I make the music for when everybody knows mom needs some space

Some folks have asked, given recent news, “how do I show my friends/family the impact of NSF?” We have some easy Fact Sheets for you! Here’s a brief thread about this website: new.nsf.gov/about/fact-s... which hosts a ton of useful one-pagers.

Reserving the right for contractors to make money building shitty houses that can't withstand natural disasters. "One FEMA study, looking at 18 million houses built since 2000, found that having modern building codes avoided $32 billion dollars in damage." www.npr.org/2025/02/20/n...

These cuts target anyone working on climate, environmental justice, equity, and DEIA, which is basically...anyone who is working to *plan* for natural disasters. You can't plan in a vacuum; you need to know demographics, critical infrastructure, etc. This isn't "woke"; it's common sense.

No one believes in climate change more than insurance companies.

I see. So what you’re telling me is we need to organize a grassroots, civil-rights-style mobilization of the people to fight for the restoration of the germ theory of disease.

If you have a Peacock subscription, you should watch the mixed doubles Olympic curling trials next week! Especially if you live in Duluth, Superior - anywhere in Minnesconsin, really. So much Upper Great Lakes region talent (I will not use the useless "midw*st"). www.usacurling.org/press-releas...

Now that reserved seats are a thing in movie theaters, I never know what to do when someone is in my seat. Last time it happened, the person said, "Oh, I don't think it matters," but all I could think was "OK but now we have to sit in someone else's seats, and what if they care?!"

Musk's brain is pickled, but still it's astounding how much he hates federal funding of science, when he would nobody and nothing without it. He should be thanking Al Gore, not mounting a coup. www.salon.com/2025/02/11/e...

“Why do I need NOAA? I’ve got a weather app.” Is equivalent to asking “Why do I need farms? I can go to the supermarket.” www.noaa.gov/about-our-ag...

“The scientific community needs to speak up - not just for the sake of science, but of human decency, dignity, and morality.” www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/scie... 🧪 🌊⚒️

As expected, the Trump team is already deleting climate info from government websites. In anticipation, our team at Urban Ocean Lab created a permanent archive of 100+ key resources and published a permanent archive: www.urbanoceanlab.org/resource-hub 👩🏽‍💻

Why have the efficiency of 1 FEMA when you could have 50 duplicative agencies? FEMA is a classic example of where federal control is preferrable: massive costs at unpredictable times that couldn't reliably be paid by states.

Taking a step back and looking things over on the eve of the big day, my main takeaway is that you really have to like Ichiro's chances of making the Hall of Fame.

If i were president the first thing I'd do when i took office is make every american learn to play the riff from the collective soul song with the conspicuous "yeah" in it

David Lynch’s death may have been one of the many indirect deaths that the L.A. fires will ultimately cause. He had COPD (a lung disease) and used oxygen. www.nme.com/news/film/da...

"Her aesthetic is Elphaba, but she's *definitely* a Glinda." - My 11yo absolutely nailing our smoke tabby's characterization.

Lynch's sincerity and his penchant for exploring human darkness ultimately sprung from the same well, which is why his influence is so vast and why it's so difficult to do something """Lynchian.""" But he really loved when a thing was earnest and "corny," as seen below. youtu.be/9DCnIvLmKdA?...

@gavinnewsom.bsky.social on Mike Johnson considering conditioning disaster aid: "Never in California did we question whether or not we, as taxpayers in the largest state in the Union, should support the people of Louisiana at a time of emergency and need. We’d never condition it."

"Sometimes fire f**ks a tornado and makes a mockery of human infrastructure." Jon Stewart on why helping victims of natural disasters shouldn't be political

I don't know how many people are in the intersection of the Venn diagram of mourning Bob Ueker and David Lynch, but that's where I am. Dang it.

The wind gusts are devastating. Truly a hurricane of fire. Video: @stuartpalley.bsky.social

Tonight I found out that Neil Diamond wrote and recorded the first version of "Red Red Wine" and I don't know what to do with myself now?!
