#horror, #writingcontest, #authors,

I've made two starter packs with speculative fiction publications - magazines and podcasts - on Bluesky. I hope they make it easier for people to find & follow a whole bunch of great spec-fic venues. I'll keep adding as I go. Starter pack 1: go.bsky.app/4FbEmZU Starter pack 2: go.bsky.app/ASWSvfZ

This from Ted Chiang's latest in the NYer also applies to the classroom. Often when I've argued that it's important for students to do their own writing to think/figure out what they think, I've heard:"they'll do that by prompting." But making big choices isn't the same as making all the choices.

Story Street proudly announces our first annual Hundred Word Horror fiction contest. Winners will be announced on October 31. For prize information & guidelines, visit storystreetwriters.com/word-on-the-... #writing, #contest, #writingcommunity, #horror, #authors

I saw this posted on twitter but I don't think that user is on BlueSky and I wanted to share it here... This interview with Ethan Hawke perfectly describes the importance of art.

This is a post my friend wrote, about getting a life-shattering diagnosis and how it makes you think about your writing and the time you have left.

Happy Pi Day! Also-one of my favorite ironic factoids that undermines all scientific reason-Einstein’s birthday!

Sometimes writers can caught up in showing how characters, particularly children, arrived at possessing a bit of information and get lost in information-delivery cul-de-sacs. Characters can just know things!

Always thought this "Are We Alone?" piece I wrote for The Guardian didn't get enough play. www.theguardian.com/books/2015/j...

Rejection is the default. Writers need to internalise the fuck out of this early on. You don't just need a great manuscript. You need a great ms at the right place in front of the right editor at the right time. This is lightning strike stuff. Don't quit. You're awesome.
