With its thriving port, picturesque architecture and the beautiful surrounding countryside, the coastal town of Kirkcudbright in Scotland has attracted artists from the 19thC onwards. Samuel Peploe's paintings of the town (this is from around 1917) emphasise the geometry of its buildings.

This work by Elisabeth Vellacott shows airmen listening to a musical evening at the manor house in Hemingford Grey in Cambridgeshire during WW2; her figurative scenes display an affinity with English folk art and fall within the tradition of Blake, Turner and Palmer and latterly Winifred Nicholson.
