If this Senate language on solar passes, I think we’re in a full-blown national energy crisis within 2 years. Forecasting after the cliff is even worse, but project pipelines will dry up, supply chains will convulse...and cost of new additions will soar. Assuming we can even meet demand growth. 🔌💡

This is exactly right. Anyone voting for the spending bill is voting for higher energy bills and blackouts.

The GOP bill is much worse for wind and solar than clean energy experts expected. Many were scrambling today to understand exactly what the additional tax on wind and solar means -- and how much it will slow investment. From me and Evan Halper: www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

The Senate version of GOP's budget bill dropped in the middle of the night. Astonishingly, it got EVEN WORSE. It raises energy costs, kills $100s of billions of investment in manufacturing, makes grids less reliable, increases pollution & constrains our ability to compete w/China on AI. Loser stuff.

“You know what would help a lot? Some elite disapproval—publicly and boldly expressed. While a successful democracy depends on some degree of reasonableness from voters, a successful liberal democracy also depends on responsibility and even courage from elites.” www.thebulwark.com/p/the-public...

NEW CASES - Two more measles cases were reported in Utah today, bringing the total number of cases in the state to seven, all confirmed within the last week.

“Today, the threat is to birthright citizenship. Tomorrow, a different administration may try to seize firearms from lawabiding citizens or prevent people of certain faiths from gathering to worship.” “Rather than stand firm, the Court gives way,” she wrote. https://trib.al/GaP26Gk

No refuge for the persecuted.

Sad to see that leadership didn’t approve of my suggested post language (assuming since this is what is posted) that I submitted on my last day in May as the social media manager. Allow me share some of our team’s kind words here instead:

They said they were going to do stuff like this in Project 2025 and we all said, he that’s bad, and then they said, that’s not what we’re going to do, and then the press just fell for it again and now we don’t have climate dot hecking gov.

I’ve been an author of the national climate assessment since the Bush administration. It is an incredible one-stop shop for climate info. Download the PDFs of NCA5 here:

This is a nice summary of the Spanish grid operator's reports on the May Iberian blackout. As with any big event like this, there were many interdependent causes, but the TL;DR is that 3 nuclear and 7 gas plants failed to provide the voltage control that the grid operator contracted them to provide.

This is what people don’t understand. All countries can produce electricity, many countries have to important refined oil products like gasoline and diesel using hard currency which is in limited supply. One in four vehicles sold this year will be EVs.

We knew China's rush to install solar and wind was going to be wild but WOW😮. The solar panels & wind turbines China installed in May alone, in a single month, will generarate as much electricity as: -Poland -Sweden -Norway -the UAE -North Carolina&Maryland or -Washington&Wyoming

Our infrastructure was not designed for climate change. [but was designed for skateboarding]

I just want to put this here for posterity to show that this does, in fact, also happen to Republicans

I get annoyed at the narrative that all the awareness and work on climate change hasn't done anything. Yes, global CO₂ emissions indeed continue to climb, but we don't know the counterfactual. When I was in grad school, we were on track for 5°C of warming. Now it's below 3°C. That's progress.

The security reason to electrify transport is not about oil imports, it’s economic resilience. Oil powers 90% of US vehicles, so when the price of oil spikes because of a war, people & companies pay more for energy, which hurts the economy. The more transport is electrified, econ security goes up.

Tariffs. Stock market down. Medicaid slashed Secret police throwing anyone who looks Latino in unmarked vans. National guard and marines deployed in LA. No end to the wars in Gaza or Ukraine Bombing Iran This is the worst first six months of any presidential term in my lifetime.

NEW: Cheaper batteries mean near-24/365 solar is now economic☀️ We analysed 18 years of hourly insolation data at 12 places, to see how close to 24/365 electricity it was possible to get. The sunniest places get over 90% - and up to 99% - of the way... from just $100/MWh. 🧵

Solar doesn’t sleep! Many places could already get to 90% constant solar power year round from around $100/MWh! ☀️ It's not about getting to 100%, but demonstrating the massive opportunity ☀️ + 🔋 offer. Exciting new analysis by my colleagues @kostantsa.bsky.social and @cleanpowerdave.bsky.social

Over the past decade the Gulf has seen a huge spike in heat, and likely coincidently (or maybe not) a huge spike in Major Hurricane landfalls. Today is #ShowYourStripes day! Thanks Ed Hawkins for the telling visual. Get yours: ShowYourStripes.info observablehq.com/@climatecent...

Stopping clean energy installations causes electricity prices to go up. Don’t let Congress raise the cost of making a Hot Pocket.

This is really exciting - a new Substack by a team of very senior climate experts who collectively represent centuries (yes, really!) of experience in emissions, economics, health and more: @krisebi.bsky.social, Ben Santer, Gary Yohe, Henry Jacoby, Rich Richels & Bud Ward, all legends in our field.

⚠️Global warming caused by humans is advancing at 0.27°C per decade – the highest rate since records began. This is one of the indicators updated every year by over 60 international scientists in the annual Indicators of Global Climate Change report – published today. doi.org/10.5194/essd... /1

We've just published an update on the state of climate action: a mid-year assessment of where we are with the new, 2035 NDC's submitted by governments. We HAD planned to add up the combined emissions reductions, but there was barely anything to quantify. bit.ly/CAT_NDCs_sb62

It's scary how fast the earth is warming. For a long time, the 🌊 ocean surface was warming at a slower 🐌 rate but the warming rate appears to have caught up 🐇. ➡️ In our study about the jump in SSTs, we also estimated a 0.27°C per decade warming of global SSTs (www.nature.com/articles/s41...)

There are parallels between climate change and the fascist takeover of the US. We talk about them as looming threats but they’re already here. It’s just that some people feel them more acutely than others, but they will affect us all. We have to stop them both now.

We're careening towards a cliff and smashing the accelerator instead of the brakes

The only reason Republicans have a reputation as "fiscal hawks" is that the press refuses to tell the public basic facts about what they do when they are in office.

Again, arguably the most effective and damaging lie of the past half century is that republicans are the “good at economy” party

"The US National Climate Assessment is more than a report. It is a selfless contribution that the climate community painstakingly compiles, expertly reviews and earnestly delivers to the American people. I am beside myself at losing this resource." Read more:

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Are you a journalist writing about a current heatwave? The images you choose are critical to the story. The @climateoutreach.bsky.social team have shown some ideas here which help stress the risks rather than the typical ice creams: www.climatevisuals.org/how-do-you-p...

Juneteenth calls us to understand the realities of our past, celebrate the resilience and achievements of Black Americans, and align the course of our country toward its founding creed of liberty and justice for all. Wishing everyone a meaningful Juneteenth!

Wild how the Fed chair saying that *entire regions of the United States* won’t be able to get a mortgage in the next decade barely registered as a news event

Mike Lee, the chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, released updates to his public land sell-off bill over the weekend.

This is actually a fairly big deal. I thought this was just a standard opinion piece, but it actually has the Des News editorial board on the byline. That's as close to an official statement as you can get without it coming from a church spokesperson (which, as I've said, is nearly unheard of).

Utilizing new streamlined permitting process, California approves world’s largest solar-plus-storage project www.renewableenergyworld.com/energy-stora... Giant 1.15 GW / 4.6 GWh battery + 1.15 GW solar project in Fresno County is first permitted under California expedited process. #Upshift 🔌💡

🚨 There’s a lot of horrific news out of Washington right now—but you might have missed this: Senate Republicans just introduced a plan to sell off 120 million acres of our public lands. Let me break down what’s in the bill and why it’s a full-scale land grab. 🧵

🚨 Do people know that Mike Lee snuck in a massive selloff of public lands in the reconciliation bill? There's a big chunk of the Wasatch & lower Uintas that would be for sale!! In green on this map. Call your Senators RIGHT NOW #utpol www.fieldandstream.com/stories/cons...

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? In most of the world, it is cheaper to build NEW solar than to operate existing coal.

Just from the state? No, I think anyone with a shred of decency should be very angry, and anyone who remains unwilling to condemn his cruelty may as well have said the words themselves. And this is not a lapse in his judgment; it is consistent with Lee’s behavior for years.

Good morning with good news: EV sales in Nepal reach 70% in recent months! Nepal's EV sales goal is 90% by 2030! Nepal pushes EV to slash oil import costs & to clean air. Hydro mostly powers Nepal & 94% of its 29.6 million people have grid supply. #energysky cleantechnica.com/2025/06/14/n...
