Bessie Smith, St Louis Blues (feat Louis Armstrong on cornet) 1925 (I think that’s right.) What a record. https://pandora.app.link/AJKXK7qmvRb

“The Trump administration cannot avoid its obligations under international law simply by changing its internal policies.”

A serious version of Brooke Rollins’ “maybe I could get a chicken in my backyard” is: “maybe Americans should organize food cooperatives.”

Criterion Channel this month has Jean Renoir’s 1936 Le Crime de Monsieur Lange. See it if you can. It’s a beautiful and important film. And it has lots to do with what’s going on now.

Is this good for business?

I took the 20mm to Brighton Beach today. #photography #brooklyn #sonya7iii

Will the DC District Court of Appeals Put the Boundary Waters Litigation on Hold? Ten days ago, the federal government did an abrupt about-face and joined Twin Metals in a motion to hold the Boundary Waters litigation in abeyance. As I wrote at the time, the motion looked like an attempt by […]

A February Afternoon in the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge I put these up on Mastodon earlier today. I've only had time to make some quick edits since getting back to the city. I think these winter images work well in black and white, or at least that things are moving in the right direction […]

Four black and white views of the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge today. Quick edits, a first pass. #photography #blackandwhite #lightroom #GreatSwampNationalWildlifeRefuge

Listening to this 1957 J.J. Johnson record for the first time. https://pandora.app.link/NKNy0ByjhRb

The farmers suing USDA for removing climate change data are relying not just on the Administrative Procedure Act but also on FOIA.

2018: Apple commits to investing $350 billion in US manufacturing over five years 2021: Apple commits to $430B and 20,000 new jobs over five years Today: Apple commits to $500B and 20,000 jobs over the next four years This doesn’t look like the big Trump win it’s being made out to be.

* Photographed a No Kings demonstration in Union Square * Blogged about Doug Burgum’s corruption * Connected someone with a consulting project that wasn’t right for me * Learned some new stuff in Adobe Lightroom * Tried to figure out how to store a kayak in my Brooklyn place

My god it’s been only five weeks.

Some Views of Oak Flat, the Sacred Site Rio Tinto’s Resolution Copper Project Will Destroy Apache Stronghold v. United States is among the cases on the list for the Supreme Court conference today. (I've written a little about it here, here, and here.) This post by Eugene Volokh suggests the […]

Apache Stronghold is on the list for tomorrow’s Supreme Court conference. https://reason.com/volokh/2025/02/20/one-more-first-amendment-case-to-watch/

Sometimes, when I upload pdfs to my blog, wordpress creates a kind of anchor that forces Chrome (but not other browsers) to scroll to the place where the pdf is. A kind of anchor: there's no trace of an anchor or anything in the code. And it doesn't happen on Firefox or Safari. I've cleared […]

playing in my office right now: Elvin Jones, Live at the Village Vanguard (recorded in 1968). Highly recommended.

Secretary of Interior Doug Burgum Runs Interference for a Foreign Mining Company Yesterday evening, Trump's Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum filed a motion asking the DC Circuit Court of Appeals to hold the Boundary Waters litigation "in abeyance." In light of Trump's "Unleashing American […]

Apparently Google docs does not know that the verb “beg” can take a direct object. Or it’s unable to tell when it can.

Are people using the "Content Credentials" setting in Adobe Lightroom export? And, should I? #photography

Four more from today’s demo in Union Square.

Just before today’s demonstration in Union Square, this man spotted a Tesla Cybertruck.

After seeing Henry IV at TFANA last night, friends and I agreed that the Times review was grudging and wrong. (We also guessed that the critic had probably left after Act 1.) It’s a new play, made of Parts 1 and 2.

The people telling others what fights to pick and not pick (or what language to use or avoid) would have us believe they are above the fray, like savvy referees. But nobody knows what will work and what won’t. They don’t want to dirty their hands and they disapprove of those who do.

404 message when trying to use Pacer this morning. DC Circuit Court of Appeals appears to have gone missing. (please let this be a hiccup and not more mischief.)

Hochul’s office is “experiencing unusually high call volumes,” so here is a simple message New Yorkers can send using the email contact form: Governor Hochul must remove Mayor Adams immediately, unless she wants to be complicit in his corruption.

I hope the New York resignations will set an example and give others the courage to refuse.

Public Lands (and All Public Goods) Will be Collateral Damage in the Assault on the Administrative State About a month ago, I was trying to get my head around the fact that Sarah M. Harris had withdrawn from Twin Metals v. US in order to serve as Trump's Acting Solicitor General. I wasn't sure […]

I've been registered as an Independent since I was in my 20s. Today, I held my nose and changed my registration to Democrat so that I can vote to send Eric Adams packing. He is a corrupt stooge.

The Bondi lawsuit, the revocation of the $80 million, and the dismissal of charges against Adams are obviously all part of the same corrupt scheme.

It’s a little strange to see charges of hypocrisy leveled against people who have broken oaths they swore just a few weeks ago.

Just watched Fernando Ayala’s Los Tallos Amargos (1956) for the first time. The restored film is on the Criterion Collection app this month, part of the Argentine Noir series.

The people concerned about the odds of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting earth in 2032 would do well to remember what Chomsky said: “we are the asteroid.”

Supply Chains Run on Soft Power, and Musk-Trump Are Undermining It These remarks by Seth Magaziner of Rhode Island calling out the Musk-Trump moves to shut down USAID and start a trade war with Canada were a highlight of yesterday's House Natural Resources hearing. I managed only this morning […]

So with the Vought confirmation we’ve now got not just one, not two, but several different authoritarian projects competing and collaborating to destroy the administrative state, i.e. modern American government.

At today’s Natural Resources hearing on domestic mining, Seth Magaziner did a good job of calling out the Musk-Trump move to shut down USAID and start a trade war with Canada. Video is cued to the mark. https://www.youtube.com/live/16MpOshK0uY?&start=4869&end=5153

A detail from an otherwise unremarkable photograph I took from my office window this morning. #photography
