I have now finished all the things I had to do today. So here are a pair of cormorants on the Thames this morning.

This is an excellent speech by the new Chancellor of Oxford University, William Hague. Lots of good jokes, but also a staunch defence of what a university should be. We're going to need a lot of that in the years ahead.

An article of faith for me is to stand up to bullies. It has caused me trouble throughout my career, and cost me opportunities. But my life is the better for it, and so would the world be, I’m convinced, if it were a principle universally applied.

Say hi to Mercury, the Roman god of messages and communication, and symbol of the #earlymodern news business. He was supposed to deliver messages and news, but on this very print it looks as if he either was just losing books on purpose or simply stumpled and fell ... So long, crashing #newshistory

I do approve of all the Latin in Conclave.

Not, it’s fair to say, the very best day of my life. But very nearly over, so that’s something.

Don't believe everything you read online. A fake news report that "lost" works of Apollonius of Perga have been newly discovered in Arabic. Actually they were discovered in the 17th century and published again in 1990. #AncientBluesky www.roger-pearse.com/weblog/2025/...

Book printing. From series of new inventions of modern times, and indeed it was an amazing one! Designed in 1600 by Jan van der Straet aka Stradanus. Today is his day.

M'learned colleague from Aberdeen here gets it exactly right: the bleak, dark mood of panic on university campuses emanates at root the fact they've lost all sense of their purpose. For me they've lost their *moral* bearings, but other colleagues may differ.
