This past 1/10 marked a year since the passing of my dear friend Tatiana Melguizo. I had planned so many ways to commemorate the day. In the end, I didn’t do anything. It was too sad & too soon. Then came the big February gutting of IES. A thread 🧵 (full version here: www.lsantibanez.com/thoughts)

and now a colleague told me he was told there is no longer any access to NCES data. Wow.

And I'm now seriously concerned about what they can do with Dept of Ed funding. Particularly $ for IEPs and other services (ELs), and enforcing of those IEPs and services. Yes it costs $$$$ to educate and support children with special needs yet somehow it doesn't seem like DOGE cares much.

Just got an email from #IES to pause all work as a panel reviewer. Got another one about #NIH grants affecting our university. I guess this administration feels like destroying the world's best higher education system is a good use of their time.

this seems like an all out attack on academia, universities, research centers and public schools generally. It’s only been a week.

This should not be surprising to anyone in contact with teenagers (or students generally), but seeing these numbers highlights the magnitude of the fight to capture student attention. www.pewresearch.org/internet/202...

I am very excited to partner with the Overdeck Foundation and the Parent-Teacher Home Visits organization to study how home visiting affects elementary and middle school students’ chronic absenteeism, with a special focus on ELs and low-income gruops @uclacts.bsky.social overdeck.org/news-and-res...

In California, nearly 50% of all Black and Native American children had been investigated by Child Protective Services by their 18th birthday. 😲 That is an astounding number. A high proportion of reports (82%) come from mandated reporters, many of whom are Teachers. lao.ca.gov/handouts/soc... 🧵👇🏼
