurses and fight for what is right for the people of Wales.

Nation Cymru on another twist in the Cardiff University Kazakhstan (CUK… yes, really) saga. “The university’s wisdom has been questioned for promoting its expansion into Central Asia at the same time as announcing proposals to cut 400 jobs and close five Schools.” nation.cymru/news/ex-depu...

Times Higher’s @julietterowsell.bsky.social on the options and challenges faced by Welsh Higher Education regulator Medr in the context of widespread University cuts…

Me on the Welsh HE regulator Medr: In Wales ‘We need to be able to stand on our own two feet as a nation. Part of that involves having a functioning and comprehensive university system – and that is under sustained attack by these kinds of cuts.’ www.timeshighereducation.com/depth/can-wa...

Former Education Minister Prof Leighton Andrews calling for a review of funding & governance of HE in Wales in the wake of Cardiff Uni (& others’) cuts scandals. youtube.com/shorts/ELazh...

@leightonandrews.bsky.social on BBC Radio Wales calling for a review of funding and governance of HE in Wales www.youtube.com/shorts/ELazh...

The more 'elite' focus of the proposals will exacerbate an already dangerous crisis of participation in HE for Welsh young people. Wales has the lowest levels of participation in UK. We need a national discussion about what HE is for before it’s cut in ways it can’t be repaired.
