LAPD/Feds are almost certainly using an IMI catcher (stingray). If you have to bring your phone to a protest, make sure it can't reach out to a cell tower - turn it off. If you have to keep it on, put it on airplane mode and put it in a faraday pouch. You can make one at home with Aluminum foil.

Working on an art piece about simulation - video games mapping onto reality 1:1 - and remembered that my first Boston apartment was faithfully rendered as a ruin in Fallout 4. Just did a little digging, apparently its there because Bethesda's lead designer - @dezinuh.bsky.social grew up there.
