Now's the time of year Powerful Owl chicks leave their parents' territories. We haven't seen or heard any Owlets for a while, so this was probably one of the last ones of the season to go. Despite a dodgy eye, it's been seen with prey, flies well, and was off on its own hunting. #birds #wildoz

A new Powl! And not just one. While we were waiting to see if this one would call a second Powl hoo-hooed from behind. The pair then spent some time together calling and allopreening suggesting they're a breeding pair, hopefully there's a hollow nearby big enough to raise Powl chicks. #birds #wildoz

Powerful Owls do not use tree hollows to roost during the day. They find a protected, leafy spot often above a creek where they take advantage of the cool breezes. They have two sleep modes, asleep and very asleep. #birds #wildoz #owls

No owls seen today, but nice to see a Coastal Carpet Python curled up digesting its dinner. As Lunar New Year is celebrating the year of the Wood Snake, it seemed fitting. #wildoz

The female Powerful Owl eyes off the male's roost before deciding it's a better option. He, on the right, shuffles off to the side while a passing Noisy Miner catches her attention.

It's said that you can identify a female Powerful Owl by its narrower, more rounded head. We've found this is not the case and head shape depends on feather arrangement, mood, and weather. The female POwl in thicker, squarer head mode. #birds #wiloz #owls

The Powerful Owlet with a Flying Fox. We've seen a couple of juveniles with prey recently and even a couple of siblings hunting together! They'll all be heading off soon, hopefully to find their own territories. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

Powerful Owls close their eyes while preening their impressive talons. This POwlet often spends a couple of seconds post preen staring downwards, probably adjusting its sensitive eyes to the light. #birds #wildoz

This young Grey Butcherbird stole a Christmas tree decoration. A juvenile pair sorted through the pile, dropping the sparkly ones. Perhaps they were too heavy, or too gaudy. I'm not sure where the decoration ended up, if you happen to find an angel in your garden. #birds #brisbane #wildoz

The Powerful Owlet with the damaged eye. As it tracked movements in the bush it looked like every other young POwl we follow. With eyes on the front of their heads rather than on the side they can often cope much better than other birds if they lose sight in one eye #birds #wildoz #brisbane

This young Powerful Owl with an eye injury was looking healthy roosting with its sibling yesterday. When first seen a friend contacted a raptor rescue expert who said they can often manage with only one eye. This one has been seen displaying a possum and looks like it's doing ok. #birds #wildoz

This Powerful Owlet parents always kept a close eye on it by roosting together. As it gains some independence it's beginning to find it's own roosts, often nearby. POwls can be difficult to tell apart. Thankfully the few floofy feathers around the neck of this youngster help #birds #wildoz #owls

After almost 200mm of rain last week the Powerful Owl family moved roosts to one they rarely use. I'm not sure if it was any dryer but once the sun came out yesterday they were back in their usual spot. The male Powerful Owl enjoying the sunshine. #birds #wildoz

POwls in this conservation park haven't been monitored for a few years. It was a new area for us and as every tree looked as though it should house a Powerful Owl it was especially exciting to look up and see these 2 new healthy owlets! #birds #wildoz
