I think a lot of people watched Star Trek and assumed it was the shiny ships that made it a futuristic utopia. The ships came first, then the post scarcity society with a humanitarian armada full of people committed to peace, science, and the advancement of humanity.

Worth following this advice! I would add, keep the eyes on the prize - try to see the larger strategy above these individual actions. Some are frontstage, but some are the real deal. Some are broligarchic, some are christian fundamentalist - look for clashes, for the love of god, they will come!
