MAGIC staff are currently deployed at Rothera Research Station, Antarctica. While on site they are undertaking a series of surveys around the local area, including a minimum snow cover survey of the station and monitoring the retreat of the ice ramp that links the station to Adelaide Island.

We're developing a new Map Catalogue where you can access a variety of general interest maps, available with an open licence!   You'll also be able to browse our published maps and BAS staff members can access these and other restricted internal maps 🥳   What Polar maps would you like to see here?

Have you noticed a place without a name during the season? Are you referring to “Glacier A, B or C” in your paper? The Antarctic Place-names Committee are accepting applications for place names - deadline is 17th March. More information about how to apply is here: apc.antarctica.ac.uk

We’ve designed Antarctic map-themed loaders for our polar mapping applications. ❄️🗺️ You can copy these and use them for any of your polar-themed web applications too! See them in action on CodePen: codepen.io/JDawe/pen/yy...

📢 New Map Alert 📢 We have just released a new map of the South Orkney Islands! This double-sided map shows the remote archipelago in the Southern Ocean, incorporating new data on key geographical features such as contours, mountain spot heights and place names. www.bas.ac.uk/media-post/n...

A member of our team was on The One Show last night, discussing our working using UAVs to survey wildlife populations on South Georgia! Did anyone watch it? Catch us at around 20 minutes for a little insight into what remote fieldwork surrounded by thousands of seals and penguins is like 🐧🦭

Someone asked for one of each of our maps earlier today and it made us stop and admire the photographs on the front covers 😍 The polar regions are beautiful (& challenging) places to make maps of! These maps are available from a variety of shops. Further details here: www.bas.ac.uk/data/our-dat...

A new iceberg, ~30x14 km in size, recently calved from the southern end of the George VI Ice Shelf. It's called A84 and is already making quite an impact, bumping into the Stange Ice Shelf over the weekend! These Copernicus Sentinel-1 images from Polar View show the new berg over the last few days.

Did you know that MAGIC support the BAS Air Unit with mapping, imagery and also 3D visualisations? Check out Rothera runway, made using the latest drone imagery draped over a digital elevation model! Visualising the runway & obstacle surfaces in 3D helps pilots better understand these remote areas ✈️

MAGIC staff have just returned from South Georgia, taking spectral profiles of tussock grass to support a Darwin+ project investigating seabird distribution. 📸: Connor Bamford 1/3

To celebrate #PenguinAwarenessDay 🐧 here is a UAV image of emperor penguins at Snow Hill Island taken by our team! We use UAV, aircraft and satellites to monitor penguin numbers around Antarctica, using machine learning, AI and citizen science applications to aid scientists estimate populations.

This stunning Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired 15th Jan, shows our ship tucked into one of the creeks. Just a few more days work here moving scientific equipment and supplies on and off the continent. The large patch of sea ice has now blown in to surround us and significantly change our view.

🌐 Exciting news! We’re thrilled to announce the release of the new Ice Logistics Portal, providing global sea ice charts from 13 ice & weather services. Explore: www.icelogistics.info 1/3

Work onboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough continues as numerous icebergs drift past to our north. Using a combination of optical and radar satellite imagery, plus regular RPAS flights, we keep watch on any icebergs that might get close enough to interrupt us. We are currently onboard the @bas.ac.uk ship RRS Sir David Attenborough, ensuring it has up to date information about sea ice and icebergs to help with safe and efficient navigation. Our SIIS (Sea Ice Information System) delivers sea ice data and satellite imagery directly to the bridge.

We work with a range of satellite imagery in MAGIC, allowing us to look at some beautiful areas of Antarctica! Here's a few recent Sentinel and Landsat images (acquired Nov and Dec 2024, courtesy of Copernicus and USGS). Can anyone name all of the locations or features? 🧊🎄

🗺️❄️New mapping blog alert ❄️🗺️ Discover our blog post to explore the latest topographic datasets released in the @scar-antarctic.bsky.social Antarctic Digital Database. We've also got exciting news on the release of versions 1-5 of the Antarctic coastlines from 1993-2010! www.bas.ac.uk/blogpost/ant...

The A23A iceberg is on the move again. We spotted it was shifting back in 2020 and have been tracking it using a variety of satellite imagery. 🛰️ The animated outlines show how it pirouettes as it moves, pushed by ocean currents. Perhaps this reluctant iceberg is finally on its last journey? 🧊❄️

Hello 👋 We are the Mapping and Geographic Information Centre (MAGIC) at the British Antarctic Survey. We produce maps of the polar regions, survey wildlife colonies and our stations, and provide the latest sea ice information through custom platforms. Here's a quick intro to our work! 1/5
