Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

Seems a good time to reiterate that trans rights are human rights. 🏳️‍⚧️

In case you, like me, are in need of a doomscrolling break, my lab slack is finding out what kind of veggies we’d be: sophie006liu.github.io/vegetal/

Brc-bio helped me get my foot in the door. It was the first grant to my lab and really helped encourage me to go for it. This is disheartening to say the least.

Gentle reminder that if you truly value diversity in the workforce, top down executive orders may/will change implementation but it shouldn’t change your dedication to building the best possible team/group/cohort/generation of researchers

UC Merceds new MedEd building is going to be surrounded by a mote.

Recruiting NOW!

I think all new assistant professors (and maybe all professors?) need a class in university and funding agency finances. I don't understand how money works at my institution! #AcademicSky

Hey #Microbiome peps - has anyone generated ONT (10.4) data for full length 16s rRNA analysis and has a data analysis/OTU clustering pipeline they are happy with and are willing to share? TIA! #nanopore #MicrobiomeSky

🙋‍♀️ We have an NSF award for a new mass spec ❤️ but the funds can’t be delivered until FY25… which is contingent on congress passing a spending bill. Anyone else gone through this? Did you get help from your institution to start the project? Or did you just have to wait for the funds? #academicsky

Some thoughts on this call to action: I am very optimistic on future applications of industrial and environmental microbiology for environmental remediation and sustainable bioproduction - it's a big interest of mine! - but some caveats to be realistic about: 1/n academic.oup.com/ismej/articl...

NSF makes you say who you got conflicts (coauthored) with. We (really just Jordan Matelsky) just built you a tool for that. Literally one click: bib.experiments.kordinglab.com/nsf-coa

not sure why it took so long (ie after results were in) for me (and others) to abandon twitter - but this article captures the sentiment well. Also - I think - the loss of hope for the return to before times How Elon Musk stands to benefit from Trump's 2024 election www.npr.org/2024/11/07/n...

Endorse this outstanding essay by @hormiga.bsky.social written in 2016, republished here: TLDR: 1. Keep up our research. 2. Teach critical thinking. 3. Advocate publicly for evidence-based decision making. 4. Build diverse and inclusive academic communities open.substack.com/pub/sciencef...

At least it felt good to deactivate my twitter account (finally).

My incredibly brilliant and kind colleague is searching for a funded 1) master's student and 2) postdoc in microbial ecology at Cal Poly Humboldt (Northern California). Catalina is an incredible mentor and her projects are super cool:

POV: you run a research lab, currently breastfeeding, and forgot the milkbags 😳

Anyone going to #LAMG2024 next week and want to find some rock climbs during the afternoon break? Send me a DM!

Just under 2 weeks left to submit an abstract for an oral presentation at the always amazing Lake Arrowhead Microbial Genomics meeting #LAMG2024. Registration will open soon as well. Thanks for your patience as we navigate a new registration portal. See www.lamg.info/abstracts

We have an open position in studying the metabolomics of the marine rhizosphere @ucmerced.bsky.social Come work with me, @phylogenomics.bsky.social Jay Stachowicz, and Gina Chaput on a #NSF funded project: chemical ecology of seagrass-microbe interactions! Apply @ aprecruit.ucmerced.edu/JPF01758

I think this seedling is a little confused…

Reviewing papers is the sort of thing we’re not really taught, but learn by intuition, reviews we receive (good, bad, and ugly), and the philosophy we develop over time. I'm thinking through mine - here are some components. What would you add?

If you can't fit things into your schedule, then you don't have control over your own priorities. How to reclaim your purpose in being a scientist if you can't find time to do what you want to do?🧪

cool cool cool - our roof is getting replaced this week, hopefully in time for the biggest storm to hit CA in the last three years. 🫣 Adulting is hard.
