We cut back the school garden today and got it ready for spring. Already some of the plants are poking their leaves out of the soil or budding on last year's branches.

Seeing quite a lot of panic about this news: if VRBPAC doesn't issue recommendations about the strains for the 2025-2026 season, vaccine manufacturers will just use WHO's recommendations. The lack of US input would mean, at most, a less tailored vaccine, but it's guesswork anyway.

I was about to post measles booster info on Facebook and went to look for a neutral source. AP is probably not considered neutral by half the country anymore, is it? Ugh.

Sum: IGNORE "DIED SUDDENLY" BS! 🚨 "...found NO increase in SCA/SCD in young competitive athletes in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic..." Sudden Cardiac Arrest Among Young Competitive Athletes jamanetwork.com/journals/jam... And NO evidence COVID vaccine increases "risk of SCA/SCD in athletes."

Ooof. When we bought our current house, e-signing wasn't a thing, and none of the extra legislation following the 2008 housing bubble had passed yet. There are an overwhelming number of documents coming my way every day to "sign" with a click.

This crutch of food journalism is a pervasive problem.

I really can't tell if a significant number of my classmates used AI to answer our practice reference questions or if they were really just that terrible at the assignment. 1/3 of the class picked a children's picture book as a source to answer a factual question. And the book wasn't even relevant.

🚨🚨🚨RED ALERT, Texas book lovers. This bill (SB13) will be heard in committee on Thursday. Now is the time to let lawmakers know how bad it is. #BookSky

Heads up San Marcos and San Antonio folks. There was measles exposure Feb 14-16 at a number of universities, restaurants, and tourist attractions. Check to see if any apply to you. www.kut.org/health/2025-...

Just made my first book display 🎉 Travel by Book for Spring Break

Librarians at several universities (including my own) are posting guides for how to rescue government data. The Data Rescue Project has a good resource.

1. UPDATE The NIH is still blocking most ongoing scientific funding over concerns about DEI, according to NIH sources and internal NIH correspondence. The freeze has continued even after top NIH officials acknowledged that continuing to block the funding would violate a federal court order.

From Diane Kochilas' (@dianekochilas) book The Ikaria Way: 100 Delicious Plant-Based Recipes Inspired by My Homeland, the Greek Island of Longevity, this soup is packed with vegetables and seasoned with dill and lemon. According to Kochilas, it is "like an Ikarian garden on steroids."

Part of the reason insulin manufacturers lowered the price of insulin last year was because of changes to Medicare and Medicaid. With those changes being reversed, it's very likely insulin costs will go up for everyone.

Another utility, Xcel, says it will be carbon pollution free by 2035. We can do this for the whole country, if we only try! Don't lose faith, folks. Progress is still possible. www.startribune.com/xcel-says-it...

This vegan lentil stew, from Kiera Wright-Ruiz's (@kierawrr) new cookbook My (Half) Latinx Kitchen, is traditionally served in Ecuador as a side dish, but it's flavorful enough to enjoy on its own. Photo credit: @laurenviedallen Link to recipes https://buff.ly/4i5sjIC

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth ! Feb 21: Q: Enough about racism for a second. Take a break! I'm worried about gender issues in the US too. For example, why is the gender pay gap in the US so large? It's one of the worst in the OECD! A: You already know that it's racism. Read the entire linked thread.

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame. The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

Message from the school district: The wind-chill is in the single digits. Please, please convince your teens and tweens to wear pants and a real coat. Tell them the hoodie can go underneath. It's called "layers".

This isn't my first cat to die, but it's the one that makes me feel in my bones that we should allow euthanasia for terminally ill humans. I know there are ethical problems (hi, Canada), but forcing someone to suffer a long, slow, painful death is cruel.

This coconut, tomato, and bean soup with ginger and spices from our friend Teri Adolfo (https://buff.ly/4hUfHEe) ticks all the boxes: flavorful, quick to prepare, and nutritious. She makes it often in her electric pressure cooker and tells us it takes her 20 minutes start to finish!

hey for anyone who might want to actually own their kindle books instead of renting them, or who might be thinking of switching to kobo etc and will want to convert them to epubs, you now only have one week before amazon kills your ability to download its ebooks www.theverge.com/news/612898/...

Pants warning. Find the nearest tween and be firm.

The person on the phone who helped up schedule our cat's euthanasia was incredibly kind. That must be a really difficult job.

We had vegan meat sauce, sauteed baby kale, and garlic bread for dinner, and I'm suddenly regretting not making it into a sandwich.

I turned in my portfolio for my master's today! By mid May I'll be done with my last two classes and my practicum.
