The @principlesfirst.bsky.social conference was just evacuated due to a bomb threat. This is after Enrique Tarrio and members of the Proud Boys showed up and tried to disrupt the conference yesterday.

Five things I did last week #1

A new website created by about a dozen federal employees, called “We the Builders,” aims to be a secure outlet for government workers to share stories about how their workplaces are being impacted by DOGE, and a place to explain the real-world impact of its access to government tech systems.

It’s hard to imagine two groups being more vindicated by events that the the resistance libs and the never Trump Republicans. They were right about Trump and how serious a danger he was from the jump. /1

What's the bluesky equivalent of a "tweet" and "tweeted"? "blueski" and "blueskied"? "sky" and "skyed"? Or do we keep "tweet" and "tweeted" as homage to the OG Twitter?

A year ago,Putin killed Navalny in prison. This didn't push the Russian opposition into uniting&fighting Ukraine is the one who continues fighting Putin, paying the price with lives of Ukrainians Unite around Ukraine.Support our Defense Forces. This is where the battle for the future is taking place

As a political scientist who studies countries that managed to stop the slide into authoritarianism, I can assure you that ***refraining from provoking the authoritarian*** is not how it works. Without further ado, I will now go tear out another chunk of hair.

Just based on the abstract I like this, reading it now and adding it to my noheroes list (sootyempiric.blogspot.com/p/no-heroes-...). philpapers.org/rec/SVOWTG?r...

What a united Europe does next will determine future of not only Ukraine but the whole of the continent, and then the whole world. 2025 is going to be about what actions democracies (don’t) take, not what some others say. Actions speak louder than words. Europe it’s your move. Make it a good one.

Evidence is what powerful people say it is. Brace for a very rough ride over the next few years.

Important to know, but relevant only in the reality-based community.

"Vice President JD Vance and Elon Musk have challenged decades-long approaches to political extremism that were designed to prevent another Hitler."

If anyone knows a potential PhD student, I can highly recommend this PI and the Icelandic Vision Lab-- it is such a great environment! And, I know this because I'm basically an honorary member of the Lab-- haha!

Clearly, JD Vance learned so much from his trip to Dachau the day before.

Just a reminder that Germany was the center of scientific progress until the Nazis suppressed, drove away, or killed all the non-Nazi scientists.

“The loss of Democracy is not an event, it’s a process”. Ewan Mawarire explains how people in a dictatorship are secretly looking for other people to dissent. He shares his story about how he stood up to a dictator and started a revolution in Zimbabwe. www.powerofusnewsletter.com/p/how-to-cha...

Hello! I'm looking to hire a post-doc, to start this Summer or Fall. It'd be great if you could share this widely with people you think might be interested. More details on the position & how to apply: bit.ly/cocodev_post... Official posting here: academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/14723

I found this to be an informative and provocative read - what happened to cognitive science? Authors argue, based on bibliometric and scientometric analysis, that cognitive science as a discipline is basically dead. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Happy to report that APA wrote this letter, gathered a coalition across science, and will now pay for ads for it to be disseminated in Science and Chronicle of Higher Ed to spread the word!! unitedsciencealliance.org

Canada & the world face two primary threats - the right wing & climate change. How to fight both at the same time? Use Canadian steel & aluminum to manufacture the things needed to replace USA exports to the world that also reduce O&G use. Heat pumps Renewables Hydrogen related Transit ... Canada...

Said it before and will say it again many times. With Congress facing a March govt shutdown and debt limit default, Dems must not offer a single vote to GOP efforts. The GOP broke it, they bought it. The highest calling for Dems is to let the American people see GOP malfeasance, not cover for it.

"I want you to shush your ----- mouth"

It was never about “free speech.”

I agree – given Musk’s deep involvement in anti-science and anti-equality efforts in the USA, the Royal Society should concede his actions are at odds with continuing tenure with their society. (That in addition to his recurring ugly behaviour toward others.)

Elon Musk's DOGE team gained access to NASA today. Musk is the CEO of SpaceX, which is NASA's largest private contractor. This is a MAJOR conflict of interest. Let's talk about it👇

I barely had any idea what I was doing 90% of the time😅 #academia #phd #AcademicSky #PhDchat

Not the 1st, only or last one to say it, but storytelling needs to be central to a scientist/researcher's toolkit. Not "storytelling" that we see in academic reports. Real storytelling to engage others #PhDs (at least in western societies) need a big revamp & this should be a priority for #training

Scientists, now more than ever, need to explain their work to the public. Many years ago now, I gave a TEDMED talk about my lab’s research. 🧠 🧪 www.tedmed.com/talks/show?i...

The MIT Open Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science is a growing resource, expertly edited and designed, with high quality contributors (OK OK I am one of them) oecs.mit.edu

The good news is that reactionary centrists are engaging in some self-reflection on the excesses of the right-wing backlash to 'wokeness.' The bad news is that they are saying it is woke people's fault. archive.is/CaC56

We're looking for a PhD student for a project on how to make theme parks more inclusive for neurodivergent people, in partnership with Katapult and Drayton Manor. www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/cen... Deadline 5th March. Get in touch for more info and please share!

Can’t believe I’m typing this but… FUCK IT IM PLANNING A STAND UP FOR SCIENCE PROTEST IN DC. If you want to be involved, be dm me. I’m nervous, I’ve never done this before, but we gotta be the change we want to see in the world.

I know this site only reaches a subset of neuro/ cog professors. If you know a young professor in the area who would benefit from a week of targeted learning about doing good science, good mentoring, networking etc, it would be great if you could forward them: compneurosci.com/Neuro4Pros/i...
