My cartoon for today’s @guardian books.

It's time for my February newsletter! Stuffed with linguisticky links and verbalicious videos. substack.com/home/post/p-...

I was reading something about how chatgpt is good at translation, so I thought I'd give it a simple Welsh test, which it failed spectacularly.

A BBC study just found that generative AI can't even generate news story synopses with any consistent accuracy, and here we are happily pretending it's a symmetrical replacement for education and experience

As I prep my next newsletter, I wonder if those who want them are actually getting them. If you think you might not be, see here: whyisthisinteresting.substack.com/p/the-substa...

Dictionaries: Journal of the Dictionary Society of North America is taking part in the Project Muse Subscribe to Open pilot, and the subscription threshold has been passed! This means that this year's issues will be fully open-access online at no cost to authors.

Hey, that looks just like when I play NYT Spelling Bee.

When conservatives they want the usa to be like it was in the 1950s they mean they want pizza to be considered a weird unpronounceable ethnic food

Oh yes, Homer’s famous “Tes Thdpssssps.” 👍🏻

A key argument for hosting conferences in the US — the relative ease of attendance compared to other countries — is being destroyed in real time. Lots of not-great things start to happen downstream fairly quickly because of that, a whole events industry facing a massive, artificial contraction.

Definitions in the news...

Imagine you still had to write 'what I did on my summer vacation' essays. How badass would it be to get to write about this?

If any other major sector of the UK economy was making mass redundancies on the scale that universities are, would the media and government be so silent?

Sign the petition or write to the Vice-Chancellor, but let's keep up the campaign to make languages central to any new Global Humanities faculty at Cardiff www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card... @emmacayley.bsky.social

I have absolutely no idea what I’m supposed to do with this information

This year marks the 25th anniversary of International Mother Language Day. A new report from UNESCO highlights the need to include multilingualism in education to ensure children can access education in a language they understand. Read more: tinyurl.com/mw9vnwsh #langsky #linguistics

On the queue to see Jazz Emu tonight, I was distracted by the people behind me talking about Jazz Emoo. Mr Emu had the yod-ful pronunciation, though, so phonetic identity crisis averted. In case you don't know @thejazzemu.bsky.social, you might enjoy: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ69...

Have to fast forward on Pete Holmes‘s podcast this week because his guest is Britsplaining American spelling. After the first myth I’m out.

Language is vague and imprecise - especially when we make predictions.

The US State Department is forcing all of its employees to cancel subscriptions to any Trump-unfriendly media.

Student version: 19 Feb is Day of Prevent Plagiarism!

On this day 82 years ago, the United States authorized the forced relocation and incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans. On this Day of Remembrance, we commit to never allowing this dark chapter of our nation’s history to repeat itself.

I’m making my own list of text abbreviations (or initialisms) for more middle-aged, British people, like me. This is what I have so far. Hopefully they’ll catch on. Let me know what you’d add.

Due to the layoffs I am afraid that we have had to take over the running of the US National Parks. We are updating the park regulations but for now the most important thing people can do before visiting a national park is to marinade themselves for 12 hours in olive oil, lime juice & garlic.

My book "Researching Language and Digital Communication" is hereeee. It may just be the most camp discussion of DMC so far. Including analyses of: - Dolly Parton memes - TikTok videos of Jungle and Billie Eilish - anonymous Grindr profiles

🎉 Exciting news! 🎉 LAGB has officially made the move from X to BlueSky! While we’ll always appreciate more than two thousand followers we had before, we’re delighted to have already connected with 173 amazing linguistics enthusiasts here and look forward to growing this community! 🤩

I just saw “cognitive dissidents” used for “cognitive dissonance” and now I have a new way to talk about all my friends

Tech bros cheering on the cuts to grant funding built businesses and wealth on the back of decades of university R&D work. Much of that knowledge was given away to the public. This is basic pulling-up-the-ladder nonsense via rewriting history. They owe the public, not the other way around.

You: They did the math. Me: ᵀʰᵉʸ ᵈⁱᵈ ᵗʰᵉ ᵐᵒⁿˢᵗᵉʳ ᵐᵃᵗʰ You: What was that? Me: Nothing. Me three hours later in a whisper: ᴵᵗ ʷᵃˢ ᵃ ᵍʳᵃᵛᵉʸᵃʳᵈ ᵍʳᵃᵖʰ
