Keir Starmer - a powerful and personal statement 'It is in UK and US interests to stand by Ukraine with security guarantee – a bad peace deal would be a disaster for all' www.thesun.co.uk/news/3351474...

Astonishing that within a month of Trump's inauguration, there seems to be a consensus across Europe for massive rearmament.

I have to confess I wasn't expecting the right-wing journalists who reliably spin for billionaires to stand up for Zelenskyy after the attacks by Trump and Musk. So, for once: Well done!

Comprehensive account of the chaotic local government reorganisation in Devon and Cornwall exeterobserver.org/2025/01/29/s...

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame. The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

Trump’s standing in the UK - what little there was - is collapsing further after the events of the last few days. A new YouGov poll of Brits find just 3% agree with him that Ukraine was the cause of the war. That’s 13% below those who think the moon landings were faked.

I’m George Takei and I approve of this message.

Calling Zelensky a “Dictator” must be where the line is drawn. It is my sincere hope that the whole political spectrum in the United Kingdom will speak with one voice in opposition to Trump’s lies.

If you’d asked AI to write a piece of Russian propaganda in the style of Donald Trump, this is what you’d get. Well done America, you’ve elected a Russian asset as your President.

Spain has used immigration to grow the economy and sustain the welfare state. As immigration has increased, GDP has surged and unemployment has fallen. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

I think the benefits of this line are that it puts the Right-wing on the defensive; it frames Farage's populism as the incumbent philosophy; it accepts that small boats are a problem but not that immigration is per se.

For years now we've tried Farage's way: - We Brexited and our economy has stagnated. - We cut off legal routes for refugees and the small boats have mushroomed. - We sucked up to the US and our global influence has plummeted. Isn't it time to try a different way?

FEATURES // Will Devon’s eleven councils find common ground as local authority reorganisation deadline looms? A county-wide consensus is gaining traction with only Exeter City Council standing in its way while County Hall has yet to make up its mind. exeterobserver.org/2025/02/18/d...

He genuinely says in this that maybe Donald Trump knows more about climate change than the best scientists at NASA It would be funny if his party weren’t doing so well in the polls

The billionaire class seeks to install governments that eschew - regulation - taxes - transparent awarding of contracts By this argument, Musk and Trump don't start from fascist ideology, but end up as fascism fellow travellers in pursuit of profit. blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandp...

Measures to democratise decision-making and strengthen accountability are needed if the UK is to improve policy delivery and curtail cronyism blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandp...

Such a strong and stable president

I'm still expecting Trump to propose that Russia can have Ukraine if the US gets Greenland

Ok folks, deep breaths. There is very real reason to worry about the dynamic emerging between Washington and Moscow when it comes to Ukraine. But there is also very real reason to believe that Ukraine and Europe can create a better outcome. (A rather long 🧵, obviously) /1

A new @neweconomics.bsky.social report by me and Emmet Kiberd is out today, showing that in the midst of climate and nature emergencies when we urgently need to prioritise public transport and active travel, new builds lock England into car dependency. 1/3 neweconomics.org/2024/11/trap...

I'm no fan of Rachel Reeves or the current Labour leadership at all, but what on earth is the BBC doing spending so much time on such trivial allegations, when there were zero consequences for big blatant lies from, say, Boris Johnson, Iain Duncan Smith, and Jeffrey Archer?

Fully expecting Trump to say now that the price of eggs is at an all time low thanks to him

"Capitalism vs Democracy" Interesting, though I think small things can be done to constrain the power of concentrated wealth (media ownership, co-operative models, local scrutiny of development, sortition) to reduce distortions in democracy stumblingandmumbling.typepad.com/stumbling_an...

What the left can learn from Richard II ino.to/USaKgbx

It's utter madness. In today's column I discuss how Labour in the UK, just like Trump in the US, is dismantling the administrative state. And how this makes its other plans, including the good things it's trying to do, impossible to implement. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

If this were Just Stop Oil, there'd have been dozens of arrests, furious denunciations in the billionaire press and, perhaps, long jail sentences. Farmers have a right to protest, and the police respect it. Other people, it seems, not so much. The real #TwoTierPolicing www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/...

@owenjones.bsky.social This is just sickening: bsky.app/profile/lonw...

Excellent article. If Labour are to make policy changes on poverty that can stick, they must craft a new story of social security as a supportive investment in people, and abandon the tired trope of scroungers needing to be bullied out of indolent ways. blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandp...

One agenda dominates contemporary politics: a "melange of gossip, fantasy and lies". So how do we shift from the politics of crank issues, vibe and Westminster soap opera to scientific questions of how to improve living standards? stumblingandmumbling.typepad.com/stumbling_an...

Centrism is a sailboat that gathers the prevailing political wind - and if that is fascism it will tack in that direction.
