Come work with us at Arête Glacier Initiative! 👇 We are seeking a full-time Executive Director (equivalent to CEO) to help lead and grow Arête, a mission-driven non-profit cofounded by Colin Meyer @colinrmeyer.bsky.social and me. drive.google.com/file/d/12svQ...

Accepted in Journal of Glaciology! Work co-led with @subglacial.bsky.social testing glacier slip theory in the lab. We characterize new slip behaviors on short forcing timescales, while also finding theoretical models are reasonable over longer periods. www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Nice ice shove on Lake Monona

Not seeing a lot of discussion about this. Some researchers have estimated the Glen's flow law exponent n as ~ 1 rather than 3-4 for temperate ice. This could mean that the world's most critical glaciers are linear-viscous are their base. 🥼❄️ ⚒️ www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Is there a more impressive drumlinized landscape than this? Between Columbus and Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Green Bay Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Sentinel 2, Jan 9, 2025, and 1 m lidar. Smaller squares in image are 1/2 X 1/2 mile. US Hwy 151 runs almost parallel to ice flow here.

Very privileged and thankful to have been involved in this research, check out our results!

Check out our paper that came out in @science.org today. It uses some really cool experiments to explore the rheology of temperate ice. We find that contrary to colder ice this warm ice has a value of n=1!! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Applications are OPEN for our tuition-FREE, multi-day expeditions blending science, art, and backcountry travel! Open to high school girls* (ages 16-18 on June 1, 2025). Visit inspiringgirls.org for more details. Share to help spread the word - we can't wait to adventure! ♥️ #InspiringGirls

HUGE congratulations to the friendliest guy in glaciology, Dr Richard Alley! @igsoc.bsky.social 🧪⚒️❄️ www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-roo...

LAST DAY for #IAGLR25 abstract submissions. Get yours in now before the abstract proposal portal closes tonight. Just a reminder, the #GreatLakesSci conference is hybrid with flexible presentation options. For more information: bit.ly/3UPFRih

Great Lakes people: IAGLR abstracts for next year's meeting in Milwaukee are due on Monday Dec 16. Consider submitting to our session "36. Geomorphic Drivers and Impacts of Coastal Evolution in the North American Great Lakes" event.fourwaves.com/iaglr2025/pa...

New paper by Francisca Núñez Ferreira that among other findings develops a method to use the sediments in esker deposits to inform on the subglacial effective pressure gradient and how it changed in space/time. We find that eskers largely form at the margin. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Subglacial sediments migrate UP into temperate ice. From Ethan Pierce of @colorado.edu at #AGU24

New paper led by UW-Madison undergraduate student Jillian Prescott about how Glacial Kettles form! Paper combines experiments, remote sensing and some theory development. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

My PhD student Andrew Jones and Dr Ethan Parrish, department alum and collaborator with Whispering River Media did a thing as part of our Glacier Death Project. Funding generously provide by UW-Madison OVRGE and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. www.youtube.com/watch?v=o20e...

Frozen Fringe (debris rich basal ice) has impacts on glacial slip. New paper by @subglacial.bsky.social agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
