A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die. Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

In Florida, a trans college student faces a misdemeanor trespassing charge punishable by up to 60 days in jail for using the restroom It is the first known instance of a trans person being charged with potential jail time under a bathroom ban law Justice for Marcy Rheintgen

“My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness. Continue to allow humor to lighten the burden of your tender heart.” -Maya Angelou Happy birthday, Maya Angelou.

Jewish Students Chain Themselves to Columbia Gates to Protest ICE Jailing of Mahmoud Khalil

This is functionally what the Cass Review was in the UK and lots of people in prestige media swallowed it whole while accusing trans people ourselves of "politicizing science" by pointing that out

As he broke a record set when Thurmond stood against the Civil Rights Act, Booker said, "I'm not here, though, because of his speech. I'm here despite his speech. I'm here because, as powerful as he was, the people were more powerful."

I swear to god there is a separate LinkedIn just for dudes with histories of misogynistic violence, how are they even finding this many scumbags

Good news is rare these days so here's some: This winter's COVID wave was less than half as deadly as last year's covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-t...

*standing on stage to give out million-dollar checks to people who signed up to vote for a judge I like* George Soros paid those hecklers to be here

A really cool new study on the impact of climate activism has just dropped! Some highlights: 1) "There is strong evidence that climate activism shifts public opinion and media coverage in a pro-climate direction, but this varies by context and the tactics employed."

Gave me a giggle

“After being shaved, the detainees were stripped naked…Their clothes thrust into black garbage bags to be thrown out with their hair…They entered cold cells, 80 per cell, with steel planks for bunks, no mats, no sheets, no pillow. No television. No books. No talking. No phone calls and no visitors.”

My latest, about how both the media and the Democrats are failing to meet the moment.

This is a good write up by @cofford.bsky.social. Pay attention to this bit. I hate to say it but the people pushing the misinformation know how to work the system better than serious scientists who are trapped in the hellscape of modern scientific publishing. 🧵 1/4

Every time I find one of these, I laugh harder. Today's find - headlines saying that mangoes can improve diabetes. The study was funded by BIG MANGO. Wonderful stuff. Better than fiction.

Sure conservatives have MMA and monster trucks, but sometimes I do /four/ wordles at once.

The New York Times is the first to put out comprehensive estimates on the cost of a year without U.S.A.I.D. and they’re higher than I thought: - 1.65 million deaths from AIDS - 500,000 from lack of vaccines - 550,000 from lack of food aid - 290,000 from malaria - 310,000 from TB

1. What you see here is clearest illustration why things are so messed up and why it cannot get any better until this asymmetry is addressed. Put simply: the right-wing has narrative dominance. My org @mmfa.bsky.social did this study and has been sounding this alarm for years. Some thoughts...

I mean, the gross absurdity to "woke liberals word police discussions about gender" is that Trump is literally *forbidding* us from even using the word gender, let alone talk about it. The Census is *removing the word gender* from federal surveys. What planet are these people living on?

😐

Putting an economist in charge of the National Institutes of Health is like putting my dog in charge of my grocery list. I know he’s got a lot of strong opinions on the subject matter but he also tries eating rocks and wasps.

All available evidence has shown that ‘conversion therapy’ does not work and causes significant and long-term harms. The first amendment does not protect the right to inflict material harm on others.

very likely that they’re about to find a constitutional right to forced conversion therapy

This is all To pay for a tax cut for very wealthy people

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

"Behind every great woman in science, there’s another great woman in science To mark International Women’s Day on 8 March, six award-winning female scientists highlight women who have inspired them by pushing innovative research and creating opportunities for others." www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Truly wild

This memo says that a direct result of Rubio blocking USAID funding is the death of literally millions of children

The placement of trans rights as the least consequential is frankly disgusting, it adds insult to the injury being inflicted by the US government. This whole exercise is useless and distracts from actual meaningful discussion.

This is one big problem with these laws. If I am supposed to use women's rooms, then many many cis men can too, WAY more easily than having to convince someone they're trans women.

The #HPV vaccine has decreased high grade cervical dysplasia in the USA by 80 % in the youngest age group. Reported in today's MMWR. #MedSky + #ObGynSky. www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes...

Scientists: We may have finally found a cure for one of the cruelest human diseases! The United States:

Yes! The people defending this as trolling don’t understand what trolling is. “Libs will get offended by ANYTHING these days” only works if the thing you’re doing isn’t offensive!

This data is way too limited but this could be a cure for pancreatic cancer. How can we know if it is? And if it is, how can we access it? By funding scientific research. And with health agencies that can review data to ensure safety & efficacy, approve new treatments, & make sure they are covered.

Slay of the day by Federal Judge Reyes.

“It funds work that makes no sense like giving CT scans to homeless people” The research was to address the fact that unhoused people have a mortality rate for lung cancer that’s more than 2x that of housed people. CT is the gold standard for lung cancer screening. Doesn’t make sense to him, though

If people were really just dying from chronic diseases then how come they weren’t dying from their chronic diseases until after March, 2020?

Just look at these paragraphs from the AP story. Hegseth called Brown unqualified solely because he's Black. Then they fired him... and replaced him with a white guy so indisputably unqualified that he requires a Presidential waiver. This is what "merit" means to them. apnews.com/article/trum...

A thread fact checking Trump's claims about Ukraine, which appears to have come directly from the Putin propaganda agency. 1/8

We’ve known for 30 years that this is a waste of money that prevents Americans from being safe
