Incredible news from Malaysia: the state of Sarawak will not award any new permits for oil palm plantations 'for now', a senior minister said on February 20. He said Sarawak aimed to mitigate deforestation, citing international scrutiny in particular from the EU. www.thevibes.com/articles/new...

In an open letter alongside 39 other orgs, we are calling on the @ec.europa.eu to ensure a robust EU Deforestation Regulation benchmarking system that evaluates environmental and human rights risks #EUDR www.hrw.org/sites/defaul... @hrw.org @lucianatellez.bsky.social

The Indonesian government wants to turn 20 million hectares of forest into areas for food and energy production and water reserves. It creates the illusion that Indonesia must decide whether to feed its people or save its rainforest, but... www.msn.com/en-us/news/w...

Amid growing concerns about its existing air pollution problem, Turkish authorities have approved the expansion of one of Türkiye’s biggest coal power plants. Together with HRW colleagues, we analysed air quality data and talked to residents in the area last year: www.hrw.org/news/2025/01... ⬇️🧵

The world's biggest carbon offsetting registry, Verra, failed to properly investigate allegations of human rights abuses against Indigenous people in Cambodia, the NGO @carbonmarketwatch.bsky.social says. SourceMaterial visited the project to investigate. www.source-material.org/singapore-ca...

The only offsets we believe in: working out so you can eat more holiday sweets.

🧵 @hrw.org has been seeking accountability for Indigenous rights violations at a major carbon offsetting project accredited by Verra, the standard setter that issues two of every three credits in the voluntary carbon market. www.hrw.org/news/2024/02...

The voluntary carbon market, an industry selling a false solution to the climate crisis, is also failing on human rights. Op-ed by Human Rights Watch(@hrw.org) and the Centre for Research on Multinational Companies (@somoamsterdam.bsky.social) aje.io/ail9tr

The Milei government in Argentina just revoked a law that protected Indigenous communities from forced eviction. The measure argued this was necessary to protect private property and allow ‘productive activities’ but… www.infobae.com/politica/202...

Chhoeung Chheng, a Cambodian journalist covering environmental and forest issues, was shot and killed by a suspected illegal logger in Siem Reap province. Suspect has been apprehended and confessed. This has not been a good year for journos or the environment in Cambodia.

Today EU institutions came to an agreement to postpone the implementation of the EU Deforestation-Free Products regulation without altering its substance. It's a huge relief. The EPP and its far right allies tried to gut this milestone environmental legislation, and they failed. Serves them well.

I spoke to @france24.bsky.social about our @hrw.org investigation into Indigenous rights abuses at one of the world's largest carbon offsetting projects, located in Cambodia. Our efforts to pursue accountability for rights violations are ongoing - watch this space. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZr3...

As new folks joined, I'll take this chance to introduce myself again. I research how large scale deforestation or forest conservation impact Indigenous peoples + other rural communities. In partnership with community members, we advocate for respect for their rights. My work> linktr.ee/lucianatellez

I just published an op-ed on Euronews in defense of the EUDR. Delays or amendments would be bad for the environment, bad for human rights - and bad for businesses that have stepped up to comply and were counting on stability and continuity of the rules as they are. www.euronews.com/my-europe/20...

My op-ed "Systems failure in the voluntary carbon market" is out today. I lay out how oversight mechanisms that should have prevented rights abuses failed Indigenous people in Cambodia at every turn in a major carbon offsetting project. www.qcintel.com/carbon/artic...

Crucial questions about carbon offsetting projects: (1) do they reliably reduce or avoid emissions? (2) do they benefit locals? Faced with existential questions on (1), industry has turned to (2), claiming projects help end poverty. I argue evidence is lacking👇 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Too many carbon offsetting projects are ineffective globally and abusive locally.  My Daily Brief on addressing the climate crisis: 📰 English: www.hrw.org/the-day-in-h...  📰 Français: www.hrw.org/fr/news/2024...  📰 Deutsch: www.hrw.org/de/news/2024...  🔊 Listen: www.hrw.org/video-photos...

Join us today at 12pm ET (9am PT; 6pm CET) on LinkedIn👇with me, Josh Gabbatiss from @carbonbrief.org , and Gilles Dufrasne from Carbon Market Watch. I’ll share new info on @hrw.org report about Indigenous rights violations at major REDD+ project. www.linkedin.com/events/human...

I interviewed "Ke" in O'Som. Like many Indigenous people, collecting sustainable forest products is a source of livelihood. He described a harrowing encounter with Wildlife Alliance and the Ministry of Environment rangers at their REDD+ project. Our full @hrw.org report: www.hrw.org/news/2024/02...

Human Rights Watch just released a 118pp report on rights abuses at one of the world’s largest REDD+ projects. We documented a flawed consultation process, forced evictions, and arbitrary arrests. Verra should ensure accountability and remedies for victims. www.hrw.org/news/2024/02...

Our Human Rights Watch 118-pages report on the human rights impacts of one of the world's largest REDD+ projects will be available at this link tonight at 7pm EST > hrw.org/news/2024/02... Protecting forests is critical - so is protecting human rights. There should be no trade off.
