Hello, this is the hand-colored woodcut introducing the section on worms (insects, snails, leeches) in Konrad von Megenberg's Buch der Natur (written in the 1300s, this edition printed in 1478). 🐌 🐜 🐝 🕷️ 🪱

Pretty solid list, judging by what I have seen others go through, too. 💜

Well, two long list/short list submission rejections in the last couple of weeks. Sigh. But the very kind and gracious words in the personal rejection letters do take the sting away. I am thankful, encouraged and still, #amsubmitting. #writingcommunity #poetry

A gentle reminder: Like all professions, all editors are not made equal What one may demand, another may loathe the thought of How one may communicate, another may disapprove of A job title doesn’t bestow inherent correctness to anyone

If you look around right now and name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can physically feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste, you will ground yourself and calm your nervous system. Your awareness will shift from your thoughts to your body and surroundings.

Not much writing today, but I did arrange a family trip to Vancouver and order my vegetable garden seedlings. Not sure which delights me more. No. Wait. It's definitely the seedlings. Now if only the snow would go. #gardening #winter

I once thought up a phrase for the absurdity that throws you out of a work full of absurdities: "Flying Snowman." It was based on the fact my wife could accept a kid's book with a snowman running, walking and eating soup, but when it started flying she was out: whatever.scalzi.com/2011/12/11/t...

Augurians, we had our pitch meeting this week ! ⚾️ That means our issues are set… And responses will come out over the next week or two. Good luck to all our longlisters! ✨ 👀 We had the MOST difficult decisions

Who are some Canadian authors you’d like to boost on this International Women’s Day? #IWD2025

Kobo is Canadian, offers more promotional tools for indie authors, doesn't require exclusivity to publish to its subscription service, Kobo+ In short, it's great and you should buy books there. Like my books, maybe 👀👀

Heck of a deal to read some classic On Spec and see what we’re all about!

The way the world is going these days, we need daily bunnies more than ever.

🍁 A timely throwback from the A-List: The Manual for Draft-Age Immigrants to #Canada, first published in 1968, was a handbook for Americans who refused to serve as draftees in the Vietnam War and were considering immigrating to Canada. 🔗 Learn more: houseofanansi.com/products/man...

Spent more time than I'd care to admit purging and reorganizing my bookshelves. Now what do I read first: something from the gigantic TBR pile (not even counting the e-books on my Kobo) or old favourites I'd forgotten about? #booklovers #tbrpile

We certainly appreciate the number of new followers. Did you know that if each of you were to purchase one issue from our Ko-fi page we’d be able to continue publishing for another year or more? Just look for ko-fi.com/onspecmagazine

I concede that on one level the ‘Gulf of America’ idiocy is just a toddler screaming in his sandbox. On another, I wrote a novel 35 years ago, TIGANA, about how tyrants erase (or try to) names, history, art to consolidate their control of people. So, it matters. Symbols do. So does acquiescence.

Well I am the first in line to vote at my polling station. They got me a chair. GET OUT THERE ONTARIO! Don’t let me down. We do not want 4 more years of Ford because of voter apathy. Don’t let a little snow slow you down.

If you’re in Ontario. Please vote today!! We need you. #NoMoreApathy

Doing taxes. Bleh.

hey for anyone who might want to actually own their kindle books instead of renting them, or who might be thinking of switching to kobo etc and will want to convert them to epubs, you now only have one week before amazon kills your ability to download its ebooks www.theverge.com/news/612898/...

To give more time for submissions (I've received fewer than ten so far), I'm extending the BIPOC-only submission call through the end of February. Got a horror/Weird fiction collection? Send it my way! cursedmorsels.com/submission-c...

Not another typical one. CHILLING PLOT. Reader's attention undiminished. A villain on a rooftop. A secret door. A yellow bile. Devoured by those who DIDN'T LIKE READING. Amazon: a.co/d/4lRdJee New Ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/39608099... New Barnes&Noble: www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-hidden...

Recently I have tried (uncertainly, cautiously) to add a Queer rights component to my first year history course, which of course has meant talking about Stonewall. I also teach that history is the story that we choose to tell about ourselves. We have a strong, if awful, example happening now.

Just saw my neighbour wearing snowshoes through the storm to walk his dog. Dog appeared to be doing just fine without any. #YOW
