Age yourself with a movie you saw in the theatre. (and apropos of the current moment)

I've had what I think is flu this week. It came with a heaping side of inner ear symptoms, so I've been a little dizzy and now I can hear my ears trying to pop when I lie down and breathe - so that's weird. 🥴 Spouse is in the throes of it now, and his version is worse. I had a flu shot & he didn't.

Okay, we're clearly living in the end times now, right?

The Chewy homepage seems to be down for me at the moment, and I'm having some real first-world nervousness that I won't be able to procure our calico lady's preferred & somewhat hard to find wet food in time here. 😬

Ky. shows why putting all disaster relief onto states is a bad idea: We’re getting “once a century” disasters every few years, they’re expensive as hell, & the GOP state legislature won’t proactively change the industry-friendly laws that often worsen disasters. kentuckylantern.com/2025/02/19/w...

society went wrong ever since people stopped buying those cat clocks where the tail is the pendulum and the eyes move back and forth

When universities are forced into a recession, the U.S. is forced into a recession.

I think it's important to say that these are not "budget cuts" at NIH and NSF. If they want to cut the next budget, they should talk to Congress. This is withholding money that's already authorized.

A Primer on Indirect Cost Rates

Small colleges and unis have lower overhead - because they do less research. We need less support for compliance and reporting, facilities and infrastructure. And yet, the lowest I've ever heard was 25%.

I have been thinking a lot about one scene from a late episode of _The Americans_ with the character of Oleg Burov and Spoiler space ...his wife. I can't find the exact quote, but the gist of it is, she pleads with him not to go back into danger because they have a nice little life (1)

Going to bed with my comfort read of the moment, Kate Quinn's The Briar Club. The halcyon days of the Truman and Eisenhower presidencies and the downfall of McCarthyism. Good night all; be kind to yourselves and others.
