Once again, regulators of private utilities have “misjudged” costs — resulting in windfall profits (and higher bills) Economic regulation in the UK is fundamentally broken, and needs a radical rethink www.theguardian.com/business/202...

What is the role of carbon offsetting in delivering a just transition? What new policies are required to ensure that Scotland meets its climate and nature targets? Watch the full video of our latest webinar 📽️

A huge amount is riding on two key questions: 1) Is the US constitution robust enough to restrain Trump’s authoritarianism at home? 2) Is there a strong enough international coalition to restrain his authoritarianism overseas? I fear the answer to both these questions is ‘no’

I’m not sure this lot will produce much in the way of “fresh ideas” It will be more of the same: double down on the London-centric, finance-led economic model that got us into this mess

It’s good to see the Scottish Government finally kickstarting a debate on council tax There is no excuse for retaining a system that’s unfair, regressive and inefficient. Minor reforms won’t cut it - property taxation needs to be fundamentally overhauled: www.gov.scot/news/buildin...

Council tax is regressive, unfair and inefficient. It needs to be replaced with a new system of property taxation, not reformed.

“Put simply, a significant share of the US’s ‘booming’ economy is generated by sickness” This is an excellent piece by @tejparikh.ft.com on why the US economy is not as thriving as conventional economic metrics imply www.ft.com/content/fd8c...

Useful review of the Scottish Government’s new tax strategy by @theifs.bsky.social: “It is more of a framework for producing a strategy than a strategy in itself”

Should Scotland's 'vast number' of 'economic agencies' be 'reformed' out of existence? Nah. My column from yesterday's Herald Business HQ supplement

With Trump’s economic warfare now well underway, the UK is about to find itself in a very tricky situation Although Trump says a deal "can be worked out” with the UK, this is unlikely to end well 🧵

"At a time of growing geopolitical tensions over technology and trade, the UK is a sitting duck”. Brilliant analysis by Laurie Macfarlane…#econ

Extremely concerning to see ministers force out a key regulator due to “not being sufficiently focused on growth” Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it

This isn’t the same Trump that won in 2016: it’s an altogether different beast From territory takeovers to far-right alliances — his return threatens peace, prosperity and the planet My long-read for @opendemocracy.net:
