🚨 3-year Postdoc Position at MPIB Berlin @mpib-berlin.bsky.social (deadline: 15 July) We're hiring a postdoc to study why some citizens in Germany have become disillusioned with liberal democracy and shared reality, and how these shifts relate to social media use and broader societal polarization.

We are hiring, @arc-mpib.bsky.social a postdoc for a project to investigate why citizens feel alienated from liberal democracy and how a shared sense of reality can be restored. Work with @lfoswaldo.bsky.social @anaskozyreva.bsky.social, Ralph Hertwig and me: www.mpib-berlin.mpg.de/2084802/2025...

I am privileged to announce the publication of the Anti-Autocracy Handbook: sks.to/autocracy 1/12

Maybe of interest to everyone working in or curious about Computational Social Science (CSS). If you're looking to build or sharpen your #CSS skills, check out our hands-on courses in the #GESISworkshop program and #GESISfallseminar: đź”— www.gesis.org/workshops đź”— www.gesis.org/fallseminar

So, this is how things look when a society reached a tipping point from which there is no easy way out, and those in power continue to reinforce their position. They must be stripped of the levers that got them there, and everywhere else we have to pay close attention to prevent it from happening.

🎥 www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j4Q...

Interested in improving researcher's access to social media data? Kate Dommett and myself are hiring for a Research Fellow (1 year; based at Sheffield) for an exciting new project to be announced soon: jobsite.sheffield.ac.uk/job/Research...

📰📉 Headlines are getting longer – and more like clickbait A new study of 40 million online news headlines finds news has shifted online with longer, more negative, curiosity-driven language. This trend cuts across quality and politics. 🔗 doi.org/10.1057/s415... #SciComm #DigitalMedia 🧪

[New WP] With the closure of major social media APIs and the new data access mandates under DSA, we enter what we call the "post-post-API" era. But have researchers obtained the data they need? Our recent survey (180) + interview (19) study suggests a stark reality. đź”— arxiv.org/abs/2505.09877 1/3

How is regional loss of manufacturing jobs linked to populism? In a new paper in @pvs-journal.bsky.social, @mbayerlein.bsky.social, Anne Metten & I find that industrial decline in Germany shapes electoral support for left-wing rather than far-right populist parties. A thread. 🧵👇 shorturl.at/RIjCr

(1/4) Ever wondered what tech policy might look like if it were informed by research on collective intelligence and complex systems? 🧠🧑‍💻 Join @jbakcoleman.bsky.social, @lukethorburn.com, and myself in San Diego on Aug 4th for the Collective Intelligence x Tech Policy workshop at @acmci.bsky.social!

I did a podcast recently in (my rather fossilized) German. Quite an adventure. They did a great editing job and made me sound almost grammatical: www.ardaudiothek.de/episode/gros... (perhaps of interest @ulliecker.bsky.social @lorenzspreen.bsky.social @philippmarkolin.bsky.social )

So glad to see this out as a preprint!

There's a suspected foreign interference campaign taking place on Meta ahead of this weekend's presidential election in Poland. Normally, these things are small/use lots of accounts to run ads. This one (in green) is big, and uses just two.

New preprint with @jbakcoleman.bsky.social @lewan.bsky.social @randomwalker.bsky.social @orbenamy.bsky.social @lfoswaldo.bsky.social where we argue for a complex-system perspective to understand the causal effects of social media on society and for a triangulation of methods arxiv.org/abs/2505.09254

We’ve been working on this for a while and it’s great to see it live. Despite a lot of effort into understanding the impact of social media, consensus and effective policy seem elusive or insufficient. We try to to breakdown why that may be occuring and what a path forward might look like.

I'm excited that I can finally share what I've been working on for the past 9 months: The United Nations 2025 Human Development Report: "A matter of choice: People and possibilities in the age of AI" 🧵 hdr.undp.org/content/huma...

Every day that I analyze data is marginaleffects (marginaleffects.com) appreciation day. It turns out that some of the supposed "trade offs" in modeling are not trade offs at all if you don't spend your time staring at coefficients and instead query your model with marginaleffects.

After 3 years in the making, our Registered Report is out in @nathumbehav.nature.com! We analyse nationally representative UK data from 3,340 adolescents (aged 11–19) to examine how social media use differs between those with and without mental health conditions. 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I am so excited that this is now out. An absolutely **mammoth** amount of work, please give this thread a read ⬇️💪💪

Reading the news, it feels like the pressures of the attention economy to simplify everything are gradually eroding our collective ability to deal with complex issues, and populists are benefiting from this. But the world is complicated and often unintuitive, and we need expertise to disentangle it.

The mods of r/ChangeMyView shared the sub was the subject of a study to test the persuasiveness of LLMs & that they didn't consent. There’s a lot that went wrong, so here’s a 🧵 unpacking it, along with some ideas for how to do research with online communities ethically. tinyurl.com/59tpt988
