Working on my Changing Landscapes zine today seeing as I can't go to the meeting I was supposed to be at. Weirdly, I feel fine other than a tickly throat and new cough so I might as well be productive. #Photography #ThePhotoHour #Abandoned

The best thing about our work is the people we meet. People whose passion is heritage, culture & history. Andrew from Archaeology Scotland is a brilliant example of the right person, in the right job. Andrew looks after, & uncovers the very human stories behind Stobs (military & prison) Camp

Spent a fab morning up at Stobs Camp with Andrew of Archeology Scotland.

We have many hats! @mariegardiner.bsky.social in this months LandScape magazine 😀

Sometimes the framing suggests itself 😄 #Photography #ThePhotoHour

Catching up on filming for Thorpe Thewles History Group. On Friday Allan chatted about early 20th Century transport links. Today Gillian spoke about events that young David McLaren wrote about in his diaries of 1911, 1912 and 1913, including the coronation, David was very proud to receive a medal!

We've had the honour of filming Ensemble '84 from Horden, & Isango Ensemble from Cape Town South Africa, as they have brought 'Mother Courage and her children' to East Durham. The energy, creativity & hard work on display is breathtaking! Thank you for allowing us to be a small part of it

It’s Mary Anning’s birthday, so time to share @katebeaton.bsky.social’s brilliant cartoon again.

Filming folks in Thorpe Thewles today. This is John from Thorpe Thewles History Group & Graham who is the great-nephew of David McLaren. David's pre First World War diaries provide a unique insight into life in the village before the war. Thanks to The Hamilton Russell Arms & St James Church 👍

Always a delight catching up with Chris Lloyd of the The Northern Echo. We were looking through the pre Great War archive editions, for news mentioned by David McLaren from Thorpe Thewles in his diaries of 1911, 1912 and 1913 - part of a wonderful project with Thorpe Thewles History Group

Excited to say we'll be filming this in the next few days 🎬😀 www.culturednortheast.co.uk/p/review-mot...

Sam & Graham Johnson, the founding trustees of the Matchgirls Memorial Charity whose goals are to raise awareness of the Matchgirls strike of 1888. A landmark moment in industrial and union history. Thank you to Hotel Indigo Durham for being brilliant hosts 😀 #Unions #WorkersRights

Busy interview today with Sam & Graham. Talking about the 1888 Match Girls Strike & the courageous women of early Trade Unions.

Next to each other on BBC News website today

See our good friend Bill Elliott at Rickelton Primary School on Saturday (10am - 2pm). The drop in event marks 60 years since Harraton Colliery closed. The Elliots of Birtley are world famous as northern folk artists, and Bill works tirelessly to carry on the family traditions. shorturl.at/zXoLm

More filming for Thorpe Thewles History Group. Lovely to chat with military historian David Barras, about farmer's son David McLaren's experiences during the Great War. David represents so many other soldiers who, despite their wounds and trauma, managed to build new lives. #Documentary #GreatWar

This is incredible. Huge congratulations to all involved. It was a brilliant night.

We are incredibly saddened to hear that former Durham Miner Billy Middleton has passed away. We got to know Billy well over the years and loved spending time in his company. A champion of mining heritage, a rascal and such a huge loss. Rest well Billy #Mining #Durham

I appreciate you get asked for money for stuff all the time but our friend Jenny is doing a sponsored swim for Cancer Research, which is a cause close to my heart so if you can spare it, it would be amazing if you could chuck her a few quid or share ❤️ fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/jennys-...

Come on up and have a chat and a cup of tea!

It's been a busy week in Croatia & Montenego. Fabulous countries with equally fabulous people. An unforgettable time ❤️

Filming today on the Thorpe Thewles History Group diary project. Lovely interviews with Meg and Bernard about David McLaren. David was a local farmers son whose 1911, 1912 and 1913 diaries have found their way back to the village. The diaries offer an incredible look at a momentous time!

Today is yet another in a long line of frightening and disappointing days. Where did compassion go? Where did aspiration go? Where did being kind go? Our political system is all about punching down & finding the scapegoat. We demand and deserve so much more!

Working class solidarity is the foundation of our communities and on May Day we remember the workers whose sacrifice, determination and resistance gave life to the pit villages we love so much today. The image shows the Blackhall NUM banner at the May Day rally held in Easington back in 1986.

Not a bad late lunch spot in merry old England 🏰

I have not one but TWO pieces in summer's This England magazine. One large feature on Durham, and a shorter piece on the Willdora, a Dunkirk Little Ship now under the care of Sunderland Maritime History. Pick up a copy if you can 😊

The soon to be Dr is in the house 😍

Now, this is rather exciting😍

Really lovely to chat with Seb Littlewood (Head of Rural Life) at @beamishmuseum.bsky.social today, about early 20th century farming in the north east. This was a period of dramatic change, captured by farmer's son David McLaren from Thorpe Thewles in his diaries before the First World War.

Our film 'Defiant - County Durham, The Miners' Strike and its Legacy' is still very much alive, and we hope to share news with you soon. The story of Durham's battles in 84 / 85, and the ongoing fight for justice. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has given their time to this film✊

Black photographers: Shaun has a new and fantastic space to help showcase your work and experiences. He's a good egg and a safe pair of hands, get in touch #Blacksky #photography

This is such a beautiful testimonial from a son to his mother. So much more here www.theblkgze.com #Photography

Do not look away...

Filming in Thorpe Thewles this morning. Sarah is from the history group & is part of a team who have been analysing the pre First World War diaries of a local lad. The diaries are a goldmine of the everyday & the extraordinary, providing a real insight into a time just before everything changed.

Space adventure and exploration should be for the benefit of all humankind, not the whimsy of a few.

If you'd like to support an artist (why do I struggle with that word...) there are a few of my Transporter zines still left, plus some limited edition (signed, numbered) 'Tories Out!' prints which I produced for the 40th anniversary of The Miners' Strike. www.mariegardiner.co.uk/tories-out/

In memory of Anne Scargill ✊https://www.durhamminers.org/farewell_anne_scargill

So today has involved some great fun filming on the Weardale Railway, where testing of the S&DR Locomotion No 1 replica is going through trials ahead of the big September birthday. Bumped into @thehistoryguy.bsky.social and had a lovely chat about all things steam 👍

A rather busy day 😄 @historyhitsuk.bsky.social

The special sign 🙂

Our filming location for today... 🤫

We were filming local historian Ian Stubbs today about all things friction match and early 19th Century Stockton 🎬
